Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
3.2
GPA, above 12 of the 17 other file storage and sync services we grade
MEGA is a cloud storage service that encrypts files on the user's device, so that only the account owner and the people they authorize hold the keys. It includes sync and backup apps, file sharing, and encrypted chat and video calls. Paid plans run from 200 GB to 20 TB and bundle a VPN and a password manager, with prices set in euros.
To get you started, here are 10 things to know about MEGA, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Nothing in the listing suggests a fiddly start: install the desktop app, choose folders, and changes copy as they happen.
- 1
Best for encrypted storage with 20 GB free
MEGA gives you 20 GB free, and every file is encrypted on your device before upload, so only you and the people you pick hold the keys.
- 2
Paid plans start at about $3.73 a month
As its pricing page puts it: €3.33 per month, charged yearly.
- 3
There is a free plan
20 GB of storage with a limited transfer quota. Calls are capped at 1 hour and 100 participants, and Rewind is view-only.
- 4
It runs on 6 platforms
Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Zero-knowledge encryption
Data is encrypted before it leaves the device, and MEGA says only the owner and the people they authorize hold the keys needed to read it.
- 6
Sync and backup
The desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux syncs folders and backs up a computer to MEGA, replicating changes as they happen.
- 7
Sharing with link controls
Files and folders can be shared with people who have no MEGA account, with read-only or full access. Links can carry a password or an expiry date.
- 8
Refunds: no set window
Outside the European Union, Brazil and South Korea, MEGA's terms call every purchase final and non-refundable and leave any refund to its own discretion. Against that, cancelling is genuinely easy: four clicks in the web app, or a couple of taps in the phone apps, and you keep the paid features to the end of the billing period.
- 9
A 3.2 GPA, above 12 of 17
That is against the other file storage and sync services we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 10
Keep it
To replace MEGA you would be making files kept in step across devices without losing one. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for encrypted storage with 20 GB free
MEGA gives you 20 GB free, and every file is encrypted on your device before upload, so only you and the people you pick hold the keys. Prices are set in euros, downloads count against a transfer quota that is limited on the free plan, Essential is yearly only, and Business needs at least 3 users.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | Essential is €3.33 a month charged yearly for 200 GB, which lands inside the cheapest quarter of this category without being the cheapest way in. Pro I is 3 TB for €9.99 where Dropbox and Google sell 2 TB for $9.99, and a VPN and password manager come with any paid plan. You pay in euros. |
| Free plan and trial | B | 20 GB free is the largest free allowance in this category, encrypted like the paid plans, with up to 100 versions of a file. One person could live on it. It isn't limitless, mind: downloads draw on a transfer quota, and calls stop at an hour. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole job: device-side encryption, folder sync and computer backup, links with a password or expiry, 100 versions of a file and Rewind back 60 days on paid plans, plus encrypted chat and video calls. The transfer quota on downloads is what keeps it off an A. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.6 from about 108,000 App Store ratings, below the top of this category. Nothing in the listing suggests a fiddly start: install the desktop app, choose folders, and changes copy as they happen. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, plus a browser extension, with official Linux packages for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and Arch. There's a public API for developers too, though no ready-made hook-ups with other apps are listed. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who MEGA is for
- Fits if you want encrypted storage with 20 GB on the free plan
- Works for Linux users, with official packages for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and Arch
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a fixed price in dollars, as MEGA sets and charges its prices in euros
- Tight if you download a lot, as the free quota is limited and Pro Lite allows 1 TB of transfer a month
- Not for you if you want the smallest plan month by month, since Essential is shown with yearly charging only
- Watch out: Business needs at least 3 users and is usage-based, from €15 a month for a 3 TB base
- Watch out: free calls stop at 1 hour, Rewind is view-only, and no ready-made app integrations are listed
Good to know
Good for
- People who want encrypted storage with a 20 GB free tier
- Linux users: official packages cover Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch and others
- Large personal archives, with individual plans of up to 20 TB
Worth knowing
- Prices are set and charged in euros; amounts shown in other currencies on the site are estimates.
- Downloads count against a transfer quota, which is limited on the free plan and 1 TB a month on Pro Lite.
- Business and Pro Flexi are usage-based, starting from €15.00 per month for a 3 TB base. Business needs at least 3 users.
- The Essential plan is shown only with yearly charging on the pricing page.
Part 02 · Tips
Insider tips
What most people miss: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches
7
Things most people miss, each from its own help pages
The things about MEGA that are easy to miss until they cost you: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches at renewal or when you leave. Each one is from MEGA’s own pages, linked beside it.
Read on Oct 17, 2026. Read from MEGA's help centre (recovery key, transfer quota, link quota sharing, file requests, refunds, cancelling, over-quota accounts and inactive accounts) on 17 October 2026. Not tried out: these tips are what its own pages say.
- 1
Setting
Download your recovery key before anything else
MEGA's help page says the recovery key is the only way to reset a forgotten password, or to get past two-factor sign-in if you lose your authenticator. On the website it's Settings → Security → Recovery key → Back up key. Save it somewhere that isn't your MEGA account.
help.mega.io - 2
Pay less
Transfer quota rarely matters for your own files
MEGA's help page says the quota only starts to apply to a file once it has been downloaded in full more than 10 times. Syncing your own devices and sharing with a few people sits well under that. Free users are limited by what their internet address downloaded in the last 6 hours.
help.mega.io - 3
Setting
Check how much of your quota your public links can spend
On paid plans, people downloading from your links can use 25% of your transfer quota by default. Move the slider under Settings → Transfers, down to 0% if you like. MEGA's help page warns that if their downloads take you past your base quota, you're charged for the extra.
help.mega.io - 4
Easy to miss
Collect files from people with no MEGA account using a file request
Under Shared items → File requests, pick a folder and MEGA gives you an upload link. Anyone can drop files in, encrypted in their browser, and they can't see what others sent. Uploads don't use your transfer quota but do count towards your storage. Anyone with the link can upload, so share it carefully.
help.mega.io - 5
Renewal
Payments are generally not refundable, so cancel before it renews
MEGA's refund page says subscriptions generally aren't refunded. The exceptions: a charge made in error, reported within 30 days, or a mistaken payment you haven't used at all, reported within 24 hours. MEGA can't refund App Store payments either, so those go through Apple.
help.mega.io - 6
Leaving
Over your limit after downgrading? You get 75 days, then data goes
MEGA's help page says an account over its storage limit for 30 days is locked: view only, and you can't delete or download. It stays locked for 45 more days with reminders, and then the data is deleted. Download or clear what doesn't fit before your paid plan ends.
help.mega.io - 7
Leaving
A free account left unused for about 10 months can lose its files
MEGA's help page says free accounts that go unused get warning emails, and the data is eventually deleted, at least 10 months after your last activity. The account stays, just empty. Logging in, or leaving the desktop app signed in, keeps it active. Pro accounts are exempt.

