Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 8 of the 33 other team communication apps we grade
Flock is a team messaging app with public and private channels, direct messages, voice notes, and built-in video and voice calls with screen sharing. Shared to-dos, notes, polls and reminders are part of the app, and an app store connects outside tools such as Google Drive, Trello and Jira. The free Starter plan is aimed at teams of up to 20 members.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Flock, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1

- 4
It runs on 6 platforms

- 6

1-1 video calls are on the free plan. Pro and Enterprise add group video calls with up to 20 participants and screen sharing. Voice notes can be sent in any channel.
- 7

To replace Flock you would be making chat that a whole team counts on staying up. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for team chat with to-dos and polls built in
Flock is a team messenger with channels, video calls, shared to-dos, notes, polls and reminders, on every platform including Linux. Pro is $4.50 a person a month billed annually. But the free plan searches only 10,000 messages with 10 public channels, group video calls stop at 20 people, guests are billed after 90 days, and SSO is Enterprise only.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $4.50 a user a month billed annually, $6 monthly, which lands between the cheapest and dearest quarters of team chat, under the $7 middle. Ordinary money for what you get, and single sign-on and Active Directory sync sit on Enterprise, priced by quote. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Starter runs to 20 members but the caps arrive quickly: 10,000 searchable messages, 10 public channels, 5 GB of storage for the whole team, 1-1 video only and a single admin. There's a 30-day trial of Pro, card-free, if you want to see the rest. |
| Features | C | Public and private channels, DMs, voice notes, shared to-dos with due dates, notes, polls, reminders, an app store and webhooks. Two gaps the listing names itself, though: group video calls cap at 20 participants, and SSO and Active Directory sync are Enterprise-only. |
| Ease of use | C | No App Store rating on record. And there's a workspace to build before anyone talks: channels to open, sign-up domains to approve, admins to name and the app store apps to connect one by one. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android, the full set. The app store connects Google Drive, Google Calendar, Asana, Trello, Jira, GitHub, Zoom and Zapier, and there are webhooks and developer docs for building your own. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Flock is for
- Fits if you want chat, calls and to-dos in one app rather than three
- Works for teams that run quick polls, shared notes and reminders in the chat itself
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're staying free, with 10,000 searchable messages, 10 public channels, 5 GB in total and one admin
- Skip it if your all-hands is bigger than 20, because that's the cap on group video calls
- Pricey if you bring in lots of guests, who are billed like members after 90 days
- Watch out: single sign-on and Active Directory sync are Enterprise only, priced by quote
Good to know
Good for
- Small and mid-sized teams that want chat, calls and to-dos in one app
- Teams that want polls, notes and reminders built into their chat
- Nonprofits, which can ask for special pricing
Worth knowing
- Starter is meant for teams of 1 to 20 members, searches only 10,000 messages and has 10 public channels.
- Group video calls are capped at 20 participants and, like screen sharing, need Pro or Enterprise.
- Guests are free for 90 days from the invitation, then billed at the same rate as team members.
- Single sign-on and Active Directory sync are listed under Enterprise, which is priced by quote.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Flock you would be making chat that a whole team counts on staying up. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 14 of the 33 other team communication apps grade higher. It costs $54 a year.
What you could make
- Tasks: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Chat that a whole team counts on staying up.
- Video calls.
- Storing and serving files for other people.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Google Drive, Google Calendar and Asana among them, and has an API.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: single sign-on.
What this rests on. Flock’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
