Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 19 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade
Everlog is a journaling app for iPhone, iPad and Mac built around a Markdown editor and a timeline of entries. Entries are organized into journals and tags, can be bookmarked and searched, and can carry comments that thread later reflections under an earlier entry. The free version covers one journal with image attachments. Everlog Premium adds iCloud sync between devices, unlimited journals, scheduled backups and video, audio and PDF attachments, and is sold monthly, annually or as a lifetime purchase.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Everlog, taken from its own pages and our grades.
But the free version won't sync between your devices, there's nothing for Android or Windows, and if Premium lapses, sync turns off.

The report card
Best for a Markdown journal on Apple devices
Everlog is a Markdown journal for iPhone, iPad and Mac that lets you add a comment under an old entry. Premium is $1.99 a month, $19.99 a year or $49.99 once. But the free version won't sync between your devices, there's nothing for Android or Windows, and if Premium lapses, sync turns off.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Premium is $1.99 a month, and the annual plan is $19.99, which works out at $1.67 a month where the cheapest quarter of journaling apps here starts at $2.99. Lifetime is $49.99 once, less than a year of the category's middle, and every plan works with Family Sharing. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free for good with one journal, photos, tags, bookmarks, search and a passcode lock. Then the caps: it won't sync between your iPhone and your Mac, a second journal means paying, and so do automatic backups. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole job, with a Markdown editor, a timeline and calendar, journals, tags, search, a Face ID lock and comments threaded under an old entry. Video, audio and PDF attachments need Premium, and the written Recaps need iOS 27. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.6 from about 300 App Store ratings, too few to reach the top band. It's an editor and a timeline, and you can hide the word count, location and weather if they get in the way. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | One family of devices: iPhone, iPad and Mac, synced through your own iCloud. No Android, no Windows, no web version, and iCloud is the only thing it connects to. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Everlog is for
- Fits if you write in Markdown and use an iPhone, iPad and Mac
- Works for going back to old entries and adding a note underneath
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you use Android or Windows, as it's Apple devices only
- Tight if you're staying free and want your journal on two devices, because sync is Premium
- Not for you if you might let Premium lapse, since sync turns off and new entries only go in the default journal
- Tight if you're staying free, as you get one journal and images only, with no video, audio or PDFs
- Watch out: iCloud data is end-to-end encrypted only with Apple's Advanced Data Protection on, and Recaps need iOS 27
Good to know
Good for
- Apple users who want a plain Markdown journal on iPhone, iPad and Mac
- People who revisit old entries and add notes beneath them
- Buyers who prefer a one-time purchase to a subscription
Worth knowing
- Apple platforms only: there is no Android, Windows or web version.
- Syncing between devices needs Premium, and the free version is limited to one journal and image attachments.
- If Premium lapses, sync turns off and new entries can only be written in the default journal.
- iCloud data is end-to-end encrypted only when Apple's Advanced Data Protection is switched on.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Everlog you could make: daily notes, Markdown and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $23.88 a year.
What you could make
- Daily notes, Markdown and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Everlog’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
