Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 3 of the 13 other e-signature and proposal tools we grade

Documenso is an open-source alternative to DocuSign for sending documents to be signed, with templates, direct signing links, teams, an API and webhooks. It can be used as a hosted service, with a free plan of 5 documents a month, or run on your own infrastructure, where the Community Edition is free. Business and Enterprise editions add support and commercial license terms for production use.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Documenso, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It's thinner than the big names, though, with no phone app and Zapier as its only listed integration.

Best for open-source signing you can host yourself

Documenso is an open-source take on Docusign: templates, direct signing links, teams and an API, hosted by them or run on your own server. Three people on Teams pay $40 a month billed yearly, with unlimited documents. It's thinner than the big names, though, with no phone app and Zapier as its only listed integration.

ToolGPA report cardDocumensoGraded Oct 17, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyC$40 a month for three on Teams, billed yearly, about $13 a head, for up to 5 users and unlimited documents. That's the middle of this category. The free Community Edition only costs nothing if you run your own server, so it doesn't lift the grade.
Free plan and trialCThe hosted free plan is 5 documents a month with up to 10 recipients each, and no card. Fine for casual signing, not 20 a month. The self-hosted Community Edition has no limits, but it's meant for testing.
FeaturesCTemplates, direct links anyone can sign from, a team space, an API, webhooks and embedded signing. The basics are there, but the listing shows nothing on bulk send, signer ID checks or payments, and unlimited documents come under a fair-use policy.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record. The hosted version is a normal web app with templates to set up. Running it yourself means looking after servers, which is real work.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb only, with an API, webhooks, Zapier and embedded signing for your own site or app. No phone or desktop app.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Documenso is for

  • Great if you want signing software you can read, change and host yourself
  • Handy when you need signing built into your own app or website
  • Good for up to five people sharing one $40 plan

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if nobody on your team can look after a server and you want it free
  • Not for you if you sign on your phone, as there's no app
  • Too light for teams that need bulk send or signer ID checks, which the listing doesn't show

Good to know

Good for

  • Developers and companies that want an open-source signing tool they can host
  • Products that need signing embedded inside their own app
  • Casual signers who need fewer than 5 documents a month

Worth knowing

  • Unlimited documents on paid plans are subject to a fair-use policy.
  • The free Community Edition is aimed at testing and internal trials, with community support only; production support needs a paid license.
  • Self-hosting means running and maintaining the servers yourself; Business Edition license prices are not published.
  • The pricing page shows yearly prices only; paying monthly costs more, as each plan lists a yearly saving.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

You could make the core of Documenso for yourself: documents and templates.

What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. It costs $300 a year. Documenso is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could make

  • Documents and templates: an app builder makes these well.
  • It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.

What you could not

  • It plugs into other products, Zapier among them, and has an API.
  • What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: SOC 2 and HIPAA.

What this rests on. Documenso’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
