Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 12 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

LiquidText is a document review app for iPad, Mac and Windows that places source documents and a notes workspace side by side. Excerpts dragged out of a document stay linked to where they came from, a pinch gesture pulls distant pages or search results together, and notes can be connected into a mind map. The Basic version is free; multi-document projects, inking and cloud sync need a paid version.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about LiquidText, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The gestures are its own, so there's a bit to pick up, and choosing between a one-time Pro, three LIVE tiers and Enterprise takes thought.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for picking long documents apart

LiquidText is a reading tool for long documents more than a notebook: drag a passage out of a contract or a paper and it stays linked to its page, and a pinch brings two distant pages together.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $8.99 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $8.99 per month, paid annually (LIVE).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Basic: free PDF reading, annotation, excerpts linked to notes, pinch search and highlight view, mind maps and notes export. Multi-document projects, inking and tagging need Pro.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    iOS, macOS and Windows.

  5. 5

    Unified workspace

Source documents and notes share one screen. Excerpts dragged out of a document stay linked to their original location and return to it with one tap.

  6. 6

    Pinch to compare and search

A pinch gesture collapses a document so distant pages, search results or highlights sit together, with as much surrounding context as needed.

  7. 7

    Ink links and freehand notes

Pro adds freehand inking anywhere and live links drawn as a line between any two objects, such as a page, an excerpt and a comment.

  8. 8

    A 2.2 GPA, above 12 of 147

That is against the other note-taking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace LiquidText you would be making a library of papers and sources to search. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for picking long documents apart

LiquidText is a reading tool for long documents more than a notebook: drag a passage out of a contract or a paper and it stays linked to its page, and a pinch brings two distant pages together. The free version keeps you to one document per project with no inking, tagging or OCR, sync costs $8.99 a month paid annually for 1 GB, and the one-time Pro covers a single platform. There's no iPhone, Android or web app.

ToolGPA report cardLiquidTextGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDLIVE is $8.99 a month paid annually, or $10.99 monthly, where notes apps here sit at $6 in the middle and $8.25 in the dearer quarter, and that buys 1 GB of storage and one colleague. The one-time route, Pro 2023 at $89.99, covers a single platform and doesn't sync.
Free plan and trialCBasic is free with PDF annotation, excerpts linked back to the page, pinch search, mind maps and notes export. The caps come quickly, though, since projects with several documents, inking, tagging and OCR all need a paid version.
FeaturesCExcerpts stay tied to their source, a pinch collapses a document so far-apart pages sit together, Pro projects hold any number of documents with up to 3 side by side, and Zotero and Mendeley plug in. It does document review fully, and that's a narrower job than note-taking.
Ease of useB4.62 from about 6,400 App Store ratings, just shy of the 4.7 an A asks for. The gestures are its own, so there's a bit to pick up, and choosing between a one-time Pro, three LIVE tiers and Enterprise takes thought.
Platforms and integrationsBiPad, Mac and Windows, with Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, iCloud, iManage, Zotero and Mendeley hooked up. No iPhone, no Android and no web version, and working across platforms needs LIVE, since Pro 2023 is licensed for one.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who LiquidText is for

  • Fits if you're a lawyer or analyst working through long documents on an iPad, Mac or Windows PC
  • Works for comparing passages across several papers and jumping back to the source

Who it is not for

  • Pricey if you want sync, at $8.99 a month paid annually with 1 GB of storage and one colleague
  • Tight if you're staying free, because several documents in one project, inking, tagging and OCR need a paid version
  • Skip it if you just want somewhere to jot notes, as it's built around reading documents
  • Not for you if you use an iPhone, Android or a browser, since the apps cover iPad, Mac and Windows only
  • Watch out: the $89.99 Pro 2023 covers one platform with no sync, Enterprise has no published price, and the trial is one week

Good to know

Good for

  • Lawyers and analysts reviewing long documents
  • Researchers comparing passages across several papers
  • Pen-and-tablet users who want notes tied back to their sources

Worth knowing

  • The apps cover iPadOS, macOS and Windows only.
  • The free Basic version leaves out multi-document projects, inking, tagging and OCR.
  • Pro 2023 is licensed for one platform; syncing between devices or working across operating systems needs a LIVE subscription.
  • LIVE includes 1 GB of storage and sharing with one colleague; more of either needs an Unlimited tier.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace LiquidText you would be making a library of papers and sources to search. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 126 of the 147 other note-taking apps grade higher. It costs $107.88 a year.

What you could make

  • Notes, highlights and mind mapping: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A library of papers and sources to search.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • Several people working in it at the same moment.
  • It plugs into other products, Zotero, Mendeley and Dropbox among them.

What this rests on. LiquidText’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
