Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 44 of the 74 other calendar and scheduling apps we grade

FamilyWall is a family organizer from Family & Co, a company based in Paris. A family or other private group, called a circle, shares a color-coded calendar, shopping and to-do lists, a messenger, a contact book and a photo gallery on phones, tablets and the web. The paid Premium plan adds Google and Outlook calendar sync, a meal planner, a budget tracker, timetables, shared documents and location sharing with place alerts.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about FamilyWall, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Any family member can add or edit an appointment, and the calendar flips between one person's week and everyone's.

The report card

Best for one private app for the whole family's admin

FamilyWall is a family organizer more than a calendar: one private circle shares a color-coded calendar, shopping lists, to-dos, a messenger and a photo gallery, on phones and the web. Syncing with Google or Outlook, the meal planner, location sharing and going ad free all need Premium, $4.99 a month on the website but $7.99 on the US App Store. Its own pages disagree on whether the free plan has ads.

Value for moneyCPremium is $4.99 a month, or $44.99 for the year. That's the ordinary rate here: a quarter of the calendars in this directory start under $4.00 a month and a quarter above $10.00. Watch where you buy it, mind: the US App Store lists the monthly price at $7.99 against $4.99 on the website.
Free plan and trialCStandard gives you the shared calendar, shopping and to-do lists, messenger and contact book. The cap you'll hit first is sync: Google and Outlook calendars are Premium, and so is going ad free. Premium has a 30-day trial.
FeaturesBThe family's whole admin pile: color-coded calendar, shopping lists you can browse offline in the shop, to-dos you can assign, a messenger, a private photo gallery. Premium adds a meal planner that writes the grocery list, a budget tracker and a map with arrival alerts.
Ease of useA4.8 from about 24,000 App Store ratings. Any family member can add or edit an appointment, and the calendar flips between one person's week and everyone's.
Platforms and integrationsBiPhone, Android and the web, on phones and tablets, with Google and Outlook sync and any public calendar by URL. There's no desktop app and no API, and the sync is Premium only.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who FamilyWall is for

  • Fits if you want the family calendar, shopping list and chat in one private app
  • Works for households that plan meals and track a shared budget, on Premium

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free and live in Google Calendar, because sync is Premium only
  • Pricey if you pay monthly through the US App Store, at $7.99 against $4.99 on the website
  • Skip it if all you want is a calendar, since much of this is lists, messages and photos
  • Watch out: the meal planner, budget tracker, documents and location sharing are all Premium
  • Watch out: Premium covers only the first 5 circles an account made, and its pages contradict each other on ads

Good to know

Good for

  • Families who want a calendar, lists, messaging and photos in one private app
  • Parents who want arrival alerts and a map of where children are (Premium)
  • Households that plan meals and track a shared budget (Premium)
  • Keeping separate circles for extended family, friends or neighbors

Worth knowing

  • The US App Store listing gives the monthly Premium price as $7.99, above the $4.99 on FamilyWall's website and Google Play listing. The yearly price is $44.99 on all three.
  • Google and Outlook sync, the meal planner, budget tracker, timetables, documents and location sharing all need Premium.
  • Premium applies to the first 5 circles an account created; any further circles stay on the free plan and cannot be chosen manually.
  • The Premium page lists ad-free use as a Premium benefit, although the About page describes FamilyWall as ad-free.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of FamilyWall you could make: calendar and tasks. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $44.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Calendar and tasks: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Storing and serving files for other people.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. FamilyWall’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
