Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
3.2
GPA, above 129 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade
Google Keep is Google's app for short notes and lists on the web, Android and iOS. A note can hold text, a checklist, photos, a drawing or audio, is organized with labels, colors and pins, and can carry a time or location reminder. Keep is free with a personal Google Account and is also part of Google Workspace, and its notes can be pulled into Google Docs and Slides from a side panel.
To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Google Keep, taken from its own pages and our grades.
There's next to nothing to learn: open it, type the thing, pick a colour if you fancy.
- 1
Best for quick notes and shared shopping lists
Google Keep is Google's free app for short notes and lists, with reminders that fire at a time or place and shared lists that update live.

- 5
Notes, lists, photos, drawings and audio
A note can be text, a checklist, a photo, a drawing or an audio recording. Voice memos are transcribed automatically, and text inside images is picked up by search.

Notes are organized with up to 50 labels, color codes and pins. Search filters by color and by attributes such as lists, audio notes with reminders or shared notes.
- 7
Time and location reminders
A reminder brings a note back at a set time or on arrival at a place, such as a grocery list that appears at the store.
- 8
Refunds: no set window
Keep has no price of its own. Paying for it means paying for Google Workspace, and Workspace has two faces.

The report card
Best for quick notes and shared shopping lists
Google Keep is Google's free app for short notes and lists, with reminders that fire at a time or place and shared lists that update live. It is not built for a large body of notes: organizing is labels, colors and pins, labels stop at 50, there's no desktop app, labels on a shared note show only for you, and making lists with Gemini needs a paid Google AI plan or a Pixel.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free with a personal Google Account, in a category where the middle plan is $6 a month. The paid route is Google Workspace from $7 a user a month on a 1-year commitment, and that's a whole office suite with Keep as one small part of it. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Notes, lists, labels, reminders, sharing and offline use, all free on the web, Android and iOS, with no cap a normal person would meet. The one thing held back is making lists with Gemini, which wants a Google AI plan or a Pixel. |
| Features | C | A note can be text, a checklist, a photo, a drawing or audio, and voice memos get transcribed. Reminders fire at a time or a place, and shared lists update live. But this is the quick-notes job rather than the note-taking one: you organise with colours, pins and up to 50 labels, and that's your lot. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.59 from about 29,000 App Store ratings, just under the 4.7 an A asks for. There's next to nothing to learn: open it, type the thing, pick a colour if you fancy. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, Android, Wear OS, iPhone, iPad and a Chrome extension, with a side panel that drops your notes into Google Docs and Slides. No desktop app at all, though, so on a computer it's a browser tab. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Google Keep is for
- Fits if you want shopping lists and quick notes on your phone and watch
- Works for households sharing a list, since ticked-off items show up in real time
Who it is not for
- Too light for long notes or research, with nothing beyond labels, colors and pins to organize them
- Tight if you label everything, because Keep allows up to 50 labels, and labels on a shared note show only for you
- Skip it if you want a desktop app, as Keep runs in a browser tab on a computer
- Watch out: making lists with Gemini needs a Google AI plan or a Pixel device
- Watch out: the paid route is a Workspace plan from $7 a user a month on a 1-year commitment, and its trial needs billing details
Good to know
Good for
- Quick notes, shopping lists and reminders on a phone or smartwatch
- People who already work in Google Docs and other Google apps
- Households sharing lists that update in real time
Worth knowing
- Keep allows up to 50 labels, and labels, colors and pins on a shared note are visible only to you.
- No desktop app is listed: Keep runs in a browser, as a Chrome extension and as Android, Wear OS, iPhone and iPad apps.
- Creating lists with Gemini in Keep requires a Google AI plan or a Pixel device.
- Workspace Business editions are capped at 300 users; larger organizations need Enterprise pricing from Google sales.

