Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.0

GPA, above 1 of the 65 other focus apps we grade

Focus is a Pomodoro-style timer with built-in task and project lists for Apple devices, made by Meaningful Things, a two-person studio in Tübingen, Germany. You pick a task, run a timed session, take a break and review the day's activity in charts and a session timeline. It is free to download, a Focus Pro subscription unlocks the rest, and data syncs through the user's own iCloud.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Focus - Deep Work Timer, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Worth knowing the Mac app is a separate App Store listing from the iPhone and iPad one.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for a timer and task list across Apple devices

Focus is a Pomodoro timer with a task list built in, for iPhone, iPad, Mac and other Apple devices, and it logs each session against a task.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $3.33 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $6.99 / month, or $39.99 / year (US App Store).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Free to download and use. The vendor says Focus Pro unlocks the full experience but does not list which features are held back for it.

  4. 4

    It runs on 2 platforms

    iOS and macOS.

  5. 5

    Timed focus sessions

Sessions and breaks follow the Pomodoro rhythm, with lengths you set yourself. When a session ends, the app shows a full-screen alarm on iOS 26 and a notification elsewhere.

  6. 6

    Tasks and projects

Tasks are collected in the app and grouped into projects. You pick one before starting a session, so each session is logged against the task it was spent on.

  7. 7

    Statistics and session timeline

Pie and bar charts break focused time down by task, with calendar views and day, week, month and year ranges. Sessions in the timeline can be added, edited or deleted afterwards.

  8. 8

    A 2.0 GPA, above 1 of 65

That is against the other focus apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card

Best for a timer and task list across Apple devices

Focus is a Pomodoro timer with a task list built in, for iPhone, iPad, Mac and other Apple devices, and it logs each session against a task. It's free to start. But the vendor doesn't say what Focus Pro unlocks, the App Store lists yearly items from $19.99 to $49.99, and there's nothing for Windows, Android or the web.

ToolGPA report cardFocus - Deep Work TimerGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyC$6.99 a month or $39.99 a year, which lands mid-table for focus apps, between the $2.99 low end and the $8.33 high end. Harder to judge than it should be: the vendor won't say what Pro unlocks, and the store lists yearly items from $19.99 to $49.99.
Free plan and trialCFree to download and use, but the vendor's pages never say where free stops, only that Pro unlocks the full experience. There's a 7-day Pro trial. A free tier with limits nobody lists is a wall you'll hit without warning.
FeaturesCTimed sessions at your own lengths, tasks grouped into projects, every session logged against its task, charts by day, week, month and year, and a timeline you can edit afterwards. No blocker for apps or sites, though, and the vendor won't publish what Pro holds back.
Ease of useC4.4 from about 1,800 App Store ratings, the band most apps sit in. Worth knowing the Mac app is a separate App Store listing from the iPhone and iPad one.
Platforms and integrationsCiPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro, synced through your own iCloud, with Siri and Shortcuts. One family of devices, though: no Windows, Android or web version is listed.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Focus - Deep Work Timer is for

  • Fits if you're on Apple devices and want a timer and a task list in one app
  • Works for people who want focused time charted by task, day and week

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you use Windows or Android, as it's Apple platforms only, with no web version either
  • Not for you if you want to know what Pro adds before you subscribe, since the vendor doesn't list it
  • Watch out: yearly items run from $19.99 to $49.99, and a $59.99 Patron plan isn't explained anywhere
  • Too light for blocking, since there's no app or site blocker in it
  • Not for you if your devices are on older software, because it needs iOS 18.0 or macOS 14.0

Good to know

Good for

  • Apple users who want a timer and a task list in one app
  • People who like to review focused time by task in charts
  • Mac users who want the timer in the menu bar
  • Those who prefer data kept in their own iCloud with no ads

Worth knowing

  • Apple platforms only: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro. No Windows, Android or web version is listed.
  • The vendor does not publish which features need Focus Pro, and its FAQ sends buyers to the App Store for prices.
  • The App Store shows yearly items from $19.99 to $49.99, so the price offered in the app may differ from the $39.99 listed first.
  • Focus for Mac is a separate App Store listing from the iPhone and iPad app. It needs macOS 14.0 or later, and the iPhone app iOS 18.0.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Focus - Deep Work Timer you could make: Pomodoro timer, tasks and time tracking. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 61 of the 65 other focus apps grade higher. It costs $39.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Pomodoro timer, tasks and time tracking: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A native app living in the menu bar.
  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app, widgets, Siri and Live Activities.

What this rests on. Focus - Deep Work Timer’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
