Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 18 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade
Mac Mouse Fix is a macOS app that gives an ordinary third-party mouse the gestures of an Apple trackpad. Holding a side button while dragging or scrolling opens Mission Control, switches desktops, zooms or scrolls in any direction, and the scroll wheel gets momentum-based smoothing. Version 3 is free for 30 days of use and then costs $2.99 once; the source code is published on GitHub by its developer, Noah Nuebling.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Mac Mouse Fix, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: install it, pick what each button does and how smooth the scrolling should be.

The report card
Best for trackpad gestures on an ordinary mouse
Mac Mouse Fix makes an ordinary mouse act more like an Apple trackpad, with side-button drags for Mission Control and smoother scrolling. It's $2.99 once after 30 days of use. The gestures need a mouse with at least 5 buttons, the Magic Mouse isn't supported, some Logitech-style mice hide buttons from it, and the source license isn't a standard open-source one. It's Mac only, on macOS 11 or later.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | $2.99 once, plus local taxes, no subscription. Utilities here sit at $2.99 a month in the middle, so this is one month's money for keeps, and the licence syncs to your other Macs through iCloud. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan for version 3. You get 30 free days with no card asked for, and a day only counts when you actually use the app. Macs on macOS 10.13 to 10.15 need Mac Mouse Fix 2, which the developer says stays free. |
| Features | C | Giving a third-party mouse trackpad manners is its one job, and it covers it: side-button drags for Mission Control, desktops and App Exposé, drag-to-scroll with inertia, three smoothness settings, any button on any shortcut. On some mice built for Logitech Options it can't see every button. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: install it, pick what each button does and how smooth the scrolling should be. The mouse's scroll direction is set separately from the trackpad's. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Mac only. The latest version is made for macOS 11 Big Sur or later. No integrations are listed, and there's nothing for Windows or Linux. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Mac Mouse Fix is for
- Fits if you have a mouse with 5 or more buttons and want trackpad gestures on it
- Works for people whose wheel scrolling on a Mac feels jerky
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you use an Apple Magic Mouse, which isn't supported
- Not for you if your mouse has fewer than 5 buttons, since the trackpad gestures need them
- Watch out: on some mice built for drivers like Logitech Options, it can't recognize every button
- Not for you if you need a standard open-source license, as the source is under the developer's own MMF License
- Skip it if you're on Windows or Linux; Macs on macOS 10.13 to 10.15 are left on the older Mac Mouse Fix 2
Good to know
Good for
- Mac users with a five-button mouse who miss trackpad gestures
- People who find wheel scrolling on macOS jerky
- Buyers who want a low one-time price instead of a subscription
Worth knowing
- macOS only. The latest version is made for macOS 11 Big Sur or later; macOS 10.13 to 10.15 need Mac Mouse Fix 2, which the developer says stays free.
- The trackpad gestures as described need a mouse with at least 5 buttons, and the Apple Magic Mouse is not supported.
- On some mice built for proprietary drivers such as Logitech Options, the app cannot recognize every button.
- The source is under the developer's own MMF License, which restricts publishing compiled copies; it is not a standard open-source license.

Part 03 · Features
What it does
Its main features, where it runs, what it works with and who makes it
1
Place it runs: macOS
Trackpad-style gestures and smooth scrolling for third-party mice. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: open source, one-time purchase, keyboard and mouse remapping.
On some mice built for Logitech Options it can't see every button.
- Trackpad gestures from a side button
- Hold button 4 and drag up for Mission Control, sideways to move between desktops or down for App Exposé. A single click triggers Look up and Quick Look.
- Click and scroll
- Holding a button while turning the wheel shows the desktop, opens Launchpad or zooms in and out in apps such as Safari and Preview.
- Scroll and navigate by dragging
- Hold button 5 and drag to scroll in any direction with inertia, or drag sideways to go back and forward, as a two-finger swipe does on a trackpad.
- Smooth scrolling
- Three smoothness settings: High adds trackpad-like momentum and a bounce at the end of a page, Regular uses short animations, and Off scrolls a set number of lines per step.
- Scroll direction and modifiers
- The mouse's scroll direction is set independently of the trackpad or Magic Mouse, and holding a keyboard modifier while scrolling gives precise scrolling or zoom.
- Button actions and shortcuts
- Assign an action to a click, double click or click and drag of any button, including any keyboard shortcut, such as copy and paste or volume control.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Mac Mouse Fix you would be making keys and buttons remapped below the level of apps. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 59 of the 94 other desktop utilities grade higher. It costs $2.99, paid once. Mac Mouse Fix is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could not
- Keys and buttons remapped below the level of apps.
- A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
What this rests on. Mac Mouse Fix’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
