Best for long academic documents on a Mac

Mellel is a Mac word processor built for the long, heavy stuff: theses, papers and books with notes stacked on notes. You pay $69.99 once, and you get 30 days free to try it first. But it's Mac and iPad only, and citations lean on Bookends, a separate app you buy on top.

Who Mellel is for

  • Great if you're writing a thesis or a book on a Mac, with notes and cross-references everywhere
  • Handy when you mix Hebrew, Arabic or Syriac with other languages, even in one sentence
  • A treat if you already use Bookends and want citations formatted as you write

Who Mellel is not for

  • Skip it if you're on Windows or Android, as it's Mac and iPad only
  • Pricey if you need citations and don't own Bookends, since the bundle with it is $114.99
  • Not for you if you'd work mostly on an iPad, because Mellel Mobile lacks some of the Mac's editing options

Why Mellel gets a 3.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for money$69.99 once for a licence that never expires, on up to 5 computers. That's less than a year of a typical $10 a month writing tool. Updates are free for two years, and after that an upgrade is listed at $44.
  • CFree plan and trialThere's no free plan for the Mac app, but the 30-day trial comes without restrictions. The iPad app, Mellel Mobile, is a free download with in-app purchases from $9.99.
  • AFeaturesAutomatic headings with an outline you can rearrange, as many streams of footnotes and endnotes as you like, reusable style sets, and right-to-left text for Arabic, Hebrew and Syriac. It opens and saves Word files and exports ePUB. Citations go through Bookends, though.
  • BEase of useThere's no App Store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. It's a Mac app you download, and the 30-day trial has no restrictions, so you can learn it on a real chapter before paying.
  • CPlatforms and integrationsMac, plus an iPad app that opens the same documents, with iCloud and Bookends hooked in. That's all Apple. There's no Windows, Android or web version, and the iPad app lacks some of the Mac's editing options.