- Data is encrypted before it leaves the device, and MEGA says only the owner and the people they authorize hold the keys needed to read it.
- Sync and backup
- The desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux syncs folders and backs up a computer to MEGA, replicating changes as they happen.

Other file storage and sync services it is graded above
MEGA's GPA of 3.2 is higher than 12 of the 17 other file storage and sync services we grade, and level with 2.
It stands best on platforms and integrations (A, above 7 of 17) and worst on ease of use (B, above 4).

Keep it
To replace MEGA you would be making files kept in step across devices without losing one. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 12 of the 17 other file storage and sync services we grade. It costs $44.78 a year.
What you could not
- Files kept in step across devices without losing one.
- Video calls.
- Storing and serving files for other people.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- An API that other software can build on.
- End-to-end encryption done properly.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

Against that, cancelling is genuinely easy: four clicks in the web app, or a couple of taps in the phone apps, and you keep the paid features to the end of the billing period. MEGA also promises to refund promptly any payment that slips through after you cancel. Ordinary, so a C.

A charge you believe is an error must be raised through the support page within 30 days. EU residents are given 14 days to withdraw for any reason, Brazil and South Korea 7.
Stated on mega.io- How to cancel MEGA
A subscription set up on MEGA's website is cancelled from the account's own settings in a desktop or mobile browser, or from the iOS and Android apps. One bought through the App Store or Google Play has to be cancelled in that store instead. MEGA adds that if the Cancel subscription button is missing, the plan is already set not to renew.
- In a desktop browser, click your profile image at the top right
- Click Settings
- Click Plan
- Click Cancel subscription in the middle pane
- Click Continue cancellation
- What you keep afterwards
MEGA says you keep the paid features until the end of the current billing period. The terms add that if you cancel but keep the account as a free one, access may be restricted or blocked where your usage is above the free limits at that time, and that no part-refund is given for allowance you have not used. Closing the account entirely is done through the Delete account link in the account settings.
Stated on help.mega.io- Renewals
The terms say recurring subscriptions renew indefinitely, monthly or annually, on the same day of the month they were set up, unless cancelled before the renewal date, and that subscriptions bought through an app store follow that store's dates and terms. No reminder before a renewal is mentioned, but MEGA does say any payment processed after an effective cancellation will be promptly refunded.
Stated on mega.io
In your favour
- You cancel it yourself, in the browser or in either phone app, with nobody to write to.
- The paid features run to the end of the billing period you have already paid for.
- MEGA promises to refund promptly any payment that goes through after a cancellation takes effect.
- If the Cancel subscription button is not there, MEGA says the plan is already set not to renew.
Watch out for
- Outside the EU, Brazil and South Korea, the terms say purchases are final and refunds are at MEGA's discretion.
- A charge you think is wrong has to be raised within 30 days, and a mistaken payment within 24 hours.
- No part-refund is given for storage allowance you never used.
- Drop back to free and your account can be restricted or blocked if your files are over the free limit.
Customer support
Ordinary · checked Oct 18, 2026
A big help centre in nineteen languages and a detailed support form that routes your problem by category. The catch is silence on timing: the form says only that MEGA will get back to you as soon as possible, and no page states hours or a reply target. Free accounts are told outright that paid accounts are seen first. That is the ordinary arrangement, so a C.
Ways to get help
Contact form or ticket
A support request form where you pick a category and an issue, describe the problem in at least 30 characters and attach screenshots or logs up to 10 MB. MEGA says priority goes to paid accounts and that it will get back to you as soon as possible.

- What depends on your plan
MEGA's pricing comparison lists basic support on the Free plan and priority support on its paid plans. The support form repeats it, saying priority is given to paid accounts and suggesting an upgrade for faster assistance. Neither page attaches a time to either level.
Stated on mega.io
In your favour
- The help centre is large, open to anyone and offered in nineteen languages.
- The support form sorts your problem by category and takes screenshots and log files.
- Free accounts can still raise a request, not just paying ones.
- MEGA says plainly that paid accounts are looked at first, rather than leaving you to guess.
Watch out for
- No page states support hours or a reply target, on any plan.
- Priority support is a label with no stated time behind it.
- A free account is told in so many words that it goes behind paying ones in the queue.
- There is no chat and no phone line: the form is the only way to reach a person.
What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: MEGA's terms of service, including its refunds, renewals and cancellation clauses, the help centre article on cancelling a subscription, the help centre's front page, the contact page, the support request form and the pricing page's plan comparison.
