Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 11 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade
Kapwing is a browser-based video editor aimed at marketing, training and social media teams. Projects are edited on a drag-and-drop timeline and saved to a cloud workspace that teammates can open, comment on and edit together. AI tools for subtitles, translation, dubbing, text to speech and video generation draw on a monthly allowance of credits that grows with the plan.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Kapwing, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for teams editing video together in a browser
There's no trial of the paid plans, Kapwing says it doesn't refund subscriptions, and there's no app to download.
- 2
Paid plans start at $16 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $16 per member / month, billed annually ($24 billed monthly).
- 3
There is a free plan
Unlimited watermarked exports up to 4 minutes long at 720p, 30 minutes of exports a month, 5 GB of cloud storage and 10 credits, enough for 10 minutes of auto-subtitling.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Timeline video editor
Trim and combine clips on a drag-and-drop timeline, add overlays, transitions and stock assets, then export as MP4, GIF, MP3 or an image.
- 6
Subtitles and translation
Subtitles are generated automatically and can be translated into more than 60 languages or downloaded as SRT or VTT files. Minutes are metered: 10 on Free, 1,000 a month on Pro.
- 7
Dubbing, text to speech and lip sync
Dubbing translates dialogue into 40+ languages and text to speech turns text layers into voiceovers. Custom voice clones are listed under the Business plan, and lip sync minutes are metered by plan.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 11 of 52
That is against the other screen recording and video tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Kapwing you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for teams editing video together in a browser
Kapwing is a browser video editor for teams, where everyone opens the same project, comments and edits together, with subtitles, translation and dubbing built in. The free plan watermarks everything, stops at 4 minutes and 720p, and drops project files after 3 days. There's no trial of the paid plans, Kapwing says it doesn't refund subscriptions, and there's no app to download.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $16 a member a month on the year, $24 if you pay by the month. The middle of this category is $10, so Kapwing sits in the upper half of the normal range. Business at $50 is a different conversation. |
| Free plan and trial | C | There is a free plan, but you'll hit the walls in an afternoon: every export is watermarked and capped at 4 minutes and 720p, with 30 minutes of exports a month and 10 credits. Free project files are dropped after 3 days. |
| Features | B | Timeline editing, auto subtitles translated into 60+ languages, dubbing into 40+, text to speech, AI video generation, a tool that cuts long videos into social clips, and screen recording in the same tab. Nothing missing from the core job. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and this is a browser app where the work is the editing itself: a timeline to learn and a monthly credit allowance to keep an eye on. Not hard, just not nothing. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web only, nothing to download, and the help centre says the Android app is paused so phone users edit in a browser. It does talk to YouTube, TikTok and Unsplash, which keeps it above web-with-nothing. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Kapwing is for
- Fits if your marketing or social team edits video together in a browser
- Works for subtitling, translating or dubbing a video into other languages
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to try the paid plans first, as there's no trial and Kapwing says it doesn't refund
- Tight if you're staying free, because exports are watermarked and stop at 4 minutes and 720p
- Pricey if you want custom voice clones, since those are listed under Business at $50 per member a month
- Watch out: free project files are kept for 3 days, and free projects are unlisted rather than private
- Not for you if you want a desktop or phone app, as it's browser only and the Android app is paused

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Kapwing you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 25 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools grade higher. It costs $192 a year.
What you could make
- Templates: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A video editor.
- Audio cleaned up live as you speak.
- Speech turned into text you can trust.
- Recording the screen with its sound, and somewhere to keep the video.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Kapwing’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
