Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 41 of the 51 other email apps we grade

Edison Mail is an email app for iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows that brings an unlimited number of Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, Exchange, AOL and IMAP accounts into one unified inbox. It adds one-tap unsubscribe, sender blocking, tracking-pixel blocking and an assistant that gathers travel, bills, packages and subscriptions. The app is free and is funded by Edison's e-commerce research business, which uses anonymized data from commercial emails. A paid Edison Mail+ subscription adds phishing protection.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Edison Mail, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It's free because Edison's research business collects anonymized data from your commercial emails, like receipts, though you can opt out.

It's free because Edison's research business collects anonymized data from your commercial emails, like receipts, though you can opt out. SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBThe app itself costs nothing, under what most of this category charges. What stops it going higher: the only paid plan is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year for three security extras, and the free app is funded by anonymized data from your commercial mail.
Free plan and trialAFree with unlimited accounts, a unified inbox, one-tap unsubscribe, Block Sender, snooze, Focused Inbox and tracking-pixel blocking. There's no cap a normal person would hit. Phishing warnings are the part held back for Mail+.
FeaturesCThe basics of a mail app: Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, Exchange, AOL and IMAP in one inbox, one-tap unsubscribe, domain blocking, snooze and Undo Send. The gaps are on its own pages: the Assistant's bills, travel and package folders only work in five countries.
Ease of useB4.5 from about 78,700 App Store ratings, a large crowd but short of the 4.7 an A needs. Tracking pixels are blocked by default and unsubscribing is a single tap.
Platforms and integrationsBiPhone, iPad, Android and Windows, so phone and computer are both covered, and it reads Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, Exchange, AOL and any IMAP account. There's no web version, and the Mac app Edison's site mentions had no live store listing when we checked.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Edison Mail is for

  • Fits if you've got several email accounts and want one free inbox for all of them
  • Works for people whose inbox is full of newsletters they want out of with one tap

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you'd rather not have data from your receipts used for research, even anonymized
  • Not for you if you work on a Mac or in a browser: it's iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows, and the Mac app has no live listing
  • Pricey if you only want the phishing warnings, at $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year
  • Watch out: the Assistant's bills, travel and package folders only work in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and India

Good to know

Good for

  • People with several email accounts who want a free unified inbox
  • Clearing out newsletters with one-tap unsubscribe
  • Households that want phishing warnings shared across family members

Worth knowing

  • The free app is funded by Edison's research business, which collects anonymized data from commercial emails such as receipts. You can opt out or delete stored data.
  • Verify Sender phishing warnings, Validate Contacts and LinkedIn Discovery need Edison Mail+ at $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
  • Edison's site still mentions a Mac app, but the Mac App Store link from its launch post returned no listing when checked, so Mac is not listed here.
  • Assistant features for bills and receipts, entertainment, travel and package alerts are limited to the US, UK, Canada, Australia and India.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Edison Mail you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 41 of the 51 other email apps we grade. It costs $99.99 a year.

What you could not

  • An email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail.
  • Filters that read every message as it arrives.
  • Apps for Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo Mail among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.

What this rests on. Edison Mail’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
