Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 72 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Kilonotes is a handwriting notes app for iPad, iPhone and Android tablets aimed at students, made by Hefei Top-Stack Information Technology. It combines stylus handwriting, PDF annotation and audio recording with AI that summarizes material and builds outlines, mind maps and practice questions. It is free to download with 5 notebooks, and memberships, AI credits and cloud space are sold as in-app purchases.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Kilonotes, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for student notes with AI revision tools on a tablet

The report card

Best for student notes with AI revision tools on a tablet

Kilonotes is a handwriting app for students on iPad and Android tablets: write with a stylus, record the lecture, then have AI turn it into a summary, a mind map or practice questions. Paid access is $9.99 a year or $19.99 once. But the free version stops at 5 notebooks and shows ads, AI past the trial means buying credits, and the website lists its plans with no prices, so it's hard to tell what each in-app purchase buys.

ToolGPA report cardKilonotesGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyA$1.99 a month, $9.99 a year or $19.99 once for Lifetime Access on the US App Store, against a category sitting around $6 a month in the middle. A whole year for less than two months of that is the top mark. AI credits and cloud space are sold on top.
Free plan and trialCFree to download, but it stops at 5 notebooks and a handful of trial goes at the AI, and the App Store listing says the app contains advertising. Once the trial uses are spent, more AI means buying credits.
FeaturesBLow-latency ink with Apple Pencil and S Pen, handwriting turned into searchable text, markup on PDF, PowerPoint and Word, lecture recording, and AI that builds summaries, outlines, mind maps, flashcards and quizzes. Nothing's missing from the handwriting-notes job; it's the AI that's rationed by credits.
Ease of useB4.6 from about 5,000 App Store ratings, a touch under the 4.7 an A asks for. The shop is the muddled part: the site names Free, Premium and AI Member with no prices, and the store's subscriptions don't say which plan they are.
Platforms and integrationsCiPad, iPhone and Android tablets, so tablets and phones and nothing else. No Windows or web app, on a Mac it runs as the iPad app the App Store marks as not verified, and no integrations are listed.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Kilonotes is for

  • Fits if you take handwritten lecture notes on an iPad or Android tablet
  • Works for students who want practice questions and summaries made from their own notes

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free, because it stops at 5 notebooks and shows ads
  • Pricey if you lean on the AI, since credits are bought separately once the trial uses run out
  • Skip it if you need your notes on a Windows PC or in a browser, as there's no app for either, and on a Mac it runs an unverified iPad app
  • Watch out: the website names Free, Premium and AI Member with no prices, and the store subscriptions don't say which plan they are
  • Watch out: Google Play shows only a $0.49 to $24.99 range per item, so Android prices may differ from the App Store's

Good to know

Good for

  • Students taking handwritten lecture notes on an iPad or Android tablet
  • Annotating lecture slides and PDFs with a stylus
  • People who want AI summaries and practice questions built from their notes

Worth knowing

  • The free version stops at 5 notebooks, and AI use beyond the trial allowance requires buying AI credits.
  • The website names Free, Premium and AI Member plans without prices; prices appear only as in-app purchases in the app stores.
  • No Windows or web app is offered. On a Mac it runs as the iPad app, which the App Store marks as not verified for macOS.
  • Google Play's US listing shows only a range of $0.49 to $24.99 per item, so Android prices may differ from the App Store's.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Kilonotes you could make: notes and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $23.88 a year.

What you could make

  • Notes and templates: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Speech turned into text you can trust.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • Hooks into the device itself: Apple Pencil and handwriting.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Kilonotes’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