129/147
Other note-taking apps it is graded above
Google Keep's GPA of 3.2 is higher than 129 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade, and level with 8.
It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 100 of 147) and worst on features (C, above 2).
Its paid plans start at $7 a month for each person, against a middle price of $5.83 for the category: 42 of the 66 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.7 out of 4. 14 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Google Keep you could make: notes, tasks and web clipper. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 129 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade. It costs $84 a year.
What you could make
- Notes, tasks and web clipper: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Speech turned into text you can trust.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Google Keep’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
Part 05 · Refunds
After you pay
Getting your money back, getting out, and getting help
What happens once you have paid: whether you can get your money back, how to leave, and how to reach a person when something goes wrong. Each is graded from Google Keep’s own terms and help pages.
Refunds and cancelling
Good · checked Oct 18, 2026
Keep has no price of its own. Paying for it means paying for Google Workspace, and Workspace has two faces. On the monthly Flexible Plan you are treated well: stop whenever you like, Google prorates the account and any credit left over goes back to the card by itself. Take the cheaper one-year commitment, the $7 Business Starter rate, and you owe the rest of the term with nothing refunded. Generous on one plan, nothing on the other, which lands at a B.
- Refund window
- No set window
- How you cancel
- Yourself, in settings
- Getting your money back
Google's Workspace billing help says it prorates billing and refunds unused credit, and that if a credit balance is left after you cancel every subscription it automatically starts a refund to the original payment method. On the Annual/Fixed-Term Plan you commit to pay to the end of the term, and payments through it, paid or pending, are not refunded if you cancel mid-term.
Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com- How to cancel Google Keep
An administrator cancels in the Google Admin console under Billing, then Subscriptions, which needs the Billing management privilege. Google tells you to export user data first. Where Workspace billing runs through Google Play or the iPhone Settings app you cancel in that store, and a subscription bought through a reseller goes through the reseller. Keep on a personal Google Account is free and has nothing to cancel.
- Download anything you want to keep with the Data Export tool first
- In the Google Admin console, open Billing, then Subscriptions
- Click the subscription, then More, then Cancel Subscription
- Choose a reason and click Continue to cancel
- Look through the alternatives offered and click Continue to cancel again
- Tick the confirmation box, type your email address and click Cancel My Subscription
- What you keep afterwards
Google says you lose the core Workspace services and that users' Workspace data is deleted after cancellation and cannot be restored, so export it first. If you keep Cloud Identity you still reach Keep, along with Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides, but the Workspace-only admin controls go and shared drive data becomes view-only. Cancelling does not by itself remove user accounts, groups or your organisational structure.
Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com- Renewals
Google says an Annual/Fixed-Term contract renews by itself for another year unless you act, and that it tells you 30 days and again 3 days before the renewal date. Auto-renewal can be switched off in the Admin console, which suspends the service at the end of the term until you turn it back on. The Flexible Plan simply bills monthly until cancelled.
Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com
In your favour
- Keep is free on a personal Google Account, so most people have nothing to cancel at all.
- On the monthly Flexible Plan you stop when you like and Google prorates what you have used.
- Any credit left after you cancel everything goes back to your card without you asking.
- Google warns you 30 days and then 3 days before an annual contract renews, which few rivals bother with.
Watch out for
- The $7 Business Starter rate needs a one-year commitment, and leaving early still costs the rest of the term.
- On that annual plan you cannot cut licences part-way through either.
- Workspace data is deleted after cancellation and cannot be restored, so export before you press the button.
- Keep Cloud Identity and you can still open Keep, but shared drive files turn view-only.
Customer support
Excellent · checked Oct 18, 2026
Keep itself has a free help centre and a help forum, and that is all a personal account gets. Pay for Workspace and a real person is a few clicks away: an administrator types Contact support in the Admin console and is queued for a live agent, or opens an email case instead. Google states the hours, 24 hours a day in English everywhere it operates, and a target of a first reply inside one business day. Stated live help with stated hours is an A.
Ways to get help
Live chat
A Workspace administrator clicks Get help in the Admin console, describes the problem, types Contact support and picks Chat, then waits to be connected to a Google support representative. It needs the Support administrator privilege.
Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.comEmail
The same Get help flow offers Email instead of chat, which opens a support case with Google. Like chat it is for administrators with the Support administrator privilege, not for ordinary users.
Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.comHelp centre
Google Keep Help holds free articles on getting started, using Keep, sharing notes, reminders and labels, browsable without signing in.
Stated on support.google.comCommunity or forum
The Keep Help page links a Google Keep Help forum. Following that link today lands on Google's general Product Forums page rather than a Keep-specific board.
Stated on support.google.com
Not listed on Google Keep’s pages: phone.
- When people answer
Google's support languages table lists English support as 24/7 in every country it covers, with local-language cover 24/7 in many. A few are business hours only: German in Austria and Dutch and French in Belgium are given as 9:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday, UTC+1.
Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com- How fast it says it replies
Google says cases are investigated by priority level and time of submission and that you can expect an initial response within 1 business day or less. It sets out four priority levels, from a critical outage down to a cosmetic fault, and states no time by which anything will be fixed, saying that depends on the complexity.
Stated on knowledge.workspace.google.com- What depends on your plan
Standard Support comes with every Workspace edition, Business Starter included. Enhanced Support, paid on Business Standard and Plus and bundled with Enterprise, states a one-hour response for the most critical cases and 24/7 cover for the top two priorities. Premium Support, paid on Enterprise, states 15 minutes for the most critical and 24/7 for the top three.
Stated on workspace.google.com
In your favour
- Live chat with a Google agent comes with every paid edition, not only the expensive ones.
- English support is stated as running 24 hours a day, every day, wherever Google sells Workspace.
- Google commits to a target of a first reply within one business day or less.
- Keep's own help centre is free and open to anyone, paying or not.
Watch out for
- Only an administrator with the right privilege can open a case, so everyone else goes through them.
- On a free personal Google Account there is no way to reach a person about Keep at all.
- Google states a first-reply target but no time by which a problem will be fixed.
- The forum link on Keep's help page leads to Google's general Product Forums, not a Keep board.
What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Google's Workspace admin help on cancelling a subscription, refunding remaining credit and renewing an annual contract, its pages on contacting Workspace support and on support languages and hours, the Customer Care page, and the Google Keep Help centre. These are account-wide Workspace rules rather than policies for Keep. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
