Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 38 of the 40 other automation tools we grade

Node-RED is an open-source, flow-based programming tool, first developed at IBM and now part of the OpenJS Foundation. Flows are wired together from nodes in a browser-based editor and deployed to a lightweight Node.js runtime that can run on a local computer, on a Raspberry Pi, in Docker or in the cloud. It is released under the Apache 2.0 license, and you install and host it yourself.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Node-RED, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Custom logic means writing JavaScript, flows need git to be versioned, and Android support is described as a bit experimental.
From our report card of Node-RED
  1. 1

Best for home and device automation on a Raspberry Pi

There's no hosted service from the project, so you install and run it with Node.js or Docker yourself.

  2. 2

    It is free

Node-RED has no paid plan at all. Free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license; the project sells no paid edition. You install and run it yourself, and hosted services come from third parties such as FlowFuse.

  3. 3

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, Windows and Linux.

  4. 4

    Browser-based flow editor

Flows are built by wiring together nodes from a palette in the browser, then deployed to the runtime in a single click.

  5. 5

    Function nodes

JavaScript functions can be written inside the editor in a rich text editor, and a built-in library saves functions, templates and flows for reuse.

  6. 6

    Community nodes and flow library

The palette can be extended with new nodes, and the project says the community has shared more than 5,000 nodes and flows. An online flow library hosts them.

  7. 7

    A 3.0 GPA, above 38 of 40

That is against the other automation tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  8. 8

    Keep it

Node-RED is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

The report card

Best for home and device automation on a Raspberry Pi

Node-RED is free and open source: you wire nodes together in a browser and deploy with one click, on anything from a Raspberry Pi to the cloud. There's no hosted service from the project, so you install and run it with Node.js or Docker yourself. Custom logic means writing JavaScript, flows need git to be versioned, and Android support is described as a bit experimental.

ToolGPA report cardNode-REDGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree and open source under the Apache 2.0 license, with no paid edition at all, where tools in this category start around $15 a month. You pay for whatever it runs on, and that can be a Raspberry Pi.
Free plan and trialAThe whole project is free, with nothing metered and no account to make: the runtime, the browser editor and the community's nodes and flows. Hosted versions come from third parties such as FlowFuse, if you'd rather not run it.
FeaturesBA browser editor that deploys to the runtime in one click, JavaScript function nodes, a palette you extend from more than 5,000 community nodes and flows, flows saved as JSON and put under git, an admin API, and module APIs for embedding it in your own app. That covers the job.
Ease of useDThere's no hosted service from the project: you install Node.js or Docker and run it yourself. The project calls it low-code, which in practice means custom logic goes in JavaScript function nodes, and git is needed before flows can be versioned.
Platforms and integrationsBThe editor runs in a browser and the runtime runs almost anywhere: Windows, Linux, Docker, a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone, AWS or Azure, with Android through Termux described as a bit experimental. MQTT, an admin HTTP API and the module APIs do the connecting.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Node-RED is for

  • Fits if you're automating a home or a bench full of devices from a Raspberry Pi
  • Works for developers who are happy running a Node.js service themselves

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want to sign up and go, because you install and host it yourself
  • Not for you if you can't write a little JavaScript, as custom logic lives in function nodes
  • Watch out: hosted versions come only from third parties such as FlowFuse, not the project
  • Tight if you want it on a phone, as running on Android through Termux is described as a bit experimental
  • Watch out: flows are saved as JSON, and you need git set up before they can be versioned

Good to know

Good for

  • Home automation and device projects on hardware such as a Raspberry Pi
  • Industrial teams collecting and transforming operational data
  • Developers who are comfortable running a Node.js service themselves

Worth knowing

  • Node-RED is software you install and run yourself; the project offers no hosted service of its own, though third parties such as FlowFuse do.
  • The machine that runs it needs a supported version of Node.js, or Docker.
  • The project calls it low-code: custom logic is written as JavaScript in function nodes.
  • Running on Android through Termux is described in the docs as a bit experimental.

What it does

Its main features, where it runs, what it works with and who makes it

Places it runs: Web, Windows and Linux

Open-source, flow-based programming tool for event-driven apps. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: open source, self-hostable, public API, workflow automation.

MQTT, an admin HTTP API and the module APIs do the connecting.
From our grade for platforms and integrations
Browser-based flow editor
Flows are built by wiring together nodes from a palette in the browser, then deployed to the runtime in a single click.
Function nodes
JavaScript functions can be written inside the editor in a rich text editor, and a built-in library saves functions, templates and flows for reuse.
Community nodes and flow library
The palette can be extended with new nodes, and the project says the community has shared more than 5,000 nodes and flows. An online flow library hosts them.
Runs from edge devices to the cloud
The Node.js runtime is light enough for low-cost hardware such as the Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone, and guides also cover Docker, Windows, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
Flows stored as JSON
Flows are saved as JSON, which can be imported and exported to share with others. A Projects feature, which needs git, puts flows under version control.
APIs and embedding
An Admin HTTP API administers the runtime remotely, and module APIs let developers embed Node-RED in an existing Node.js application.

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

38/40

Other automation tools it is graded above

Node-RED's GPA of 3.0 is higher than 38 of the 40 other automation tools we grade, and level with 2.

It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 37 of 40) and worst on ease of use (D, above 0).

Node-RED has no paid plan.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.3 out of 4, and no tool on the category's chart scores higher without costing more.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Node-RED is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces. It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 38 of the 40 other automation tools we grade.

What you could not

  • Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
  • A real app for Windows and Linux. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Node-RED’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
