Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 54 of the 79 other project management tools we grade
GanttProject is an open-source project scheduling app for Windows, macOS and Linux desktops, aimed at small and medium businesses. It covers task scheduling with dependencies, a Gantt chart, resource allocation and cost calculation, and it reads Microsoft Project files. The app runs offline with data kept on the user's computer, and an optional paid service, GanttProject Cloud, adds team collaboration.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about GanttProject, taken from its own pages and our grades.
You download it and it runs offline with no account, but the work is building the schedule yourself, dependency by dependency.
- 1
Best for free Gantt charts on your own computer
It's desktop only, with no web or phone version.
- 2
Paid plans start at about $1.12 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: €1 per active team member / month for the optional Cloud service; desktop app is free.
- 3
There is a free plan
The desktop app is free and open source under GPL3 with every feature; the vendor says unmodified binaries may be used for any purpose, including commercial use, without paying.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Windows, macOS and Linux.
- 5
Gantt chart and task scheduling
Tasks are arranged in a hierarchy with dependencies and milestones and drawn on a Gantt chart, with an option to generate a PERT chart.
- 6
Resource load chart
Assign resources to tasks and see how much work each one carries on a separate resource load chart.
- 7
Baselines and cost calculation
Save baselines to compare the current plan with an earlier one, and calculate the cost of tasks.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 54 of 79
That is against the other project management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for free Gantt charts on your own computer
GanttProject is a free, open-source Gantt chart app for Windows, macOS and Linux that schedules tasks with dependencies, shows resource load and opens Microsoft Project files. It's desktop only, with no web or phone version. Sharing a plan with a team means WebDAV or the Cloud add-on, still in beta and paid from euro credits, and the stable release dates from January 2024.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | The desktop app is free with every feature, commercial use included, where the cheapest quarter of this category starts at $5.10 a user a month. The optional Cloud service is €1 per active team member, and idle members aren't charged. Paying $5 for the download just funds the work. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Free outright, not a free tier: the whole desktop app under GPL3 with nothing held back, and the vendor says the paid and free downloads are identical. There's no cap to hit because there's nothing being metered. |
| Features | C | It does scheduling fully: tasks with dependencies and milestones, a PERT chart, a resource load chart, baselines, costs and Microsoft Project files in and out. That's a smaller job than running a project with a team, though. No boards, no time logging, and sharing is an add-on. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record. You download it and it runs offline with no account, but the work is building the schedule yourself, dependency by dependency. It's also slow-moving: stable 3.3 landed in January 2024. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Windows, macOS and Linux, and that's the lot: no web version and nothing on a phone, so you can't glance at a plan on the way to a meeting. Its connections are file exchange with Microsoft Project and Excel plus export to PDF, HTML and PNG. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who GanttProject is for
- Fits if you want Gantt charts at no cost on Windows, macOS or Linux
- Works for swapping schedules with people who use Microsoft Project
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to check a plan on your phone or in a browser, as it's desktop only
- Not for you if your team edits plans together, unless you set up WebDAV or pay for the Cloud beta
- Watch out: Cloud is billed in euros from prepaid credits, with a €10 minimum top-up
- Too light for people who need every high-end enterprise feature of Microsoft Project, by the vendor's own account
- Watch out: stable 3.3 came out in January 2024, was last updated in January 2025, and 3.4 is still in beta
Good to know

- Small and medium businesses that want Gantt charts at no cost

- Sharing a project with a team needs WebDAV or GanttProject Cloud, which is billed in euros from prepaid credits with a EUR 10 minimum top-up.
- The vendor says it is not designed to replicate every high-end enterprise feature of Microsoft Project.
- The current stable release, 3.3, came out in January 2024 and was last updated in January 2025; version 3.4 is in beta.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of GanttProject you could make: Gantt & timelines. What surrounds it you could not. The 2 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 54 of the 79 other project management tools we grade. It costs $13.45 a year. GanttProject is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could make
- Gantt & timelines: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux that stay in step with each other.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
What this rests on. GanttProject’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
