Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 48 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade
MinimaList is a to-do list, checklist and reminder app for iPhone and iPad, with an Apple Watch app and support for Apple silicon Macs. Lists can be color-coded and shared, tasks take sub-tasks, memos and time-based or location-based reminders, and a focus timer covers Pomodoro sessions. The app is free, with a Premium upgrade sold as a monthly subscription or a lifetime purchase.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about MinimaList, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Widgets and Siri cover adding things without opening the app.
- 1
Best for a pared-back list with reminders on iPhone
It's Apple only, and there are no projects, tags or boards.
- 2
Paid plans start at $2.99 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $2.99 per month, or $5.99 as a lifetime purchase (US App Store).
- 3

- 4
It runs on 2 platforms
iOS and macOS.
- 5
Colored lists and custom themes
Separate lists serve different purposes and can be color-coded. The background, font style and size, and notification sounds can all be changed.

Reminders
Reminders can be based on a time or a location and can repeat. A reminder can be set to snooze itself automatically up to three times.
- 7

The report card
Best for a pared-back list with reminders on iPhone
MinimaList is a to-do and reminder app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, with colour-coded lists, reminders by time or place, sub-tasks and a Pomodoro timer. It's free to use, but neither its site nor its App Store listing says which features need Premium, and the prices quoted there don't agree with each other. It's Apple only, and there are no projects, tags or boards.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Lifetime Premium is $5.99 once, against about $48 for a year on this category's middle subscription, and the monthly option is $2.99. The money is small; the muddle isn't, since the description quotes $0.99 a month while the purchase list says $2.99. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free to download with no trial clock, but neither the vendor's site nor the App Store listing says which features Premium holds back. With six paid items on that listing, expect to meet a wall; we just can't tell you where it is. |
| Features | C | It does a small job: colour-coded lists, sub-tasks, memos, reminders by time or place that repeat and snooze themselves up to three times, a time written into a task becoming its reminder, and a focus timer. No projects, tags or boards, and a shared list's link only opens in Safari. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: install it, type a task, and write the time into the sentence if you want reminding. Widgets and Siri cover adding things without opening the app. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | One family of devices: iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, plus M1-or-later Macs, where it runs as the iPad app. Apple Calendar and Siri are the only connections, and there's no Android, Windows or web version. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who MinimaList is for
- Fits if you want a plain list with reminders on your iPhone
- Works for reminders tied to a place, like the shop, as well as a time
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you use Android, Windows or a browser, as it's Apple only, and on a Mac it runs as the iPad app on M1 or later
- Not for you if you want to know what you're paying for, since nothing says what Premium includes
- Watch out: the description quotes $0.99 a month or $5.99 a year, while the purchase list shows $2.99 monthly and several lifetime prices
- Too light for real projects, with no projects, tags or boards
- Watch out: a link to a shared list has to be opened in Safari
Good to know
Good for
- iPhone users who want a pared-back list with reminders
- People who like a Pomodoro timer next to their tasks
- Sharing a grocery list with someone else who uses an iPhone
Worth knowing
- Apple only: iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, plus Macs with an M1 chip or later, where it runs as the iPad app. No Android, Windows or web version is listed.
- The listing's description quotes Premium at $0.99 a month or $5.99 a year, but its in-app purchase list shows Pay Monthly at $2.99 and several lifetime options.
- Neither the vendor's site nor the App Store listing says which features are free and which need Premium.
- A link to a shared list must be opened in Safari, according to the App Store listing.

Keep it, or make your own?

Keep it
The plain part of MinimaList you could make: tasks, natural-language input and Pomodoro timer. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $35.88 a year.
What you could make
- Tasks, natural-language input and Pomodoro timer: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
- Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app, widgets, Siri and the lock screen.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
What this rests on. MinimaList’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
