Best for bulk checks of status codes and redirect chains

httpstatus.io checks up to 100 URLs at a time in the browser for free, showing each status code, its headers and every redirect hop with its latency, and can send requests as Googlebot or Bingbot. It doesn't crawl a site, though, and anything scripted runs through a paid API priced in euros, whose free 500 calls are one-time and not for commercial use.

Who httpstatus.io is for

  • Fits if you're checking redirects in bulk after a site migration
  • Works for developers adding status and redirect checks to scripts or no-code flows

Who httpstatus.io is not for

  • Too light for a site audit, as it takes 100 URLs a batch and doesn't crawl
  • Watch out: API prices are in euros before VAT, and the free 500 calls are one-time and non-commercial
  • Tight if you're on Starter, which stops at 20,000 calls a month; higher plans bill each call over
  • Not for you if your staging site lets visitors in by IP, as it has no fixed address

Why httpstatus.io gets a 3.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for moneyThe web checker is free, with batches of up to 100 URLs, and the help page says it will stay free. The API starts at €10 once for 10,000 calls that don't expire, or €15 a month for 20,000.
  • AFree plan and trialThe browser checker costs nothing, with no cap beyond 100 URLs per batch. The API's free plan is a one-time 500 calls at 1 a second, and not for commercial use.
  • DFeaturesStatus codes, headers, redirect chains of up to 10 hops, custom user agents, a canonical domain check and exports to Sheets, CSV or XLS. That's one narrow job: it checks the URLs you paste and doesn't crawl a site.
  • BEase of useNo rating on record. You paste a list of URLs into the page and the results come back, with nothing to install.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsWeb, with a JSON API and connections to Google Sheets, Make, Airtable, n8n, Pipedream, Retool, Baserow and NocoDB. No desktop or phone app.

Keep httpstatus.io, or make your own?

Your call

httpstatus.io sits between: not beyond making, and not a weekend's work either.

What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $11.21, paid once, it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.

What you could make

  • It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.

What you could not

  • A crawler that checks every page of a site.
  • It plugs into other products, Google Sheets, Make and Airtable among them, and has an API.

What this rests on. httpstatus.io’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

What is httpstatus.io?

httpstatus.io is a free web tool that checks up to 100 URLs at a time and shows each one's status code, response headers and full redirect chain, with the latency of every hop. Requests can be sent as Googlebot, Bingbot or a chosen browser, with custom headers or basic authentication. A paid API, priced in euros, does the same checks one URL per request for scripts and no-code workflows.

Worth knowing

  • The web checker takes 100 URLs per batch and does not crawl a site; the help page points to crawlers for larger jobs.
  • API prices are in euros and exclude VAT, and the API's free 500 calls are one-time and not for commercial use.
  • Starter stops at 20,000 calls a month; higher plans bill overage per call instead of stopping.
  • It has no fixed IP address, so a staging site cannot allow it by IP; the help page suggests a secret request header.
