Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 48 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade

Donetick is an open-source task and chore manager built for households and other small groups. Tasks can be assigned to the members of a shared group and rotated automatically, repeated on fixed or adaptive schedules, and rewarded with points. It is offered as Donetick Cloud, with a free Basic plan and a paid Plus plan, through iOS and Android apps, or as AGPLv3-licensed software to run on your own server.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Donetick, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, and there's setting up to do: a group, members, rotation rules and points before the chores sort themselves.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for sharing chores fairly around a household

The software is free to run on your own server, but then hosting, backups and updates are on you with no support promised.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $3.33 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $4.99 per month, or $39.99 per year (Donetick Plus, US App Store).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Donetick Cloud has a free Basic plan without ads, and the self-hosted software is free under the AGPLv3. The app lists notifications, real-time updates, API tokens, webhooks and file uploads as Plus features.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Shared groups and assignee rotation

Tasks are shared with a group of family, friends or teammates and assigned to one person, with the next assignee picked at random, by fewest assigned or completed, or kept the same.

  6. 6

    Plain-language task entry

Typing a phrase such as "Take the trash out every Monday and Tuesday at 6:15 pm" creates the task with its dates, times and recurrence filled in.

  7. 7

    Flexible and adaptive recurrence

Tasks repeat daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or on custom days, counted from the due date or the completion date. Adaptive scheduling sets the next date from past completions.

  8. 8

The report card

Best for sharing chores fairly around a household

Donetick is a chore list for households and small groups: it rotates tasks between members, repeats them on fixed or adaptive schedules and hands out points. The software is free to run on your own server, but then hosting, backups and updates are on you with no support promised. On the hosted free plan, reminders and notifications are Plus only, at $4.99 a month, and the README calls offline support very limited.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCRunning it yourself is free, but that means your own server, backups and updates. Hosted Plus is $4.99 a month, or $39.99 a year, which sits mid-pack: above this category's $2.42 cheapest quarter and a whisker under its $5 dear one. No public pricing page, and a web dialog says $39.00 instead.
Free plan and trialBSelf-hosted is free with every feature, but the server is yours to run. The hosted Basic plan has one sub account and no notifications, no real-time updates, no API tokens and no file uploads.
FeaturesBIt covers the job: plain-language entry, rotation by who's done least, adaptive repeats counted from when you really did it, points, admin approval, NFC tags, a full history. The README does call offline support very limited.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and there's setting up to do: a group, members, rotation rules and points before the chores sort themselves. Host it yourself and it's Docker or a binary, with backups and updates on you.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android, with a REST API, webhooks and a Home Assistant add-on, and reminders out through Telegram, Discord or Pushover. No desktop app, which is what keeps it off an A.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Donetick is for

  • Fits if your household or flat shares chores and wants them rotated between people
  • Works for Home Assistant users and people who already host their own software

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're on the free cloud plan, as reminders, notifications, real-time updates, webhooks and file uploads are Plus only
  • Watch out: there's no public pricing page, and the App Store, Google Play and the web dialog each show a different Plus price
  • Skip it if you're often without signal, as the README calls offline support very limited
  • Not for you if you'd self-host to save money but don't want to run the server, backups and updates with no support
  • Not for you if you want a solo to-do list or a desktop app, since it's built around groups and runs on web and phones only

Good to know

Good for

  • Families and roommates sharing a chore list with fair rotation
  • Recurring home maintenance tasks on flexible schedules
  • Home Assistant users who want chores to show up as to-do lists
  • Self-hosters who want an open-source task server

Worth knowing

  • On Donetick Cloud, the app lists notifications and reminders, real-time updates, API tokens, webhooks, file uploads and thing-based triggers as Plus-only.
  • The site has no public pricing page. Plus prices here are from the US App Store; Google Play's US listing shows $5.99 to $39.99 per item.
  • Self-hosting is free, but the terms leave hosting, security, backups and updates to you, with no support guarantee.
  • The project's README describes offline support as very limited.

Open-source task and chore manager for households and groups. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: open source, self-hostable, public API, tasks, natural-language input, calendar, time tracking.

The README does call offline support very limited.
From our grade for features
Shared groups and assignee rotation
Tasks are shared with a group of family, friends or teammates and assigned to one person, with the next assignee picked at random, by fewest assigned or completed, or kept the same.
Plain-language task entry
Typing a phrase such as "Take the trash out every Monday and Tuesday at 6:15 pm" creates the task with its dates, times and recurrence filled in.
Flexible and adaptive recurrence
Tasks repeat daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or on custom days, counted from the due date or the completion date. Adaptive scheduling sets the next date from past completions.
Points, approval and history
Completed tasks earn points for a leaderboard, and an admin can be required to approve them. A history records due dates, completion dates, notes and who did each task.
Things, NFC tags and automation
A Thing stores a number, a true or false value or text, and a change in it can trigger or complete a task. NFC tags mark tasks done when scanned, and a REST API and webhooks connect other tools.
Notifications on several channels
Reminders can be set before, on or after a due date and delivered through the mobile app, Telegram, Discord, Pushover or webhooks. On Donetick Cloud, the upgrade dialog lists task notifications under Plus.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Donetick you could make: tasks, natural-language input, calendar and time tracking. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $39.99 a year. Donetick is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could make

  • Tasks, natural-language input, calendar and time tracking: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Home Assistant, Telegram and Discord among them, and has an API.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Donetick’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
