Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 1 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools we grade

FreeAgent is online accounting software for freelancers, contractors and small businesses, made in Edinburgh and owned by NatWest Group. It covers invoices, estimates, expenses, bank feeds, time tracking and projects in one plan. The UK edition adds payroll and HMRC tax filing, while the US edition sold in dollars handles sales tax reports instead.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about FreeAgent, taken from its own pages and our grades.

You link a bank and explain each transaction as money in or out, and the dashboard shows when tax bills are due.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for freelancers who want one plan with no tiers

It's really a UK product, though: payroll and tax filing are UK only, and customers of NatWest and its sister banks get it free.

As its pricing page puts it: $27 per month, billed monthly.

  6. 6

Import transactions daily from linked bank accounts, or upload OFX, QIF and CSV statements, and explain each one as money in or out.

  7. 7

    Expenses and Smart Capture

Photograph receipts on the phone and upload them. Unlimited Smart Capture scanning is a $6 a month add-on.

  8. 8

To replace FreeAgent you would be making live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for freelancers who want one plan with no tiers

FreeAgent is accounting made for freelancers and contractors, with one plan that covers invoices, expenses, bank feeds, time tracking and projects. It's $27 a month in the US, half that for the first 6 months. It's really a UK product, though: payroll and tax filing are UK only, and customers of NatWest and its sister banks get it free.

ToolGPA report cardFreeAgentGraded Oct 17, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCOne plan at $27 a month or $270 a year, between this category's middle at $23 and its dearer quarter at $31.10, with no cheaper tier for someone sending three invoices a month. Everything is in it, though, and the first 6 months are half price.
Free plan and trialCA 30-day free trial with no card needed. There's no free plan in the US. In the UK, NatWest, RBS, Ulster Bank and Mettle business customers get FreeAgent free.
FeaturesCInvoices and estimates, bank feeds, receipt capture, time tracking, project profit, multiple currencies and sales tax reports. The gap is in the listing: the US edition has no payroll, as payroll and HMRC filing belong to the UK one.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record. You link a bank and explain each transaction as money in or out, and the dashboard shows when tax bills are due. It's still bookkeeping to learn, though.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android, with Stripe, Pleo, Float, Chaser and Tyl by NatWest. There's no desktop app, and the bank feeds page names mainly UK banks.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who FreeAgent is for

  • Great if you're a UK sole trader or limited company filing with HMRC
  • Handy when you bank with NatWest, RBS, Ulster Bank or Mettle, as it's free with them
  • Good for contractors who want invoicing, time tracking and books in one plan

Who it is not for

  • Not for you if you run payroll in the US, as the US edition has none
  • Pricey if you only send a few invoices, since there's one $27 plan and nothing smaller
  • Skip it if you want smart receipt scanning included, as unlimited use is $6 a month extra

Good to know

Good for

  • Freelancers and contractors who want invoicing, time and books in one plan
  • UK sole traders and limited companies filing with HMRC
  • NatWest, RBS, Ulster Bank and Mettle customers, who can use it free

Worth knowing

  • The advertised prices are 50% off the first 6 months (or first year, paid annually); it then renews at $27 a month or $270 a year.
  • Payroll, Making Tax Digital and HMRC filing belong to the UK edition; the US edition lists sales tax reports but no payroll.
  • UK prices depend on business type, excluding VAT: £10 a month for landlords, £19 sole traders, £27 partnerships and £33 limited companies.
  • Support comes from accountants based in the UK, and the bank feeds page names mainly UK banks.

Other accounting and invoicing tools it is graded above

FreeAgent's GPA of 2.2 is higher than 1 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools we grade, and level with 2.

It stands best on platforms and integrations (B, above 2 of 17) and worst on free plan and trial (C, above 0).

Its paid plans start at $27 a month, against a middle price of $19 for the category: 10 of the 16 others that charge start lower.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace FreeAgent you would be making live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 14 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools grade higher. It costs $324 a year.

What you could make

  • Invoicing, expense tracking, time tracking and reports: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Stripe, Pleo and Tyl by NatWest among them.

What this rests on. FreeAgent’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
