Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 0 of the 17 other file storage and sync services we grade

Icedrive is a cloud storage service from Ice Privacy LTD, a company based in Gibraltar. Its desktop app mounts cloud storage as a virtual drive on Windows, macOS and Linux, alongside web, iOS and Android apps. Paid plans add client-side, zero-knowledge encryption with the Twofish algorithm, folder sync and file versioning, and are sold as 2 TB to 6 TB subscriptions or as one-time lifetime purchases of 100 GB to 2 TB.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Icedrive, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for cloud storage that shows up as an extra drive

Icedrive mounts your cloud storage as an extra drive, so files open in your normal apps without being copied to disk first, and paid plans encrypt on your device.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $8.25 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $9.99 per month, or $99 billed yearly.

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

10 GB of storage with the virtual drive, web and mobile apps and public links. No desktop sync, file versioning or client-side encryption.

  4. 4

    It runs on 6 platforms

Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Virtual drive

The desktop app mounts cloud storage as a drive on Windows, macOS and Linux, so files open in native applications without being synced to disk first. It is included on every plan, Free among them.

  6. 6

    Client-side Twofish encryption

On paid plans, files and their names are encrypted on the device with the Twofish algorithm before upload. The key is generated from a passphrase and is never sent to Icedrive's servers.

  7. 7

    Desktop sync and file versions

Paid plans sync folder pairs on 3, 5 or 10 devices and keep earlier versions of files for 30, 60 or 90 days, depending on the plan.

  8. 8

    A 2.2 GPA, above 0 of 17

That is against the other file storage and sync services we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace Icedrive you would be making files kept in step across devices without losing one. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for cloud storage that shows up as an extra drive

Icedrive mounts your cloud storage as an extra drive, so files open in your normal apps without being copied to disk first, and paid plans encrypt on your device. The free plan has no desktop sync, the smallest subscription is 2 TB at $9.99 a month, encrypted files can't be shared, and WebDAV is being phased out.

ToolGPA report cardIcedriveGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDThe only subscription on offer is $9.99 a month, which is where the dearest tenth of this category begins, against a $5 middle. There's no smaller plan, so 200 GB costs the same as 2 TB. The lifetime route is dearer still: $199 once for 100 GB, when $1.99 a month rents the same space elsewhere.
Free plan and trialC10 GB free with the virtual drive, the web and phone apps and public links, but the walls come fast: no desktop sync, no file versions, no client-side encryption and no password on a link. Leave the account idle a year and it may be removed.
FeaturesCThe storage basics plus the mounted drive, with Twofish encryption, sync and 30 to 90 days of versions on paid plans. The listing's own gaps keep it here: files in the encrypted area can't be shared at all, and WebDAV was switched off for new users and is being phased out.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, but nothing to set up either: install the desktop app and your storage turns up as a drive in Explorer or Finder, where files open in your usual apps without syncing first.
Platforms and integrationsBEvery device is covered, web, Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, with an AppImage and a command-line client for Linux. What's missing is everything else: no integrations, no API, and WebDAV on the way out.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Icedrive is for

  • Fits if you want cloud files to show up as a drive, not get copied onto your disk
  • Works for people who'd rather pay once, with lifetime plans from 100 GB to 2 TB

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free: no desktop sync, file versions or encryption, and idle accounts may be removed after 12 months
  • Skip it if you need to share encrypted files, as anything in the encrypted area can't be shared
  • Pricey if you only need a little space, since subscriptions start at 2 TB for $9.99 a month, the dear end of this category
  • Watch out: lifetime plans allow just 2 sync devices and 14 days of versions, and start at $199 for 100 GB
  • Not for you if you rely on WebDAV or an API: WebDAV is off for new users and no API is listed

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want cloud storage mounted as a drive rather than synced to disk
  • Buyers who prefer a one-time lifetime payment to a subscription
  • Individuals who need 2 TB to 6 TB with client-side encryption included
  • Linux users: the desktop app ships as an AppImage and a command-line client

Worth knowing

  • Client-side, zero-knowledge encryption is limited to paid plans, and files stored in the encrypted area cannot be shared.
  • The Free plan has 10 GB and no desktop sync, file versions, link passwords or user-to-user sharing. Free accounts inactive for 12 months may be removed.
  • WebDAV was disabled for new users on 15 April 2026 and is being phased out for existing users.
  • Lifetime plans allow 2 sync devices and 14 days of file versions, fewer than any subscription plan.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Icedrive you would be making files kept in step across devices without losing one. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 16 of the 17 other file storage and sync services grade higher. It costs $99 a year.

What you could not

  • Files kept in step across devices without losing one.
  • Storing and serving files for other people.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • End-to-end encryption done properly.

What this rests on. Icedrive’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
