Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 129 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Linwood Butterfly is a free, open-source app for handwritten notes, sketches and PDF markup on an infinite canvas. It accepts stylus, touch or mouse input, keeps documents on the device by default and can sync them through a WebDAV service such as Nextcloud. It runs on Android, Windows, macOS, Linux and in a browser, and an iOS preview build is offered for sideloading.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Linwood Butterfly, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Install it, or just open the web app, and start drawing.

The report card

Best for free handwritten notes on an endless canvas

Butterfly is a free, open-source app for handwriting, sketching and marking up PDFs on an endless canvas, on Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and the web. But iOS is only a preview you have to sideload, sync means bringing your own WebDAV service and isn't in the web version, collaboration sits behind an experiment flag, and the web app wants a Chromium browser. Skip it if you write on an iPad.

ToolGPA report cardLinwood ButterflyGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree and open source under the GNU AGPL-3.0 on every platform, in a category whose middle plan is $6 a month. The project's own comparison table lists its cost as Free, and there's no paid plan anywhere.
Free plan and trialAThe whole app is free on Android, Windows, macOS, Linux and the web, with a Docker image if you want to host the web version yourself. Nothing is held back.
FeaturesCA drawing kit with pens that have adjustable smoothing and texture, shapes, tables, rulers, stamps, a laser pointer, templates, and imports from PDF, Xournal++ and OneNote. The gap the listing names is sync: WebDAV only, no hosted service, and not in the web version at all.
Ease of useBInstall it, or just open the web app, and start drawing. Notes save to a folder on your device with nothing to configure. No App Store rating is on record to go by.
Platforms and integrationsBAndroid, Windows, macOS, Linux and a browser, with Nextcloud over WebDAV. iOS is a preview only, an unsigned build you sideload with AltStore or Sideloadly, and the web app wants a Chromium browser, so it's short of the full set.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Linwood Butterfly is for

  • Fits if you take notes by hand with a stylus on Android or a laptop and mark up PDFs
  • Works for people who already run Nextcloud and want their notes synced over WebDAV

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you write on an iPad, as iOS is a sideloaded preview and not on the App Store
  • Not for you if you want sync without setting anything up, because there's no hosted sync service, only WebDAV
  • Too light for teams drawing together, since collaboration is experimental and sits behind a flag
  • Watch out: the web app has no remote storage, and the docs say Firefox and Safari lack features it uses

Good to know

Good for

  • Handwritten lecture notes and PDF markup with a stylus
  • People who want a free, AGPL-licensed note app on Android and desktop
  • Nextcloud users who want their notes synced over WebDAV

Worth knowing

  • iOS is a preview only: an unsigned IPA that has to be sideloaded with AltStore or Sideloadly, and it is not on the App Store.
  • There is no hosted sync service. Remote storage supports only WebDAV, and it is not available in the web version.
  • Collaboration is experimental and has to be switched on with an experiment flag.
  • The web app performs better in Chromium-based browsers; the docs say Firefox and Safari lack the WebAssembly features it uses.

Part 04 · Standing

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

129/147

Other note-taking apps it is graded above

Linwood Butterfly's GPA of 3.2 is higher than 129 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade, and level with 8.

It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 100 of 147) and worst on features (C, above 2).

Linwood Butterfly has no paid plan.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.7 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Linwood Butterfly is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces. It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 129 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade.

What you could make

  • Notes and templates: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • An endless canvas that stays smooth with hundreds of things on it.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • Hooks into the device itself: handwriting.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.

What this rests on. Linwood Butterfly’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
