Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 36 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade

Hammerspoon is a free, open-source automation tool for macOS that connects system APIs to a Lua scripting engine. Users write a Lua configuration file that ties events, such as a hotkey, a Wi-Fi change or an app launching, to actions such as moving windows, showing alerts or running AppleScript. It does nothing until it is configured, and pre-made plugins called Spoons cover common jobs.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Hammerspoon, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No rating is on record, and the site says it plainly: out of the box it does nothing.

The report card

Best for scripting your Mac in Lua

Hammerspoon is a free, open-source tool for scripting your Mac in Lua: bind a hotkey to a window layout, or mute the volume when you leave your home Wi-Fi. Out of the box it does nothing, so every behavior is code you write in a config file or a Spoon you load. It's Mac only, the current release needs macOS 13, it needs Accessibility permission, and it collects crash data unless you turn that off.

Value for moneyAFree and open source under the MIT licence, a plain download, with every extension included. The developers don't even take donations, and suggest you give to a charity instead.
Free plan and trialAThe whole app is free, as a direct download or a Homebrew cask. There's no paid version to compare it with.
FeaturesBIt hands Lua the Mac's own controls for apps, windows, screens, audio, batteries, Wi-Fi, the clipboard and keyboard and mouse events, so hotkeys, saved window layouts, event watchers and menu bar items are all in reach. Nothing in the listing shows a gap in what it can automate.
Ease of useDNo rating is on record, and the site says it plainly: out of the box it does nothing. Every behaviour is Lua you write in ~/.hammerspoon/init.lua, or a Spoon you load from it, and you grant the Accessibility permission by hand.
Platforms and integrationsDMac only, one operating system, and release 1.1.1 needs macOS 13.0 or later. It can talk to AppleScript, Spotify, Messages, Stream Deck and Asana, and other apps can trigger it through hammerspoon:// URLs.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Hammerspoon is for

  • Fits if you're comfortable writing Lua and want your Mac to behave your way
  • Works for people who want several apps' windows put into a saved layout from one shortcut

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you don't want to write code, because nothing works until you've scripted it
  • Not for you if you're on Windows or Linux, as it's macOS only
  • Not for you if you'd rather nothing was collected by default, as crash information is until you turn it off
  • Tight if your Mac is older, since release 1.1.1 needs macOS 13.0 and earlier systems need an earlier release
  • Watch out: it depends on the Accessibility permission, which you grant by hand in the privacy settings

Good to know

Good for

  • Mac users comfortable writing Lua who want to script their own automation
  • Custom window management driven by keyboard shortcuts
  • Triggering actions from system events such as joining a Wi-Fi network

Worth knowing

  • macOS only. Release 1.1.1 lists a minimum of macOS 13.0; older Macs need an earlier release.
  • Out of the box it does nothing: every behavior has to be written in Lua in ~/.hammerspoon/init.lua or added as a Spoon.
  • It depends on the macOS Accessibility permission, which the user has to grant by hand in the system's privacy settings.
  • Crash information is collected by default; the FAQ says this can be turned off in the preferences.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Hammerspoon is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces.

What you could not

  • Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
  • Control over other apps' windows.
  • A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Hammerspoon’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
