Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 73 of the 79 other project management tools we grade

Jira is Atlassian's tool for planning and tracking work, used for software development, bug tracking and general project management. Work items move through customizable workflows and can be viewed on boards, lists, a timeline or a calendar. Paid plans are priced per user, with lower rates at higher user counts, and Atlassian has announced new list prices from October 13, 2026.

To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Jira, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Someone still has to sit down and decide your team's statuses and steps, because the workflows are yours to define.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for software teams tracking bugs and releases

Jira is Atlassian's tracker for bugs and development work, built around workflows your team designs.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $9.70 a month for each person

As its pricing page puts it: $9.70 per user / month, billed monthly (Standard, 1 to 100 users).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Free plan for up to 10 users: 2 GB of file storage, 150 automation steps per subscription and community support.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Boards, lists, timeline and calendar

Projects are broken down into work items that can be tracked on boards, in lists, on a timeline or on a calendar.

  6. 6

    Customizable workflows

Each team can define its own workflow of statuses and steps and connect it to the other tools in its stack.

  7. 7

    Bug and issue tracking

Teams log bugs as work items and follow them through to resolution, with connections to code hosts such as Bitbucket and GitHub.

  8. 8

    Refunds: 30 days

Atlassian puts 30 days in writing for a first purchase of Jira, monthly or annual, and a billing admin shuts the subscription down in the admin console without phoning anyone. It stops at a B because that window is the only one there is: the same page says renewals and upgrades cannot be refunded at all, and you have to ask for the money rather than click for it.

  9. 9

    A 3.2 GPA, above 73 of 79

That is against the other project management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  10. 10

    Keep it

To replace Jira you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for software teams tracking bugs and releases

Jira is Atlassian's tracker for bugs and development work, built around workflows your team designs. Teams of up to 10 can use it free with 2 GB of files and 150 automation steps. Standard rose to $9.70 a user a month on October 13, 2026, annual billing comes in fixed user tiers, and sandboxes, release tracks and advanced planning wait on Premium at $19.60.

Value for moneyCStandard is $9.70 a user a month billed monthly since October 13, 2026, above this category's $8 middle. Annual billing saves about 18% but is sold in fixed tiers of 10, 15, 25 or 50 users, so you pay for seats you may not fill.
Free plan and trialBFree for up to 10 users with 2 GB of file storage and community support. The caps are real, though: 2 GB of files, and 150 automation steps for the whole subscription rather than per person.
FeaturesABoards, lists, a timeline and a calendar, workflows each team shapes itself, bug tracking wired to Bitbucket and GitHub, rule-based automation, plans and goals and Rovo AI. The Marketplace lists over 3,000 integrations, the most in this category. Advanced planning needs Premium.
Ease of useA4.7 on the App Store from 40,574 ratings. Someone still has to sit down and decide your team's statuses and steps, because the workflows are yours to define.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android, and no desktop app, which is what keeps it off the top mark. It connects to Bitbucket, GitHub, Jenkins and Slack, to Copilot, Claude and Cursor, and there's an API behind the Marketplace.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Jira is for

  • Fits if you're a software team tracking bugs and development work through set stages
  • Works for teams of up to 10 that can stay within 2 GB on the Free plan

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you only want a simple shared list, because Jira is built around workflows you set up
  • Tight if your free team grows past 10 users, 2 GB of files or 150 automation steps for the whole subscription
  • Pricey if you need sandboxes, release tracks, advanced planning or an uptime SLA, which are Premium at $19.60 a user a month
  • Watch out: annual billing is sold in fixed tiers of 10, 15, 25, 50 or 100 users, so you pay for seats you may not fill
  • Watch out: there's no desktop app, and Free gets community support only

Good to know

Good for

  • Software teams tracking bugs and development work
  • Teams of up to 10 that can stay on the Free plan
  • Organizations that already use other Atlassian tools
  • Nonprofits and open source projects that qualify for free licenses

Worth knowing

  • New list prices take effect October 13, 2026: Standard rises to $9.70 and Premium to $19.60 per user / month on monthly billing.
  • The Free plan stops at 10 users and 2 GB of file storage.
  • Annual billing is sold in fixed user tiers such as 10, 15, 25, 50 and 100 users rather than per individual seat.
  • Sandbox, release tracks, advanced planning and an uptime SLA are only on Premium and Enterprise.

Part 02 · Tips

Insider tips

What most people miss: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches

7

Things most people miss, each from its own help pages

The things about Jira that are easy to miss until they cost you: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches at renewal or when you leave. Each one is from Jira’s own pages, linked beside it.

