Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 9 of the 51 other email apps we grade
Mailstrom is a web-based inbox cleaning tool from 410 Labs that connects to an existing mailbox over IMAP. It groups messages into bundles by sender, subject, date or size so that hundreds or thousands can be deleted, archived or moved at once, and it adds unsubscribe, block and automatic rules to keep the inbox clear afterwards. It works with Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, AOL, iCloud and other providers that support IMAP.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Mailstrom, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for bulk-clearing an inbox you gave up on
Mailstrom bundles your mail by sender, subject, date or size, so you can delete or archive hundreds of messages in one go, then unsubscribe and block so they don't come back.
- 2
Paid plans start at $5 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $9 per month, or $59.95 per year (Basic, 1 email account).
- 3
You can try it first
Free trial, no credit card: a snapshot of up to 5,000 inbox messages, of which 25% can be deleted, archived or moved
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Bundles of related mail
Groups inbox messages by sender, subject, date and size so that tens, hundreds or thousands of them can be deleted, archived or moved to a folder in one action.
- 6
Unsubscribe
From the Mailing Lists tab, Unsubscribe sends a request email to the list owner. If the list gives no unsubscribe address, its web page opens in a new tab instead.
- 7
Block
Removes the selected messages and creates a rule that keeps future mail from the same sender, mailing list or subject out of the inbox. Available to subscribers.
- 8
A 2.2 GPA, above 9 of 51
That is against the other email apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Mailstrom you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for bulk-clearing an inbox you gave up on
Mailstrom bundles your mail by sender, subject, date or size, so you can delete or archive hundreds of messages in one go, then unsubscribe and block so they don't come back. Basic is $9 a month for 1 account and 10,000 emails. It runs in the browser only, the free trial lets you act on a quarter of a 5,000-message snapshot, it can only organize the inbox, and POP-only accounts can't connect.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Basic is $9 a month, the middle of this category, or $59.95 a year, about $5 a month. That covers 1 email account and up to 10,000 emails. A second mailbox or a bigger one means Plus at $14 a month, and Pro is $29.95. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. The trial needs no credit card, but it's a one-time snapshot of up to 5,000 inbox messages and only 25% of them can be deleted, archived or moved. Enough to see how it works, not enough to finish the job. |
| Features | C | It does its one job: bundles by sender, subject, date and size so thousands of messages move at once, with Unsubscribe, Block, Chill, Expire, saved move rules and an Undo for every command. That's a narrow slice of email, and the FAQ says folders other than the inbox can't be organized yet. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record. Bundles are simple to read and Undo reverses mistakes, but you start by connecting a mailbox over IMAP, and POP-only accounts or Exchange servers without IMAP can't be connected at all. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | The browser and nothing else: no phone or desktop app is listed. It connects to Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, AOL, iCloud, Microsoft 365 and other IMAP providers. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Mailstrom is for
- Fits if your inbox holds thousands of old messages you want to delete or archive in bulk
- Works for people who'd rather choose what goes themselves than leave it to AI sorting
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to tidy your other folders too, because only the inbox can be organized for now
- Tight if you're on Basic with a big mailbox, as it's capped at 1 email account and 10,000 emails
- Not for you if you want an app on your phone, since it runs in the browser only
- Watch out: the free trial is a one-off snapshot of 5,000 messages, and you can act on only 25% of them
- Skip it if your mail is POP-only or on Exchange without IMAP, as those can't be connected
Good to know
Good for
- Clearing thousands of old messages out of a neglected inbox
- People who want to choose what goes themselves instead of relying on AI sorting
- Cleaning several mailboxes: Pro covers 20 email accounts
Worth knowing
- It runs in the browser only; the site lists no mobile or desktop apps.
- The free trial is a one-time snapshot of up to 5,000 messages, and only 25% of them can be deleted, archived or moved.
- It works over IMAP, so POP-only accounts and Exchange servers without IMAP enabled cannot be connected.
- Basic is capped at 1 email account and 10,000 emails, and the FAQ says folders other than the inbox cannot be organized yet.

- Chill and Expire
- Chill takes messages out of the inbox and returns them on a date you choose. Expire removes mail from a sender or mailing list after a set period. Both need a subscription.
- Automatic move rules
- A move can be saved as a rule, so future messages that match a sender or subject are filed into the chosen folder as they arrive. Subscribers' mail is loaded continuously.
- Undo and task history
- Actions are carried out by your email service and are not permanent: deleted mail goes to its trash, and an Undo feature reverses any command from the task list.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Mailstrom you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 33 of the 51 other email apps grade higher. It costs $59.95 a year.
What you could not
- Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
- Filters that read every message as it arrives.
What this rests on. Mailstrom’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
