The report card
Best for handwriting, PDFs and real documents in one iPad app
Notes Writer is an iPad app that goes past handwriting and PDF markup into Word, Markdown and LaTeX editors, lecture transcripts and notebooks that run Python. A one-time $14.99 unlocks Pro. But the site publishes no prices and doesn't say what the free download leaves out, the store lists AI purchases with no billing period, the $1.99 Weekly plan comes to over $100 a year, and it's Apple only.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Lifetime Pro Full Unlock is $14.99 once on the US App Store. A year of the middle note app here is $72, at $6 a month, so this is a fifth of that and paid once. The $1.99 Weekly comes to over $100 a year for the same app. |
| Free plan and trial | C | It's a free download, but the site never says what the free version leaves out, and Pro, Lifetime Pro and the AI options are all sold inside the app. So there are caps and you'll only find them by walking into one. |
| Features | A | Pencil handwriting and PDF markup with form filling, redaction and measuring to scale, as its rivals do. Then the parts GoodNotes, Notability and Noteshelf don't have: editors for DOCX, RTF, Markdown and LaTeX, searchable lecture transcripts, a tree-style binder and corkboard, and Math Notebooks that run Python. |
| Ease of use | C | 4.48 from about 7,300 App Store ratings, which is just under the 4.5 our B band starts at. With this many kinds of document in one app, expect to spend a while finding your way around. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Apple only: iPad, iPhone and Apple silicon Macs, where it runs as the iPad app. It reads from iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive, but there's no Android, Windows or web version. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Notes Writer is for
- Fits if you record lectures and mark up course PDFs on an iPad
- Works for drafting in Word, Markdown or LaTeX next to your handwritten notes
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to see what's free and what's paid before you install, as the site doesn't say
- Not for you if you use Android or Windows, because it's Apple devices only, and Macs need Apple silicon
- Pricey if you pick the Weekly option, at $1.99 a week against $14.99 once for Lifetime Pro
- Watch out: Unlock All and AI is listed at $3.99 and $14.99 with no period, and included AI usage depends on the plan
- Watch out: a separate $14.99 app, Notes Writer Pro: Beyond PDFs, has its own $3.99 AI add-on, so check which one you buy
Good to know
Good for
- Students who record lectures and annotate course PDFs on an iPad
- Writers and researchers drafting in Word, Markdown or LaTeX beside their notes

Worth knowing

- On a Mac it runs as the iPad app and needs Apple silicon; no Android, Windows or web version is offered.
- The AI Assistant is optional, needs an internet connection, and its included usage depends on the plan.
- A separate paid app, Notes Writer Pro: Beyond PDFs, is listed at $14.99 on the US App Store with its own AI Assistant add-on at $3.99.

Keep it, or make your own?

Keep it
The plain part of Notes Writer you could make: notes, documents, Markdown and long-form writing. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $103.48 a year.
What you could make
- Notes, documents, Markdown and long-form writing: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- An endless canvas that stays smooth with hundreds of things on it.
- Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- Hooks into the device itself: Apple Pencil and handwriting.
- The depth: we grade its features A, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Notes Writer’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
