2.6

GPA, above 30 of the 65 other focus apps we grade

Focus Keeper is a Pomodoro timer from PIXO Inc. for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android and the web. It runs focus sessions and breaks at lengths you choose, logs each session automatically and charts your focus time so you can see patterns in how you work. Sessions and tasks are saved to an account, and a paid Pro upgrade is sold through the app stores.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Focus Keeper, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It's a timer: you press start, and it'll begin the next round for you.

The report card

Best for a plain Pomodoro timer with progress charts

Focus Keeper is a plain Pomodoro timer, 25 minutes on and 5 off, with charts of where your focus time went, on iPhone, Android, Apple Watch and the web. It blocks nothing. There's no Mac or Windows app and no price list, the App Store shows Pro at seven amounts up to $199.99, and nobody says what Pro adds.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCThere's no price list anywhere. The US App Store shows Pro at seven amounts, from $3.99 a month and $34.99 a year up to $199.99, with nothing saying how they differ or what Pro adds. The cheapest are about typical here. Check the figure before you tap.
Free plan and trialCFree downloads on both phones and a free sign-up on the web, so starting costs nothing. But PIXO never publishes what Pro unlocks, so the cap is in there somewhere and you'll find it by hitting it.
FeaturesCThe 25 and 5 cycle with lengths you set, sessions logged on their own, charts of your focus time and tasks beside the timer. That covers timing and tracking. Nothing blocks apps or websites, which is half of what this category is for.
Ease of useA4.8 from about 32,000 App Store ratings. It's a timer: you press start, and it'll begin the next round for you.
Platforms and integrationsBBoth phones, Apple Watch and a timer in the browser, with one history across the lot. No Mac or Windows app, and nothing listed that it connects to.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

  • Not for you if you want the price before you start, as Pro shows at seven amounts, from $3.99 to $199.99
  • Not for you if you want to know what Pro unlocks, since the vendor doesn't say
  • Skip it if you want a real Mac or Windows app, because on a computer it runs in the browser
  • Watch out: two Pro purchases, at $99.99 and $199.99, don't say whether they're one-time or recurring

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A focus timer at its plainest counts down 25 minutes and keeps a log.

You could make the core of Focus Keeper for yourself: Pomodoro timer, time tracking and tasks. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. It costs $34.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Pomodoro timer, time tracking and tasks: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app.

What this rests on. Focus Keeper’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
