Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 64 of the 79 other project management tools we grade

Fizzy is a kanban tool from 37signals, the company behind Basecamp and HEY, for tracking bugs, issues, ideas and small projects as cards on boards. Cards left untouched are closed automatically after a set number of days, and an urgent card can be marked as a Golden Ticket that moves to the top of its column. The hosted service is free, and the source code is published for running on your own server.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Fizzy, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No App Store rating on record, and the boards are still yours to build.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for free, simple kanban for bugs and ideas

Fizzy is kanban from 37signals, the people behind Basecamp and HEY, for bugs, issues, ideas and small projects, free with no paid plan on the site.

  2. 2

    It is free

Fizzy has no paid plan at all. The hosted service is entirely free and is paid for by Basecamp and HEY, 37signals' two paid products. File storage is limited to 1 GB. The code can also be run on your own server at no charge.

  3. 3

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, iOS and Android.

  4. 4

    Boards and columns

Every board starts with three columns, NOT NOW, MAYBE? and DONE. Custom columns, each with its own name and color, are added alongside them.

  5. 5

    Cards with steps and comments

A card holds a description, a checklist of steps, comments, tags and an assignee. Typing # in a card links to another card by its number.

  6. 6

    Auto close

Cards with no activity move to NOT NOW after a set period, 30 days by default. Administrators can change the period for the account or for one board.

  7. 7

    A 3.0 GPA, above 64 of 79

That is against the other project management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card

Best for free, simple kanban for bugs and ideas

Fizzy is kanban from 37signals, the people behind Basecamp and HEY, for bugs, issues, ideas and small projects, free with no paid plan on the site. It's kept simple on purpose: no reordering cards within a column, no renaming the default columns, no templates and no import from Trello or Jira. Storage stops at 1 GB and there's no desktop app.

ToolGPA report cardFizzyGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyANothing to pay, where project tools here start at $5.10 a user a month in the cheapest quarter. The hosted service is free and 37signals pays for it out of Basecamp and HEY, and the site lists no paid plan at all.
Free plan and trialAFree outright: the whole product, hosted for you, with no plan above it holding anything back and no per-user fee. File storage stops at 1 GB, and you can run the code on your own server instead at no charge.
FeaturesCBoards, columns, and cards with steps, comments, tags and an assignee, plus two extras: untouched cards slide to NOT NOW after 30 days, and a Golden Ticket jumps to the top. Its own help pages list the gaps, and there are plenty. No import from Trello or Jira, no templates, no reordering cards.
Ease of useCNo App Store rating on record, and the boards are still yours to build. There's little enough to learn, mind: every board opens with NOT NOW, MAYBE? and DONE, and you add your own columns beside them.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android, with no desktop app at all, so on a computer it's the browser or an installed web app. Webhooks push card events to Slack, Campfire or anything that takes them, and an API covers boards, cards and comments.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Fizzy is for

  • Fits if you're a small team tracking bugs, issues and ideas on simple boards
  • Works for developers who want to run or change the code on their own server

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you're moving from Trello, Jira, GitHub Issues or Basecamp, as there's no import
  • Too light for teams that want board or card templates, cards kept in an order they choose, or renamed default columns
  • Tight if you attach lots of files, since storage stops at 1 GB
  • Watch out: the iOS app is iPhone only, and on a computer it's the browser or an installed web app
  • Watch out: the O'Saasy license allows self-hosting but bars offering it to others as a competing hosted service

Good to know

Good for

  • Small teams tracking bugs, issues and ideas on simple boards
  • Teams that want a hosted kanban tool with no per-user fee
  • Developers who want to run or modify the code on their own server

Worth knowing

  • The hosted service limits file storage to 1 GB. The iOS app is for iPhone only, and desktops use the browser or an installed web app.
  • There is no import from Trello, Jira, GitHub Issues or Basecamp and no two-way integration; data leaves through webhooks and the API.
  • Cards cannot be reordered within a column, the three default columns cannot be renamed, and there are no board or card templates.
  • The O'Saasy license permits self-hosting and modification but bars offering the software to others as a competing hosted service.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Fizzy is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces. It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 64 of the 79 other project management tools we grade.

What you could make

  • Kanban boards and issue tracking: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Slack, Campfire and Basecamp among them, and has an API.

What this rests on. Fizzy’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
