Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 72 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade
NotallyX is a free, open-source note-taking app for Android, built as an extended version of the Notally app. It covers rich text notes and task lists with subtasks, along with reminders, file attachments, audio notes, labels, colors and home-screen widgets. Notes are stored only on the device and the app has no sync of its own, though backups can be written automatically to a folder you choose.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about NotallyX, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Nothing to set up or sign into: open it and write.
- 1

The report card
Best for simple notes and checklists on Android, no account
NotallyX is a free Android notes app along the lines of Google Keep, without the Google account: notes, checklists with subtasks, reminders, labels and widgets, with no ads. But it's Android only with no sync, uninstalling deletes your notes unless you've backed up, and its own README says the app was pulled from Google Play for a time after users reported losing notes. Turn on automatic backups on day one.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free and open source under GPL 3.0, in a category whose middle plan is $6 a month. The FAQ says there are no in-app purchases, subscriptions or advertisements, and donations are optional. |
| Free plan and trial | A | The whole app is free, from GitHub or the IzzyOnDroid repository, with no paid tier and no account to create, so there's nothing to run out of. |
| Features | C | Rich text notes, task lists with subtasks, repeating reminders, pictures, PDFs and audio notes, labels, colors, widgets and an app lock. The listing names two gaps: no sync of any kind, and a README saying the developer pulled the app from Google Play for a time after several users reported losing notes. |
| Ease of use | B | Nothing to set up or sign into: open it and write. No store rating is on record to go by. The homework is backups, because uninstalling deletes your notes unless you've made one. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Android and only Android, on 5.0 and above. No iPhone, desktop or web version, and no integrations listed. The nearest thing to sync is pointing the backup folder at cloud or WebDAV storage another app mounts. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who NotallyX is for
- Fits if you want a plain notes app on Android with no ads and no sign-up
- Works for people moving out of Google Keep, Evernote or Quillpad, which it imports from
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want the same notes on a laptop or iPhone, as it's Android only with no sync
- Not for you if you won't keep backups, because uninstalling the app deletes its notes
- Watch out: the README says several users reported losing notes, and it urges daily automatic backups
- Too light for syncing, as the docs only suggest pointing the backup folder at cloud storage another app mounts
Good to know
Good for
- Android users who want a simple notes app with no ads or account
- Checklists with subtasks and reminders
- People moving notes over from Google Keep, Evernote or Quillpad
Worth knowing
- Android only, for devices running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and above.
- The README says the developer temporarily removed the app from Google Play after several users reported losing notes, and urges daily automatic backups.
- There is no built-in sync. The docs suggest pointing the backup folder at cloud or WebDAV storage mounted by a third-party app.
- Uninstalling the app deletes its notes unless a backup has been made first.

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
NotallyX is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
What you could make
- Notes and tasks: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Hooks into the device itself: widgets.
What this rests on. NotallyX’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
