Mailchimp refunds and cancellation

BGrade

Good · checked Oct 18, 2026

Pay for a year and you have 60 days to ask for all of it back, no reason needed. Pay monthly and the terms say flatly that you get nothing back, short of Mailchimp choosing to be generous. Monthly customers can pause or delete the account themselves; annual ones are told to go through sales to close. Half of it is good, so a B.

Getting your money back

The terms say you are not entitled to a refund or credit under any circumstance on monthly Paid Marketing Plans, though Mailchimp may offer a refund, discount or credit at its sole discretion. Annual Paid Marketing Plans carry a 60-day money-back guarantee: a full refund of the annual subscription fee, requested through Mailchimp's billing contact form within 60 days of the purchase date.

How to cancel Mailchimp

A monthly plan can be paused, downgraded or ended by permanently deleting the account, all from your profile icon under Account, then Settings, then Manage my plan. The terms say an annual Paid Marketing Plan is closed by contacting sales instead, and that a paid plan may be downgraded to the Free plan only once over the life of an account.

  1. Back up your data first, as the article advises
  2. Click your profile icon and choose Account & billing, or Account, depending on your user type
  3. Click the Settings drop-down and choose Manage my plan
  4. Click Delete my account
  5. Read the suggestions offered, then click Continue to delete
  6. Confirm your password and enter DELETE in the confirmation fields
  7. Click Permanently delete

What you keep afterwards

Pausing stops billing for 3 or 6 months, keeps the data, and still lets you create and edit emails, view reports and manage your audience, but only twice in 12 months. Deleting is permanent and cannot be reversed: all data tied to audiences, campaign archives and reports is removed, and any outstanding balance must be paid first. A separate article covers exporting a backup.

Renewals

The terms say signing up for a Paid Marketing Plan means recurring monthly or annual billing from the day you sign up, charged on the same day each month or on the anniversary date, until you cancel. No reminder before a renewal is promised. Mailchimp may change its fees at any time by posting new prices or sending an email notification.

In your favour

  • Buy a year and you have 60 days to ask for every penny back, with no reason needed.
  • You can pause a monthly plan for 3 or 6 months instead of leaving, and keep your data.
  • Deleting the account is something you do yourself, in the plan settings.

  • The 60 days run from the purchase date, and you have to write in through the billing form to claim.
  • On an annual plan you can't close the account yourself. The terms send you to sales.
  • You get one downgrade from a paid plan to Free over the whole life of the account.

What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Mailchimp's standard terms of use, including its sections on paid marketing plans and refunds, its help articles on pausing or cancelling an account, on changing or pausing a plan and on its support options, and the help centre itself. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted Mailchimp's support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
