Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 44 of the 74 other calendar and scheduling apps we grade
Fossify Calendar is a free, open-source calendar app for Android from the Fossify project, which publishes a set of everyday Android apps without ads or tracking. It keeps events, reminders and recurring schedules on the device, shows them in day, week, month, year and event-list views, and adds home screen widgets. The app does not request Android's Internet permission; calendars sync only through accounts or calendar providers already configured on the phone.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Fossify Calendar, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It's Android only, and help comes through a public issue tracker.
- 1
Best for a private Android calendar with no ads
That's also the limit: it has no sync or cloud of its own, no tasks and no typed natural-language entry.
- 2
It is free
Fossify Calendar has no paid plan at all. Free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license, with no ads, tracking or account. The project takes donations through GitHub Sponsors, Patreon, PayPal, Liberapay and Open Collective.
- 3
It runs on Android

- 4

- 5
Recurring events and reminders
Events take times, durations, reminders and advanced repetition rules. Reminder sounds, looping audio and vibration can be customized.
- 6
Sync through device accounts
Calendar data can sync through accounts or calendar providers set up on the device, such as Google Calendar, Outlook, Nextcloud or Exchange. Fossify runs no sync service of its own.

The report card
Best for a private Android calendar with no ads
Fossify Calendar is a free, open-source Android calendar with no ads, no tracking and no account, and it doesn't ask for internet access, so events stay on the phone unless an account you've set up syncs them. That's also the limit: it has no sync or cloud of its own, no tasks and no typed natural-language entry. It's Android only, and help comes through a public issue tracker.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Nothing to pay, ever. The complete app is free on Google Play and F-Droid with no in-app purchases, where the middle of this category asks $6 a month. The project lives on optional donations. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Free and open source under GPL-3.0, with no ads, no tracking, no account and no paid tier holding anything back. There's no limit here for a normal person to run into. |
| Features | C | The basics and no more: day, week, month, year and event-list views, repeat rules, reminders with custom sounds, file import and export, birthdays from your contacts. The gaps are owned up to on its own pages. No sync service of its own, no tasks, no plain-language entry. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record, as it isn't on iPhone, but there's nothing to set up: install it and it works, with no sign-up at all. Syncing does assume the Google, Outlook, Nextcloud or Exchange account is already on the phone. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | One operating system. The Fossify project lists Android as its only platform, and the app reads whatever accounts are already on the phone rather than syncing itself. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Fossify Calendar is for
- Fits if you're on Android and want a calendar with no ads, no tracking and no sign-up
- Works for a private calendar that stays on the phone, installed from Google Play or F-Droid
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you also use an iPhone or a computer, because it's Android only
- Not for you if you want a cloud account that follows you between devices, as it has none of its own
- Too light for people who want tasks, booking links or typed natural-language entry
- Watch out: help is a public issue tracker and community channels, and the project runs on donations
- Watch out: Google Play and F-Droid release on their own schedules, so versions can differ between stores
Good to know
Good for
- Android users who want a calendar without ads, tracking or sign-up
- People who prefer open-source apps installed from F-Droid
- Keeping a private, local calendar that never leaves the phone
Worth knowing
- Android only; the Fossify project lists Android as its sole platform.
- The app has no sync service or cloud account of its own. Syncing depends on accounts or calendar providers configured on the device.
- Development is funded by donations, and help comes through a public issue tracker and community channels.
- Google Play and F-Droid publish releases on their own schedules, so versions can differ between stores.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Fossify Calendar is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
What you could make
- Calendar: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Hooks into the device itself: widgets.
What this rests on. Fossify Calendar’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
