Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 18 of the 65 other focus apps we grade
Goodtime is a minimalist, open-source productivity timer for Android, with an iOS version in beta. It runs countdown sessions in the Pomodoro style or open-ended count-up sessions, is controlled with swipe gestures and keeps statistics on focused time. There are no ads, tracking or user accounts, and a one-time premium purchase adds labels, extra statistics, and backup and export.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Goodtime, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The iPhone version is still a TestFlight beta, there's no desktop app, and some phones stop it in the background.
- 1
Best for a plain, ad-free Pomodoro timer on Android
It's a timer and nothing more: no task list, no blocking beyond Do Not Disturb.
- 2
What it costs
Paid plans start at $6.99 one-time in-app purchase (Google Play, US).
- 3
There is a free plan
Pomodoro and count-up timers, longer breaks, swipe controls, statistics on focus time, a daily reminder and Do Not Disturb mode, with no ads or tracking.

- 5
Timer profiles
Strict countdown timers suit techniques such as Pomodoro, with longer breaks after several sessions. An open-ended count-up mode builds a break budget as you work.
- 6
Swipe controls
The timer is paused, skipped or extended with swipe gestures on a plain screen, and sessions can be set to start automatically.
- 7
Colored labels
Labels organize sessions by task, each with its own timer settings, and can be archived when finished. Labels are a premium feature.

The report card
Best for a plain, ad-free Pomodoro timer on Android
Goodtime is an open-source Pomodoro timer for Android with no ads, no tracking and no account, and $6.99 once adds labels and backup. It's a timer and nothing more: no task list, no blocking beyond Do Not Disturb. The iPhone version is still a TestFlight beta, there's no desktop app, and some phones stop it in the background.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Premium is $6.99 once on Google Play, not a subscription, when a year of the typical focus app costs around $48. Pay it and you're done: labels, label statistics, backup and export. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Pomodoro and count-up timers, longer breaks, focus-time statistics, a daily reminder and Do Not Disturb, with no ads or tracking. A plan you could live on, as long as you don't mind sessions you can't sort by task: labels are premium, and so is backup. |
| Features | C | Countdown or count-up sessions, swipe controls, statistics, and labels with their own settings plus CSV or JSON export in Premium. It does the timer job completely, and that's the smaller job here: the vendor describes no task list and no blocking beyond Do Not Disturb. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and two things to learn first. Pausing, skipping and extending are swipe gestures on a blank screen, and the README says some Android phones stop the app in the background unless you turn off battery optimisation for it. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Android, and that's the released version. The iOS build is a TestFlight beta rather than an App Store app, and no desktop or web version is listed. Optional sync uses your own Google Drive or iCloud. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Goodtime is for
- Fits if you want a plain Android timer with no ads and no account
- Works for people who use count-up sessions as well as fixed Pomodoro rounds
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want the timer on your laptop or iPhone, as there's no desktop app and iOS is a beta
- Not for you if you need apps or websites blocked, since it stops at Do Not Disturb
- Tight if you're staying free and want sessions sorted by task, because labels, backup and export are premium
- Watch out: some Android phones stop it in the background unless you turn off battery optimization for it
- Too light for planning work, as there's no task list in it
Good to know
Good for
- Android users who want a plain timer with no ads or account
- People who prefer open-source apps whose code they can inspect
- Students tracking study hours
- Count-up flow sessions as well as fixed Pomodoro intervals
Worth knowing
- The iOS version is a beta handed out through TestFlight, not an App Store release, and no desktop or web version is listed.
- Labels, timer customization, label statistics, session editing, backup and export, and picture-in-picture all need the premium purchase.
- The README warns that some Android phones stop the app in the background and advises turning off battery optimization for it.
- It is a timer only: the vendor describes no task list and no app or website blocking beyond Do Not Disturb mode.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A focus timer at its plainest counts down 25 minutes and keeps a log.
You could make the core of Goodtime for yourself: Pomodoro timer and time tracking. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $6.99, paid once, it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it. Goodtime is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could make
- Pomodoro timer and time tracking: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
What this rests on. Goodtime’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
