Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 6 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade

Logically, formerly Afforai, is a research and writing workspace. It combines a reference manager, a file annotator, a document writer and an AI research assistant that answers with inline citations from your own files, from a Semantic Scholar database of 200 million papers or from Google search. Citations come in more than 10,000 styles, and a Chrome extension and a Microsoft Word add-in bring the library into the browser and into Word.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Logically, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Citation details do fill themselves in when you add a PDF or a DOI.

The report card

Best for references, notes and drafts in one place

Logically, which used to be called Afforai, puts your references, PDF notes and drafts in one workspace, with an AI assistant that cites as it answers. The free plan allows 5 AI chat messages a day, a 2-entry bibliography, 100 MB of storage and watermarked PDF exports. Unlimited is $12 a user a month only if you pay yearly, $30 monthly, and there's no phone or desktop app.

ToolGPA report cardLogicallyGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCUnlimited is $12 a user a month billed yearly, which is bang on the middle of what this category charges. Pay monthly and it's $30, more than double. It does mean unlimited AI chat, commands and storage plus the advanced models, and students with a university email get another 50% off the first year.
Free plan and trialCEvery product is in the free plan. The day's allowance is small: 5 AI chat messages, 5 AI commands and 5 autosuggestions, with 100 MB of storage. Add a watermark on PDF export and an automatic bibliography that stops at 2 entries and you'll be upgrading inside a week.
FeaturesBA reference manager, a PDF annotator, a document writer and an AI assistant that answers with inline citations from your own files, from 200 million Semantic Scholar papers or from Google search, in more than 10,000 citation styles. Finding, reading and writing all sit here, so the whole job is covered.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and there's more to get going than a search box: a library to fill, references to bring over from Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote, and four products to find your way around. Citation details do fill themselves in when you add a PDF or a DOI.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, a Chrome extension and a free Word add-in that works in Word on the web and in Microsoft 365 on Mac and Windows. That add-in is what lifts it off plain web-only. No phone or desktop app is mentioned.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Logically is for

  • Works for people who write in Microsoft Word and want citations dropped in from their library

Who it is not for

  • Pricey if you pay monthly, at $30 a user against $12 on the yearly plan
  • Tight if you're staying free, with 5 AI chat messages a day and a 2-entry automatic bibliography
  • Watch out: free files stop at 25 MB or 200 pages, PDF exports carry a watermark, and advanced AI models are paid only
  • Not for you if you read papers on a phone or tablet, as no mobile or desktop app is mentioned

Part 04 · Standing

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

6/27

Other AI research tools it is graded above

Logically's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 6 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade, and level with 8.

It stands best on features (B, above 15 of 27) and worst on ease of use (C, above 0).

Its paid plans start at $12 a month for each person, against a middle price of $10 for the category: 13 of the 20 others that charge start lower.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.7 out of 4. 3 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Logically you would be making a library of papers and sources to search. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 13 of the 27 other AI research tools grade higher. It costs $144 a year.

What you could make

  • Long-form writing and highlights: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A library of papers and sources to search.
  • An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
  • A search engine with an AI model behind it.
  • Citation records for millions of papers.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, Microsoft Word, Semantic Scholar and Google Search among them.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Logically’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
