Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 10 of the 24 other presentation tools we grade
iA Presenter is a presentation app for Mac, iPad and iPhone in which a talk is written as Markdown text rather than laid out slide by slide. Headings and images become slide content, ordinary paragraphs become private speaker notes, and the app picks a responsive layout for each slide. Decks can be exported to PDF, PowerPoint, HTML, images or Markdown, or published as a web link from the Mac app.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about iA Presenter, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Headings and pictures go on screen, your paragraphs stay private as speaker notes, and the app picks the layouts.
- 1
Best for speakers who'd rather write a script than build slides
iA Presenter flips the usual order: you write your talk as text, and the slides come out of it.
- 2
Paid plans start at $3.95 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $3.95 per month, billed yearly ($47.40); one-time from $19.99.
- 3
You can try it first
7-day free trial on Mac, no credit card required
- 4
It runs on 2 platforms
macOS and iOS.
- 5
Text-first editor
A talk is written in a Markdown editor. Titles and visuals show on the slide, while regular paragraphs stay as speaker notes that only the presenter sees.
- 6
Automatic layouts
The app analyzes each slide's content and chooses a layout that adapts to the display. Fixed aspect ratios are also available, including 16:9, 4:3, 9:16 and square.
- 7
Themes and custom themes
Built-in themes can be adjusted for fonts, colors, headers and footers, and every slide updates to match. Custom themes can be written from scratch in HTML and CSS.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 10 of 24
That is against the other presentation tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for speakers who'd rather write a script than build slides
iA Presenter flips the usual order: you write your talk as text, and the slides come out of it. Headings and pictures go on screen, your paragraphs stay private as speaker notes, and the app picks the layouts. It's $3.95 a month on the yearly plan, but there's no free version past a 7-day trial, it's Mac, iPad and iPhone only, PowerPoint export is beta, and one-time licenses are per platform.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | The yearly plan is $3.95 a month, billed $47.40, covering Mac, iPad and iPhone, where this category's lower quarter starts at $5.83 and the middle is $9.99. Or buy once: $89 for the Mac, less than a year of that middle subscription, and $19.99 for iPad and iPhone. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan at all. What you get is a 7-day trial on the Mac with no credit card asked for, and after that it's a subscription or a one-time purchase per platform. |
| Features | C | Write the talk, get the slides: automatic layouts, a teleprompter beside what the audience sees, Markdown tables that turn into charts, themes you can write in HTML and CSS. It finishes that job, but it is a smaller job than the rest of this category, and PowerPoint export is beta with Web Sharing Mac-only. |
| Ease of use | C | No App Store rating on record. The app picks each layout for you, which saves fiddling, but you need a bit of Markdown and writing a script instead of dragging boxes is a different habit to learn. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | One family of devices: Mac, iPad and iPhone, with no Windows, Android or web version on the pricing page. Unsplash and YouTube are the only hook-ups listed, though a deck can go out as a web link from the Mac app. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who iA Presenter is for
- Fits if you'd rather write what you're going to say than fiddle with slide layouts
- Works for teachers who keep detailed notes behind slides with little on them
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you're on Windows or Android, as it's Apple devices only
- Not for you if you want it free, because after 7 days it needs a subscription or a purchase
- Pricey if you buy outright for every device, since one-time payments are per platform and major updates may cost extra
- Watch out: Web Sharing runs from the Mac app only, isn't in App Store purchases, and is $9.99 a year per GB on the $89 license
- Tight if you hand decks to PowerPoint users, as PowerPoint export is labeled beta
Good to know
Good for
- Speakers who would rather write a script than arrange slides
- Markdown users who want slides and a readable handout from one text file
- Teachers and lecturers who keep detailed notes behind sparse slides
Worth knowing
- There is no free plan: after the 7-day Mac trial it needs a subscription or a one-time purchase, and one-time purchases are charged per platform.
- The pricing page lists Mac, iPad and iPhone only; there is no Windows, Android or web version on it.
- Web Sharing runs from the Mac app and is not included with App Store purchases; one-time Mac licenses get a short trial of it.
- iA says a one-time payment covers the current version and major updates may cost extra. PowerPoint export is labeled beta.

Markdown presentation app that builds slides from your script. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: one-time purchase, Markdown, presentations.
It finishes that job, but it is a smaller job than the rest of this category, and PowerPoint export is beta with Web Sharing Mac-only.
- Text-first editor
- A talk is written in a Markdown editor. Titles and visuals show on the slide, while regular paragraphs stay as speaker notes that only the presenter sees.

- Themes and custom themes
- Built-in themes can be adjusted for fonts, colors, headers and footers, and every slide updates to match. Custom themes can be written from scratch in HTML and CSS.
- Teleprompter
- Presentation mode shows the script on a teleprompter beside the slides the audience sees, with a timer. On iPhone and iPad, speaker notes appear as subtitles instead.
- Tables and charts
- Tables are written in Markdown, and adding a line of metadata turns a table into a chart that stays in sync with its data. CSV blocks handle larger datasets.
- Export and Web Sharing
- Exports to PDF, PowerPoint (beta), HTML, images and Markdown. Web Sharing, in the Mac app, publishes a deck as a link that stays available for one year by default.