Read on Oct 17, 2026. Read from Atlassian's Jira Cloud help (the Free plan, keyboard shortcuts, backups), its billing help on monthly user counts and its cloud pricing FAQ on 17 October 2026. Not tried out: these tips are what its own pages say.

  1. 1

    Privacy

On the Free plan, everyone is an admin of every space

Atlassian's help says space permissions, roles and work-level security can't be customised on Free, and on a site that has always been Free, everyone with access to Jira is an admin for all spaces. There are no audit logs either. Keep that in mind before you invite a contractor.

    support.atlassian.com
  2. 2

    Easy to miss

Free Jira stops sending emails after 100 a day

Free sites can send at most 100 notification emails a day, then they pause until the next day. With 10 busy people that runs out fast. Upgrade and Atlassian says the cap can take up to 30 days to lift, so don't upgrade the morning of a launch for this.

    support.atlassian.com
  3. 3

    Leaving

A Free site nobody opens can be shut down

Atlassian reserves the right to deactivate Free sites for inactivity, and admins get warning emails first. Opening a dashboard, checking a report or viewing a work item counts as activity. So if you park a Free site for a while, look in now and then, or take a backup.

    support.atlassian.com
  4. 4

    Pay less

Taking someone off mid-month won't cut that month's bill

Monthly bills are based on the most users you had at any point in the period. Take 3 people off on day five and you still pay for them that month, with no credit. The next bill starts from the count on the last day, so remove leavers before the period ends.

    support.atlassian.com
  5. 5

    Renewal

Yearly plans renew at the new list prices

Atlassian's pricing FAQ says annual renewals on or after October 13, 2026 pay the new list price, and monthly bills from that date use it too. Renewal quotes go out 90 days before your term ends, and you can only buy the renewal inside that window.

    atlassian.com
  6. 6

    Shortcut

Press I to take a work item, C to create one

C creates a work item, I assigns the selected one to you, A assigns it to someone else and M adds a quick comment. J and K move down and up the list. Press ? for the full list, and turn shortcuts on or off under Help → Keyboard shortcuts.

    support.atlassian.com
  7. 7

    Leaving

Backups with attachments can only be made every 48 hours

Go to Settings → System → Backup manager and choose Create backup for cloud, then Download backup file when it's done. Include attachments, avatars or logos and you must wait 48 hours before the next. Automation flows and third-party app data aren't included.

Part 05 · Standing

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

73/79

Other project management tools it is graded above

Jira's GPA of 3.2 is higher than 73 of the 79 other project management tools we grade, and level with 5.

It stands best on features (A, above 75 of 79) and worst on value for money (C, above 16).

Its paid plans start at $9.70 a month for each person, against a middle price of $8 for the category: 44 of the 74 others that charge start lower.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 3.7 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Jira you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 73 of the 79 other project management tools we grade. It costs $116.40 a year.

What you could make

  • Issue tracking, tasks, kanban boards and Gantt & timelines: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features A, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Jira’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

Refunds and cancelling

BGrade

Good · checked Oct 18, 2026

Atlassian puts 30 days in writing for a first purchase of Jira, monthly or annual, and a billing admin shuts the subscription down in the admin console without phoning anyone. It stops at a B because that window is the only one there is: the same page says renewals and upgrades cannot be refunded at all, and you have to ask for the money rather than click for it. Cancel mid-cycle and nothing is credited back.

Refund window
30 days
How you cancel
Yourself, in settings
Getting your money back

Atlassian's refund page says you can request a refund if it is your initial purchase of the app and you ask within 30 days of buying, and that after that no refund can be offered. A monthly cloud subscription is refundable only within the first paid month after the trial, a new annual one only within 30 days of purchase. Renewals, upgrades and usage-based charges are not refundable, and Enterprise is excluded.

Stated on support.atlassian.com
How to cancel Jira

A Jira subscription is ended by deactivating it in the billing section of the Atlassian admin console, which billing admins, organization admins and site administrators can do. On Atlassian's older billing experience the same is done from the my.atlassian.com account page, where organization admins, site admins and billing contacts can cancel. Enterprise plans are handled by writing to Atlassian instead.

  1. Sign in to the billing section of the Atlassian admin console and pick the billing account if there is more than one
  2. Select Subscriptions and find the Jira subscription
  3. Select Manage on that subscription
  4. Open more actions and select Deactivate
  5. Review the cancellation and confirm it
Stated on support.atlassian.com
What you keep afterwards

Atlassian says a deactivated subscription stops renewing, the site stays reachable for 15 more days after the subscription period ends, and the product data is then kept for a period that varies by plan. Free plans are deactivated immediately and deactivating during a trial ends the trial. Personal data can be deleted at once on request, and the page points to Atlassian's export instructions.

