Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.6

GPA, above 144 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Joplin is a free, open source note-taking and to-do app for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Notes are written in Markdown or a rich text editor, kept on the device first, and synchronized through a service of your choice such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud or the paid Joplin Cloud, with optional end-to-end encryption. Joplin Cloud adds note publishing, shared notebooks and a browser-based web app.

To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Joplin, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for free, open source notes synced your own way

The web app and notebook sharing need Joplin Cloud, priced in euros.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at about $2.69 a month

As its pricing page puts it: 2.40€ per month, billed yearly at 28.69€ (Joplin Cloud Basic).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

The Joplin apps are free and open source, and can sync through your own Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud, WebDAV or S3 storage. Joplin Cloud is an optional paid service.

  4. 4

    It runs on 6 platforms

Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and Web, with a browser extension too.

  5. 5

    Markdown notes and to-dos

Notes and to-dos are written in Markdown or a rich text editor, organized into notebooks with tags, and found through full-text search on every platform.

  6. 6

    Multimedia, math and diagrams

Notes can hold images, videos, PDFs and audio files, and math expressions and diagrams are created inside the app.

  7. 7

Sync through a service you choose

Notes synchronize through Joplin Cloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud, WebDAV, S3 or the local file system, and switching from one service to another is supported.

  8. 8

    Refunds: no set window

The apps are free, so this is all about Joplin Cloud, and Joplin's answer on refunds is unusually blunt: use the 14-day trial, because after that no money comes back and there will be no exception. It still earns a C rather than worse, because you cancel yourself from your profile, the plan runs to the end of the cycle you paid for and the help page tells you all of this before you hand over a card.

  9. 9

    A 3.6 GPA, above 144 of 147

That is against the other note-taking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  10. 10

    Keep it

The plain part of Joplin you could make: notes, Markdown and web clipper. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card

Best for free, open source notes synced your own way

Joplin is a free, open source notes app where you decide where your notes live: you write in Markdown or rich text and sync through your own Dropbox, OneDrive or Nextcloud. The trade is that you set up sync yourself, encryption stays off until you turn it on, a lost encryption password can't be recovered, and the iPhone app sits at 4.1. The web app and notebook sharing need Joplin Cloud, priced in euros.

ToolGPA report cardJoplinGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAThe apps are free and open source and sync through storage you already pay for, in a category whose middle plan is $6 a month. If you want Joplin to host it, Cloud Basic is 2.40€ a month billed yearly, and students and teachers get half off.
Free plan and trialAFree outright: the desktop, mobile and terminal apps, with no cap on notes, syncing through your own Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud, WebDAV or S3. Joplin Cloud is optional, and only the browser web app, publishing and shared notebooks need it.
FeaturesAMarkdown or rich text, notebooks, tags, full-text search everywhere, images, PDFs, audio, math, diagrams, a web clipper, optional end-to-end encryption, plugins, and Evernote exports that import with their attachments. And it does what rivals don't: you pick the storage it syncs to, and you can switch later.
Ease of useC4.1 from about 480 App Store ratings, squarely in C territory. You also choose and connect a sync service yourself, encryption stays off until you turn it on on one device, and a forgotten encryption password can't be recovered.
Platforms and integrationsAWindows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, Android, a terminal app and clippers for Chrome and Firefox, plus Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud, WebDAV, S3 and an extension API. The browser web app is the one piece that comes only with Joplin Cloud.
Grade point averageExcellent, out of 4.03.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Joplin is for

  • Fits if you want your notes in open source apps and on storage you control
  • Works for people leaving Evernote, as its export files come in with formatting and attachments

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want sync that works the minute you install, because you connect a storage service yourself
  • Not for you if you'd forget a password, since encryption is off by default and a lost encryption password can't be recovered
  • Tight if you want to share notebooks, as Cloud Basic can only join them and sharing or Email to Note needs Pro at 5.99€ a month
  • Watch out: Cloud prices are in euros, Teams needs at least 2 users, and the web app and Cloud AI need a Cloud plan
  • Watch out: the iPhone app sits at 4.1 from about 480 App Store ratings

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want open source notes synced through their own storage
  • Privacy-minded users who want end-to-end encrypted sync
  • Leaving Evernote: its export files import with formatting and attachments
  • Markdown writers who work across Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile

Worth knowing

  • End-to-end encryption is not on by default, and a forgotten encryption password cannot be recovered.
  • Joplin Cloud and Joplin Server Business prices are listed in euros.
  • On Joplin Cloud Basic you can join a shared notebook but not share your own; that and Email to Note need Pro.
  • The browser-based web app and Joplin Cloud AI (beta) are available only with a Joplin Cloud subscription.

144/147

Other note-taking apps it is graded above

Joplin's GPA of 3.6 is higher than 144 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade, and level with 2.

It stands best on features (A, above 135 of 147) and worst on ease of use (C, above 5).

