Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 36 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade

Dropzone is a Mac menu bar app from Aptonic built around drag and drop. Dragging a file brings up a grid of actions at the top of the screen that can move or copy it, open it in an app, send it by AirDrop or upload it to services such as Imgur, Amazon S3 or an SFTP server, and a Drop Bar holds files temporarily. Dropzone 5 is a free download with a paid Pro tier, sold as a lifetime license or, on the Mac App Store, also as a subscription. It is on Setapp too.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Dropzone, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for drag-and-drop file actions on a Mac

Dropzone is a Mac menu bar app that shows a grid of actions when you drag a file, so you can drop it on move, copy, AirDrop or upload.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $1.67 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $4.99 / month or $19.99 / year (Mac App Store), or $35 one-time direct.

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Free download with the action grid, Drop Bar and built-in actions for opening apps and moving or copying files. The vendor lists Amazon S3, SFTP, add-on actions, unlimited grids and more as Pro features.

  4. 4

    It runs on macOS

    macOS.

  5. 5

    Action grid

Dragging a file makes Dropzone appear at the top of the screen; dropping it on an action moves, copies, shares or uploads it. The grid also opens from the menu bar item.

  6. 6

    Drop Bar

A temporary holding place for files: drag items on, then drag them off into another app or onto an action. Pro can detach it into a floating window and name its stacks.

  7. 7

    Multiple grids

Actions can be arranged in several grids and switched between, with adjustable columns and grid size. Adding unlimited grids and categories is listed as a Pro feature.

  8. 8

The report card

Best for drag-and-drop file actions on a Mac

Dropzone is a Mac menu bar app that shows a grid of actions when you drag a file, so you can drop it on move, copy, AirDrop or upload. The free version has the grid and a shelf for parking files; Amazon S3, SFTP, add-on actions and unlimited grids need Pro at $35 once. It's Mac only, on macOS 13 or later, and Pro on the App Store stops working when a subscription ends.

ToolGPA report cardDropzoneGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAPro is $35 once from Aptonic, which is under a year of this category's middle subscription, or $19.99 a year on the Mac App Store. We'd skip the $4.99 monthly option, which comes to $59.88 over twelve months.
Free plan and trialBThe grid, the Drop Bar and the built-in actions for moving, copying, opening and AirDropping files are free for good. Amazon S3, SFTP, add-on actions and unlimited grids are Pro, and Pro comes with a 14-day trial.
FeaturesCDrag and drop is a narrow job and Dropzone covers it: actions to move, copy, AirDrop or upload, a Drop Bar to park files, several grids, your own actions in Ruby or Python and a dz command for the terminal. That one job in full, with S3, SFTP and add-ons kept for Pro.
Ease of useBNo store rating is on record, but there's nothing to set up: drag a file and the grid appears by itself, or press F3. Nothing to wire up unless you want S3 or SFTP.
Platforms and integrationsDMac only, one operating system, and Dropzone 5 needs macOS 13 or later. It connects to Amazon S3, Imgur, AirDrop, Apple Shortcuts and TinyURL, and it's on Setapp. No Windows and no phone app.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Dropzone is for

  • Fits if you move, copy and upload files by drag and drop all day
  • Works for people who need somewhere to park a file while switching apps

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you're not on a Mac, as there's no Windows or phone version and it needs macOS 13 or later
  • Tight if you're staying free, because Amazon S3, SFTP, add-on actions, action shortcuts and unlimited grids are Pro
  • Pricey if you pay monthly on the Mac App Store: $4.99 a month comes to $59.88 a year, against $19.99 billed yearly
  • Watch out: an App Store Pro subscription stops the Pro features when it ends, unless you buy the $34.99 lifetime unlock
  • Watch out: Dropzone 4 owners pay again for Dropzone 5 Pro, at up to 50% off

Good to know

Good for

  • Mac users who move, copy and upload files by drag and drop all day
  • People who want a temporary shelf for files while switching apps
  • Scripters who want to write their own drop actions in Ruby or Python

Worth knowing

  • macOS only; Dropzone 5 requires macOS 13 or later.
  • Amazon S3 and SFTP uploads, add-on actions, action keyboard shortcuts and unlimited grids are Pro features.
  • On the Mac App Store, Pro is a subscription unless you buy the $34.99 lifetime unlock, and Pro features stop when a subscription ends.
  • Dropzone 5 Pro is a paid upgrade for Dropzone 4 owners, at up to 50% off with a Dropzone 4 serial number.

Keep it

Nothing Dropzone does is plain enough to make in a weekend. The 5 things listed below take a company.

It costs $19.99 a year.

What you could not

  • A native app living in the menu bar.
  • A file manager working directly on your disk.
  • Storing and serving files for other people.
  • A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Amazon S3, Imgur and AirDrop among them.

What this rests on. Dropzone’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
