Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 48 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade

jtx Board is an open-source Android app that keeps journals, notes and tasks together and lets them be linked, for example tasks attached to meeting minutes. Entries follow the iCalendar standard (VJOURNAL and VTODO), are stored on the device and can sync with a CalDAV server of the user's choice through the separate DAVx5 app. The Google Play version is free with a paid Pro upgrade, and an open-source edition is published on F-Droid.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about jtx Board, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for tasks and journals synced to your own CalDAV server

jtx Board keeps journals, notes and tasks in one Android app and lets you link them, all stored in the standard iCalendar format.

  2. 2

    What it costs

Paid plans start at $0.99 to $3.49 per item, in-app purchase on Google Play (basis not shown).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

The standard version on Google Play is free for journals, notes and tasks kept on the device. The open-source edition on F-Droid is also free and shows a donations page in place of the in-app purchase.

  4. 4

    It runs on Android

    Android.

  5. 5

Journals, notes and tasks in one app

Journals hold dated entries such as meeting minutes or a diary, notes hold memos without a date, and tasks carry due dates, subtasks and a progress value.

  6. 6

    Linked entries

Tasks can be attached to a journal or a note, and any entry can take a comment or an audio comment, so follow-ups stay with the minutes they came from.

  7. 7

    iCalendar standard format

Journals and notes are stored as VJOURNAL components and tasks as VTODO components under RFC 5545, so other apps and servers that follow the standard can read them.

  8. 8

    A 2.6 GPA, above 48 of 123

That is against the other to-do list apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

The report card

Best for tasks and journals synced to your own CalDAV server

jtx Board keeps journals, notes and tasks in one Android app and lets you link them, all stored in the standard iCalendar format. It's Android only, and sync means installing a second app, DAVx5, plus a server that accepts journals, which rules out iCloud, Posteo, Ionos and Infomaniak. On the Play version, editing synced entries needs Pro, and Google Play doesn't say what Pro costs beyond $0.99 to $3.49.

ToolGPA report cardjtx BoardGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAThe F-Droid build costs nothing at all, and on Google Play the Pro unlock is an in-app purchase listed between $0.99 and $3.49, which the app's code treats as a one-off. A year on this category's middle subscription is nearer $48.
Free plan and trialAThe open-source edition on F-Droid is free outright, with a donations page where the in-app purchase would be, and the Play version is free for journals, notes and tasks on the phone. On Play, editing entries in a synced collection is the one thing held back for Pro.
FeaturesCTasks take due dates, subtasks, a progress value, alarms, recurrence and a map location, and hang off journal entries. But the listing shows the gaps: no sync of its own, so you need DAVx5 and a server that accepts journals, and geofence alerts are in the Play build only.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and getting to the point of the app means homework: install DAVx5 as well, find a CalDAV server that accepts VJOURNAL, and check the compatibility list, which rules out iCloud, Posteo, Ionos and Infomaniak.
Platforms and integrationsDOne operating system: Android. The vendor's terms say that's the only platform, with no iPhone, desktop or web version listed. The CalDAV list, Nextcloud, ownCloud, Fastmail, Radicale, Baikal and GMX, is all it connects to.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who jtx Board is for

  • Fits if you already sync with Nextcloud, Fastmail or Radicale and want tasks and journals there too
  • Works for meeting minutes with the follow-up tasks attached to them

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you have an iPhone or want it on a computer, as it's Android only
  • Not for you if setting up DAVx5 and a CalDAV server sounds like homework
  • Watch out: the compatibility list marks iCloud, Posteo, Ionos and Infomaniak as not supporting journal sync
  • Tight if you stay on the free Google Play version, because editing synced entries is a Pro feature
  • Watch out: Google Play lists in-app purchases at $0.99 to $3.49 without naming them, so the Pro price isn't clear

Good to know

Good for

  • Android users who sync tasks with their own CalDAV server
  • Nextcloud, Fastmail or Radicale users who want journals too
  • Keeping meeting minutes and their follow-up tasks together

Worth knowing

  • Android only: the vendor's terms say the app is currently available on Android, and no iOS, desktop or web version is listed.
  • Sync needs the separate DAVx5 app and a server that accepts VJOURNAL; the compatibility list marks iCloud, Posteo, Ionos and Infomaniak as not supporting it.
  • In the Google Play version, editing entries in remote collections is part of the paid Pro upgrade.
  • Google Play lists in-app purchases at $0.99 to $3.49 per item without naming them, so the exact Pro price is not shown; the app's code treats Pro as a one-time purchase.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.

You could make the core of jtx Board for yourself: tasks, notes and daily notes. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. jtx Board is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could make

  • Tasks, notes and daily notes: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, DAVx5, kSync and Nextcloud among them.

What this rests on. jtx Board’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
