Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 36 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade
KeepingYouAwake is a small open-source menu bar utility that prevents a Mac from entering sleep mode, either for a preset duration or for as long as it is switched on. It is a wrapper around caffeinate, the command line tool Apple ships with macOS, and it can turn itself off when the battery level is low. Its developer, Marcel Dierkes, built it in 2014 as a replacement for the Caffeine app and publishes it under the MIT license.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about KeepingYouAwake, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It only wraps Apple's own caffeinate tool, comes with no guarantee from the developer, and won't keep a MacBook awake with the lid closed.

The report card
Best for keeping a Mac awake with one click
KeepingYouAwake is a free, open-source menu bar switch that keeps a Mac awake for a set time or until you turn it off. It only wraps Apple's own caffeinate tool, comes with no guarantee from the developer, and won't keep a MacBook awake with the lid closed. It's Mac only, and the changelog says the next release drops everything before macOS 12.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free and open source under the MIT licence, a download anyone can run. Its pages show no price, no purchase step and no paid edition. |
| Free plan and trial | A | The complete utility, every setting included, is a free download with no account or licence key. You can install it with Homebrew too. |
| Features | D | This is one switch. It wraps caffeinate, the sleep-blocking tool Apple already ships, and adds timed durations, a low-battery cut-off and a URL scheme for scripts. It won't even hold a MacBook awake with the lid shut. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there is genuinely nothing to set up: click the menu bar icon and your Mac stays awake. The rest is a handful of settings you may never open. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Mac only. Version 1.6.8 supports macOS 10.13 and newer, and the changelog says 1.6.9 will raise that to macOS 12. No integrations are listed beyond its own URL scheme. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who KeepingYouAwake is for
- Fits if sleep keeps cutting off a long download or a slideshow
- Works for anyone who wants Apple's caffeinate behind a menu bar icon, at no cost
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a MacBook to stay awake with the lid closed, which it doesn't do
- Not for you if you're on Windows or Linux, as it's macOS only
- Tight if your Mac runs something older than macOS 12, which the changelog says version 1.6.9 will stop supporting
- Too light for more than stopping sleep: it wraps Apple's caffeinate, and the developer says you use it at your own risk
Good to know
Good for
- Mac users who need the computer to stay awake for a set time
- People who used Caffeine and want a maintained replacement
- Anyone who wants a small single-purpose utility at no cost
Worth knowing
- macOS only. Version 1.6.8 supports macOS 10.13 and newer, and the changelog says the next release, 1.6.9, raises the minimum to macOS 12.
- It does not keep a MacBook awake with the lid closed: it works on desktop Macs and on portable Macs with an open lid.
- It only prevents sleep, by wrapping Apple's caffeinate tool; the developer says it is provided with no guarantee and used at your own risk.