Its paid plans start at about $2.69 a month, against a middle price of $5.83 for the category: 17 of the 66 others that charge start lower.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 3.3 out of 4. 3 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Joplin you could make: notes, Markdown and web clipper. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.6 is higher than 144 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade. It costs $32.27 a year. Joplin is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could make

  • Notes, Markdown and web clipper: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Dropbox, OneDrive and Nextcloud among them.
  • End-to-end encryption done properly.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
  • The depth: we grade its features A, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Joplin’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

Part 05 · Refunds

Getting your money back, getting out, and getting help

What happens once you have paid: whether you can get your money back, how to leave, and how to reach a person when something goes wrong. Each is graded from Joplin’s own terms and help pages.

Refunds and cancelling

CGrade

Ordinary · checked Oct 18, 2026

The apps are free, so this is all about Joplin Cloud, and Joplin's answer on refunds is unusually blunt: use the 14-day trial, because after that no money comes back and there will be no exception. It still earns a C rather than worse, because you cancel yourself from your profile, the plan runs to the end of the cycle you paid for and the help page tells you all of this before you hand over a card.

How you cancel
Yourself, in settings
Getting your money back

The Joplin Cloud help page says a 14-day trial starts the subscription so you can evaluate the service, and that cancelling in that window means no charge. After it, billing starts and it says it will not be possible to issue a refund, with no exception. It recommends starting monthly if you are unsure, because the yearly discount assumes a year's commitment.

Stated on joplincloud.com
How to cancel Joplin

You open your Joplin Cloud profile, scroll down and click Manage subscription, which cancels the subscription so you are not charged for what would have been the next period. The help page says Joplin does not cancel accounts by email because it cannot verify who is asking, though it will help if something goes wrong. Cancellation takes effect from the next billing cycle.

  1. Open your profile from the button in the top right corner of Joplin Cloud
  2. Scroll down and click Manage subscription
Stated on joplincloud.com
What you keep afterwards

The help page says a disabled account, which is one whose subscription has been cancelled by the user or automatically, is deleted 99 days later, and that deletion removes all notes, notebooks, tags and attachments permanently. Joplin will not delete data on request: to clear it sooner you delete the notes in the app and synchronise.

Stated on joplincloud.com
Renewals

The help page's billing section says a renewal issues an invoice, that cancelling afterwards does not cancel that invoice, and that payment reminders will follow. It promises one reminder of its own: an email before the 14-day trial ends. Nothing on the pages read says a reminder is sent before a yearly renewal, and the page suggests setting your own reminder at 14 days.

Stated on joplincloud.com

In your favour

  • The Joplin apps themselves are free and open source: only the cloud sync is paid for.
  • A 14-day trial comes first, and Joplin emails you before it ends.
  • You cancel from your own profile in two clicks, with nobody to write to.
  • The no-refund rule is stated plainly in the help pages, not buried in terms.

Watch out for

  • After the trial there are no refunds at all, and Joplin says there will be no exception.
  • A yearly plan is a year's commitment, so Joplin itself suggests starting monthly.
  • An invoice already issued stays due even after you cancel.
  • Once the account is disabled, everything in it is deleted 99 days later.

Customer support

CGrade

Ordinary · checked Oct 18, 2026

This is support the open-source way: thorough documentation, a busy forum and a public issue tracker, and that is most of what you get. Priority support is ticked only for Teams and Joplin Server Business, so a Basic or Pro subscriber joins the same queue as everyone else. No hours, no reply time, no chat, no phone. Ordinary for a project like this, so a C.

Ways to get help

  • Email

The plans FAQ asks you to write in for an education or bulk discount, and the Cloud help page says to contact Joplin if you need more storage than the cap. The address is published as an image rather than a link, so there is no form to fill in.

    Stated on joplinapp.org
  • Help centre

Two sets of written documentation: the Joplin help site covering installation, syncing, encryption and the apps, and a Joplin Cloud help page covering accounts, billing, cancelling and data retention.

    Stated on joplinapp.org
  • Community or forum

The Joplin support forum, linked from the Joplin Cloud help page as further information, where users and the project's developers answer questions. A public GitHub repository takes bug reports as well.

What depends on your plan

The feature comparison table marks priority support with a dash for Basic, Pro and Pro 100 GB, and with a tick for Teams and for Joplin Server Business. The page does not say what priority means in practice, or what support the other plans get.

Stated on joplinapp.org

In your favour

  • The documentation is detailed and the billing pages answer the hard questions directly.
  • The support forum is public and the developers take part in it.
  • Bugs can be filed in the open on the project's GitHub repository.

Watch out for

  • Priority support is only ticked for Teams and Joplin Server Business.
  • No hours and no reply time are stated anywhere we could read.
  • There is no chat and no phone line, and the contact address is published as an image.
  • Joplin will not cancel an account by email, so you must be able to sign in to leave.

What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: the Joplin Cloud help page with its billing, cancellation policy and data retention sections, the Joplin Cloud terms and conditions, the Joplin Cloud plans page with its feature comparison and FAQ, the Joplin help documentation and the Joplin support forum. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
