Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 30 of the 74 other calendar and scheduling apps we grade
Itsycal is a small calendar that lives in the Mac menu bar, made by an independent developer who publishes as Mowglii. It shows a month grid with an agenda of events from the calendars set up in the Mac Calendar app, can create and delete events, and offers a button to join virtual meetings. The app is free, its source code is on GitHub under the MIT license, and the developer accepts donations.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Itsycal, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It's Mac only, Gregorian only, and can't show delegate calendars directly.
- 1

- 2
It is free

The report card
Best for a free month view in your Mac's menu bar
Itsycal is a small month grid in your Mac's menu bar, with your events underneath and a Join button for calls, free and open source. It's a view onto the Mac Calendar app rather than a calendar: it shows only what's set up there, and you can add and delete events but not edit them. It's Mac only, Gregorian only, and can't show delegate calendars directly.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free, against a $6 a month middle in this category. The whole app is a direct download, the code is on GitHub under the MIT license, and donations are optional. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Free outright, with no paid version holding anything back and no trial clock ticking. Donations through Ko-fi, PayPal and Cash App are entirely optional. |
| Features | D | It's a window onto a calendar rather than a calendar: it shows only what the Mac Calendar app already holds, and without that it does nothing at all. Inside that one job you get a month grid, an agenda, a Join button and Vim-style keys, but events can be created and deleted, not edited. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record, as it isn't on the App Store, but there's nothing to set up: download it and it shows whatever calendars your Mac already has ticked. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | One operating system: Mac, needing macOS 11 or later, with no iPhone, Windows or web version. It will open Zoom and Teams links and hand off to Fantastical or BusyCal. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Itsycal is for
- Fits if you want a quick look at the month without opening a calendar app
- Works for Mac users who steer with the keyboard, Vim keys included
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you're not on a Mac, because there's no other version
- Not for you if you want to edit events from the menu bar, as it only creates and deletes
- Too light for anyone wanting a calendar of its own, since it only shows what's in the Mac Calendar app
- Watch out: only the Gregorian calendar is supported, and delegate calendars can't be shown directly
- Watch out: the current download needs macOS 11 or later, with a separate build for macOS 27
Good to know
Good for
- Mac users who want a quick month view without opening a calendar app
- People who navigate by keyboard and like Vim-style keys
- Anyone looking for a free, open-source menu bar calendar
Worth knowing
- Mac only, and it depends on the Mac Calendar app: it shows only calendars already set up there.
- Events can be created and deleted but not edited; the project's README says editing is not supported.
- Only the Gregorian calendar is supported, and delegate calendars cannot be shown directly.
- The current download needs macOS 11 or later (macOS 27 has its own build); older versions cover earlier systems.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Itsycal is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces.
What you could make
- Calendar: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A native app living in the menu bar.
- A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Apple Calendar, Fantastical and BusyCal among them.
What this rests on. Itsycal’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