Stated on support.atlassian.com
Renewals

Atlassian's cloud terms say a subscription term renews automatically at the rates current at the time, for a term matching the last one, or twelve months where the last was a year or more, and that either side may decline to renew by giving notice before the term ends. No notice period and no reminder are stated. The cancellation page adds that no credit is offered for cancelling mid-cycle.

Stated on atlassian.com

In your favour

  • Thirty days to undo a first purchase of Jira, on monthly and annual billing alike, written down rather than implied.
  • A billing or site admin deactivates the subscription in the admin console, with nobody to phone.
  • The site stays reachable for 15 days after the period ends, so there is room to get the data out.
  • No notice period: declining to renew before the term ends is all that is asked.

Watch out for

  • Renewals and upgrades cannot be refunded at all, so those 30 days really are a first-purchase offer.
  • You have to ask Atlassian for the refund; there is no button that returns the money.
  • Deactivate mid-cycle and you get no credit: it simply takes effect at the end of the cycle.
  • How long data survives after the site is deactivated depends on the plan, which the page leaves vague.

Customer support

BGrade

Good · checked Oct 18, 2026

Atlassian is unusually frank about what support buys you, and publishes the numbers: on Standard, a first reply inside two business hours when Jira is down, 9 hours a day Monday to Friday, three business days for a how-to question. Premium is round the clock for the worst problems. Three things keep it off an A: no live chat on any plan, a phone number only on Enterprise, and a free Jira site gets the forum and the docs rather than a queue.

Ways to get help

  • Phone

A dedicated phone number comes with Enterprise, alongside a dedicated senior support team. The same comparison lists inbound phone support as not available on Standard.

    Stated on confluence.atlassian.com
  • Contact form or ticket

A support request raised with Atlassian's cloud support team. The support offerings page says the people entitled to raise one are the product and site admins of Standard, Premium and Enterprise sites, with organization admins added on Premium and Enterprise.

    Stated on confluence.atlassian.com
  • Help centre

Jira Cloud documentation and a knowledge base on Atlassian Support, readable without signing in, covering projects, boards, administration, billing and deactivating a subscription.

    Stated on support.atlassian.com
  • Community or forum

The Atlassian Community's Jira questions board, a public forum where users and Atlassian staff answer questions. The Jira pricing page gives this as the support that comes with the Free plan.

    Stated on community.atlassian.com

Not listed on Jira’s pages: live chat.

When people answer

The support offerings page states technical support hours of 9 hours a day, Monday to Friday, on Standard. Premium is round the clock for an application-down issue, 24/5 for serious degradation and 9 hours Monday to Friday below that. Enterprise is round the clock for every technical issue. The Jira pricing page words the same thing as 9/5 regional support and 24/7 support for critical issues.

Stated on confluence.atlassian.com
How fast it says it replies

Atlassian publishes initial response targets by severity. Standard aims at 2 business hours for an application down, 6 business hours for serious degradation, 1 business day for moderate impact, 2 business days for low impact and 3 business days for a how-to question, which it marks as beta. Premium aims at 1 hour for an application down, Enterprise at 30 minutes.

Stated on confluence.atlassian.com
What depends on your plan

The Jira pricing page gives support from the Atlassian Community on Free, 9/5 regional support with a 2-hour response for critical issues on Standard, 24/7 support for critical issues with a 1-hour response on Premium, and 24/7 support for all issues on Enterprise with a 30-minute response, a dedicated phone number and a senior support team. Support is bundled with the paid licence rather than sold separately.

Stated on atlassian.com

In your favour

  • Atlassian publishes first-reply targets by severity, which almost nobody else in this category does.
  • Premium buys round-the-clock cover when Jira is down, not only office hours.
  • The documentation, the knowledge base and the community forum are open to everyone, free sites included.
  • Support comes with the paid licence rather than as another line on the bill.

Watch out for

  • A free Jira site gets the forum and the docs: no ticket, no person.
  • Only product and site admins may raise a request, so everyone else has to go through one of them.
  • There is no live chat on any plan, and the phone number is Enterprise only.
  • On Standard a how-to question has a three-business-day target, which is a long wait for a small question.

What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Atlassian's pages on requesting a refund and on deactivating a subscription, the Atlassian cloud terms of service, the support offerings comparison with its response targets, the Jira pricing page, the Jira Cloud support site and the Atlassian Community. These are Atlassian's account-wide billing rules, not a Jira-only policy. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
