GPA, above 21 of the 30 other whiteboard and mind map tools we grade
Milanote is a visual workspace for organizing creative projects on boards that mix notes, images, links, videos, files and sketches. It is aimed at designers, filmmakers, writers and marketers who build moodboards, storyboards and project plans, and boards can be shared with clients or teammates to edit, comment or view. The Free plan has the same features as the paid plans but caps content at 100 items and 10 file uploads.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Milanote, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card
Best for moodboards and storyboards for creative work
Milanote is a pinboard for creative projects: notes, images, links, videos and sketches on one board, used for moodboards, storyboards and briefs. The free plan has every feature but stops at 100 items and 10 uploads. Pro is $9.99 a person a month billed annually, team plans are annual only, and there are no integrations or API to connect it to your other tools.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $9.99 a person a month billed annually, the dear end of this category, and $12.50 if you pay month to month. Team plans are a flat $49 a month for up to 10 people, or $99 for up to 50, annual billing only. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free has no time limit, every feature of the paid plans and unlimited shared boards. The cap is what gets you: 100 notes, images or links, and 10 file uploads. One full moodboard can use most of that in an afternoon. |
| Features | B | It covers the job for visual work: boards mixing notes, images, videos, links, files and sketches, templates for moodboards, storyboards, briefs and shot lists, a web clipper that saves from any page, mind maps on the same canvas, and clients who can edit, comment or only view. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.71 from 3,921 App Store ratings. You drag things onto a board and move them about, and the templates mean you rarely start from nothing. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad and Android, plus a web clipper for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera. What keeps it off top marks is the wiring: the listing shows no integrations at all and no API, so boards don't talk to your other tools. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Milanote is for
- Fits if you collect references and ideas for design, film or writing projects
- Works for moodboards or storyboards a client needs to view or comment on
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're staying free, because 100 notes, images or links and 10 uploads don't last
- Not for you if you want boards wired into your other work tools, as no integrations or API are listed
- Pricey if you pay month to month on your own, at $12.50 against $9.99 billed annually
- Watch out: team plans are billed annually only, and over 50 people means a quote from sales
- Watch out: there's no Pro trial, so the free plan is the only way to try it
Good to know
Good for
- Designers, filmmakers and writers collecting references and ideas
- Building moodboards and storyboards to share with clients
- Teams of 5 to 50 who want one flat annual price
- Trying every feature on a free plan with no time limit
Worth knowing
- The Free plan stops at 100 notes, images or links and 10 file uploads, with images capped at 10MB each.
- Team plans are billed annually only; monthly billing exists only on the per-person plan at $12.50 a month.
- Teams of more than 50 people need a custom enterprise plan arranged through sales.
- There is no separate Pro trial: the vendor points people to the Free plan to try the product.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Milanote you could make: notes, mind mapping, templates and web clipper. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 21 of the 30 other whiteboard and mind map tools we grade. It costs $119.88 a year.
What you could make
- Notes, mind mapping, templates and web clipper: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- An endless canvas that stays smooth with hundreds of things on it.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Milanote’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
