Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 15 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade

The Five Minute Journal app is the digital version of Intelligent Change's paper gratitude journal, for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android. It walks you through a short set of prompts each morning and evening, then shows past entries on a timeline and calendar. Recent versions add voice memos and an AI coach called Eva. The basic version is free; a Premium subscription adds photos and video, custom questions, a notes section and a mood tracker.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Five Minute Journal, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It asks, you answer, and you're done in a few minutes.

The report card

Best for a quick gratitude habit on your phone

The Five Minute Journal app asks a few short questions each morning and night, the format of Intelligent Change's paper book, and that routine is free. It only runs on phones and tablets, free writing, photos and your own questions need Premium, the maker publishes no prices while the App Store lists several, and entries sit on its servers with no end-to-end encryption mentioned. If you want to write at length or at a computer, look elsewhere.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCOrdinary money, as far as anyone will say. Intelligent Change publishes no prices; the US App Store lists Premium at $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year, which is $3.33 a month against a middle of $4.17 here, next to lower $4.99 and $19.99 to $24.99 items, some of which are marked for existing users.
Free plan and trialBThe full morning and evening routine, timeline, calendar, reminders, streaks, the lock and export, with no entry cap. The caps are what most people would want next: free writing sits in a Premium notes section, and so do photos, custom questions and the mood tracker.
FeaturesCOne job: a short guided entry morning and night, with quotes, weekly challenges, streaks and export to PDF, HTML or Dropbox. That's a much smaller job than journaling: there's no free writing without Premium, and no photo on a day either.
Ease of useA4.8 from about 17,600 App Store ratings. It asks, you answer, and you're done in a few minutes. Reviewers who dropped other journaling apps say they kept this one up.
Platforms and integrationsCiPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android, and that's it. No web or desktop version, so no typing at a proper keyboard. It talks to Apple Health and Dropbox. Four languages: English, French, German and Spanish.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Five Minute Journal is for

  • Fits if blank-page diaries never stick and you'd rather just answer a few questions
  • Works for people who already fill in the paper Five Minute Journal and want it on a phone

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want to write long entries, because free writing is a Premium notes section
  • Not for you if you journal at a computer, since there's no web or desktop version
  • Pricey if you only want a photo a day, which needs Premium at up to $39.99 a year
  • Not for you if you want your diary kept only on your own device, as entries go to their servers
  • Watch out: the site shows no prices, the App Store lists several, the trial is 3 days, and AI chats go to Claude once you agree

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want a short guided gratitude routine each morning and evening
  • Users of the paper Five Minute Journal who want the same format on a phone
  • Beginners who prefer answering set prompts to free writing

Worth knowing

  • Listed for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android in English, French, German and Spanish; no web or desktop version is offered.
  • Photos and video, custom questions, the notes section, the mood tracker and the widget need Premium.
  • The vendor's site shows no prices; the US App Store lists several monthly and annual price points, some marked for existing users.
  • The privacy policy says journal entries are stored on the vendor's servers, and that AI features send your messages to Anthropic's Claude once you consent in the app.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Five Minute Journal you could make: daily notes and mood tracking. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $59.88 a year.

What you could make

  • Daily notes and mood tracking: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • People on the other end: coaches. No app builder makes those.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app and widgets.

What this rests on. Five Minute Journal’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
