Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 6 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade

NoteCircle is a to-do app for iPhone and iPad built around a weekly view. Daily to-dos, weekly recurring routines and dated events such as birthdays share one list, with separate checklists for things like shopping or packing. A weekly goal can be pinned to the top of the list, a monthly report shows completion rates, and events can be brought in from Google and Apple calendars.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about NoteCircle, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Daily tasks and the week sit on one screen, and you can add a task by voice or by photographing a handwritten list.

The report card

Best for planning to-dos and routines a week at a time

NoteCircle plans your to-dos a week at a time, with one-off tasks, weekly routines and dates like birthdays in one list and a weekly goal on top. It's free to use, but nobody says which features need Premium at $3.99 a month, and refunds for unused time aren't offered. It's built for iPhone and iPad, with no web version, and Android gets limited features.

Value for moneyC$3.99 a month is exactly this category's middle price, and the year is $29.99, with Lifetime at $59.99. What holds it back is the fog: the vendor says only that Premium unlocks advanced features, so you're paying before you know what for.
Free plan and trialCFree to download and use, but neither the vendor's site nor the App Store listing says which features need Premium, so we can't tell you how far the free version goes.
FeaturesCIt does the weekly planner fully: a week you swipe through, routines pinned to chosen weekdays, a weekly goal on top, a monthly completion report, checklists, a Someday list, calendar imports and a photo-to-tasks scanner. But that's a smaller job than this category's, with no projects to speak of.
Ease of useB4.6 from 1,223 App Store ratings, a hair under the 4.7 a top mark wants. Daily tasks and the week sit on one screen, and you can add a task by voice or by photographing a handwritten list.
Platforms and integrationsCOne family of devices: iPhone and iPad, plus a Mac running that same app on macOS 11 or newer. No web version, and the vendor's page says Android users get limited features for now and links only the iOS download.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who NoteCircle is for

  • Fits if you plan your to-dos a week at a time
  • Works for keeping weekly routines next to one-off tasks on an iPhone or iPad

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want a web version or a full Android app, as it's built for iPhone and iPad
  • Not for you if you want to know what Premium adds before paying, as neither the site nor the App Store says
  • Too light for project work, since this is a week planner rather than a task system
  • Watch out: there are no refunds for the unused part of a billed subscription period
  • Watch out: on a Mac it runs as the iPhone and iPad app and needs macOS 11 or newer

Good to know

Good for

  • People who plan their to-dos a week at a time
  • Keeping weekly routines alongside one-off tasks
  • iPhone and iPad users who want calendar events in their list

Worth knowing

  • Neither the vendor's site nor the App Store listing says which features need Premium.
  • There is no web version; on a Mac it runs as the iPhone and iPad app, which the FAQ says needs macOS 11 or newer.
  • The vendor's page says Android users get limited features for now, and it links only the iOS download.
  • The listing states that refunds are not available for the unused part of a billed subscription period.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.

You could make the core of NoteCircle for yourself: tasks, habit tracking, goals, calendar and reports. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $29.99 a year it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.

What you could make

  • Tasks, habit tracking, goals, calendar and reports: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.

What this rests on. NoteCircle’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
