Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 19 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade
Journey is a journal and diary app from Two App Studio for Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Linux and the web. Entries combine formatted text with photos, video and audio, and can be browsed on a calendar, on a map or as throwbacks to past dates. Journals sync through Google Drive or Journey Cloud Sync, which has optional end-to-end encryption. It is sold as a free version, a one-time Premium license for a single platform, and a Membership that unlocks every platform.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Journey, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Coach programs and prompt templates give you a way in.
- 1
Best for a journal on every platform, Linux included
Journey runs on Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Linux and the web, maps entries by place, and has guided programs, templates and an AI you can ask about past entries.
- 2
Paid plans start at $4.17 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $17.99 one-time per platform, or $49.99 per year for Membership.
- 3
There is a free plan
Free version with no time limit: Google Drive sync, or 70MB and 60 entries on Journey Cloud Sync, limited photo uploads and 10 Odyssey AI questions a day. No desktop app, audio or video.
- 4
It runs on 6 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.
- 5
Multimedia entries
Entries hold photos, videos and audio, with formatting such as tables, checklists and text color. The free version limits photo uploads and has no audio, video or text formatting.
- 6
Atlas, calendar and Throwback
Atlas maps entries and media by tagged location, the calendar shows entries by date, and Throwback resurfaces entries from a week, a month or years ago.
- 7
Sync and end-to-end encryption
Journals sync through Google Drive or Journey Cloud Sync. Journey Cloud Sync has optional end-to-end encryption with a passphrase the company does not store, and a Docker image for a self-hosted sync drive is offered.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 19 of 35
That is against the other journaling apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
The plain part of Journey you could make: daily notes, mood tracking and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 7 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card
Best for a journal on every platform, Linux included
Journey runs on Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Linux and the web, maps entries by place, and has guided programs, templates and an AI you can ask about past entries. But the $17.99 one-time Premium covers only the phone platform you bought it on, desktop and web need the $49.99-a-year Membership, and turning on encryption switches off search for good.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Membership is $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year, which is $4.17 a month, exactly the middle for journaling apps here, and it's the only licence that covers desktop and web. Premium at $17.99 once covers one mobile platform only, and Lifetime Membership is $199. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free never runs out and syncs through your own Google Drive, but the caps come fast: 70MB and 60 entries on Journey Cloud Sync, limited photo uploads, 10 Odyssey AI questions a day, and no desktop app, audio, video or text formatting. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole job: photos, video and audio in entries, tables and checklists, a calendar, an Atlas map, Throwback, 60-plus coach programs, shared journals and entries by email. Two gaps on its own pages: turning encryption on kills search for good, and Membership stops at 10GB and 5,000 entries. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.65 from about 5,100 App Store ratings, below the top band. Coach programs and prompt templates give you a way in. What takes thought is the buying: Premium, Membership, Lifetime and a separate Signature plan all cover different things. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Linux and the web, which is the lot, and few rivals here manage Linux. It connects to Google Drive, Zapier, WhatsApp, Apple Health, WordPress and Siri Shortcuts, and there's a Docker image for hosting the sync drive yourself. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Journey is for
- Fits if you want one journal on your phone, your desktop and the web, Linux included
- Works for travel journals, since entries are tagged by place and shown on a map
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're staying free on Journey Cloud Sync, which stops at 70MB and 60 entries
- Skip it if you want to pay once on desktop, as the $17.99 Premium doesn't cover the desktop or web apps
- Not for you if you need encrypted entries you can still search, since encryption turns search off for good
- Tight if you're staying free, as there's no desktop app, audio, video or formatting, and AI stops at 10 questions a day
- Watch out: Membership stops at 10GB and 5,000 entries, and the Signature plan above it has no public price
Good to know
Good for
- People who want one journal on phone, desktop (including Linux) and web
- Travel journals, with entries tagged by place and shown on a map
- Guided journaling through coach programs and templates
- Buyers who would rather pay once than subscribe
Worth knowing
- The free version has no desktop app access and caps Journey Cloud Sync at 70MB and 60 entries.
- A Premium license covers a single platform; the help center says the Journey Desktop and web apps do not support it.
- Turning on end-to-end encryption disables search, and the vendor says it cannot be reversed.
- Membership stops at 10GB and 5,000 entries; more needs the separate Signature subscription, whose price is not shown publicly.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Journey you could make: daily notes, mood tracking and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 7 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $49.99 a year.
What you could make
- Daily notes, mood tracking and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, Google Drive, Zapier and WhatsApp among them.
- End-to-end encryption done properly.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- People on the other end: coaches. No app builder makes those.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Journey’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
