Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 30 of the 65 other focus apps we grade
Focus Friend is a focus timer for iPhone, iPad and Android created by Hank Green and Honey B Games. A bean character works alongside you while a session runs, and finishing the session earns rewards that buy decorations for the bean's house. A Deep Focus Mode can lock distracting apps during a session, and break timers follow the Pomodoro method.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Focus Friend, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It's free with no ads and can lock apps while the timer runs.
- 1

- 5
Bean focus timer
A bean character focuses while your timer runs, and stopping the timer early interrupts it. A finished session pays out rewards to spend on decorations.
- 6

The report card
Best for a focus timer with a character to keep you at it
Focus Friend is a phone focus timer with a bean that works while you do, and finishing a session earns socks to decorate its house. It's free with no ads and can lock apps while the timer runs. But it's iPhone, iPad and Android only, nobody says what Pro adds beyond scarves, skins cost extra, and the FAQ says Deep Focus didn't yet block Safari on iOS.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $3.99 a month, $19.99 a year or $39.99 once, at or under this category's middle. The trouble is nobody says what you're buying: the only thing the FAQ names is scarves, a second reward from each session. Bean skins are $2.99 to $5.99 on top. |
| Free plan and trial | B | A free download with no ads, and the timer, breaks, stats and Deep Focus Mode come with it. The only Pro perk the vendor names is scarves, so this is a plan you could stay on. No trial of Pro is listed. |
| Features | C | A countdown and a stopwatch, Pomodoro breaks, tags, a stats page and a Deep Focus Mode that locks apps with an allow list. The basics, then, with a hole in the main one: the FAQ says Deep Focus didn't block Safari on iOS and can clash with other Screen Time blockers. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.8 from about 8,300 App Store ratings. Press start and the bean does the rest. On iPhone a Live Activity keeps your progress on the lock screen. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | iPhone, iPad and Android, and nothing else. No Mac, Windows or web version and no integrations, so phones and tablets are the whole of it. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Focus Friend is for
- Fits if you stick to a timer more easily when a character and rewards come with it
- Works for students who study in timed sessions on a phone or iPad
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a timer on your computer, as there's no Mac, Windows or web version
- Not for you if you want to know what Pro adds before paying: only scarves are named, and a $29.99 offer isn't explained
- Too light for strict blocking on an iPhone, since the FAQ said Deep Focus didn't yet block Safari
- Watch out: the FAQ says Deep Focus can clash with other Screen Time blockers
- Pricey if you want the bean skins, at $2.99 to $5.99 each on top of Pro
Good to know
Good for
- People who keep to a timer more easily when it comes with a character and rewards
- Students working in timed sessions with breaks
- Phone users who want distracting apps locked while a timer runs
Worth knowing
- It runs on iPhone, iPad and Android only; the vendor lists no Mac, Windows or web version.
- The vendor does not publish what Focus Friend Pro includes beyond scarves earned from each session.
- Some bean skins are separate purchases, listed at $2.99 to $5.99 on the US App Store.
- The FAQ, last updated August 26, 2025, says Deep Focus Mode did not yet block Safari on iOS and can conflict with other Screen Time blockers.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A focus timer at its plainest counts down 25 minutes and keeps a log.
You could make the core of Focus Friend for yourself: Pomodoro timer. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $19.99 a year it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.
What you could make
- Pomodoro timer: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Blocking that reaches every browser and app and is hard to switch off.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Hooks into the device itself: widgets and Live Activities.
What this rests on. Focus Friend’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
