Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 43 of the 69 other writing tools we grade

novelWriter is a free, open-source editor for novels, released under the GPL-3.0 license by The Saga Software Project. A book is assembled from many small plain-text documents written in a Markdown-like syntax, with meta data tags for comments, synopses and cross-references to project notes. It is built for Linux and Windows; the macOS installer has been discontinued for now.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about novelWriter, taken from its own pages and our grades.

You have to learn its own Markdown-like syntax, and it's scoped to novels and short fiction.

Best for free novel writing in plain text files

novelWriter is a free, open-source editor that builds a novel out of small plain-text files, with tags linking scenes to notes. You have to learn its own Markdown-like syntax, and it's scoped to novels and short fiction. The Mac installer was discontinued in 2026, so on a Mac it runs only through a Python install, and there's no web or phone version.

ToolGPA report cardnovelWriterGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree and open source under the GPL-3.0 licence, downloadable and complete, so there's nothing to buy in a category where paid plans start around $8.33 a month in the middle. The site has a Donate link if you want to chip in.
Free plan and trialAThe complete editor is free on every system it supports. There's no paid tier, no cap and nothing held back.
FeaturesCIt does the novel job fully, and that's a smaller job than most of this category: a project tree of scenes you reorder, tags linking scenes to notes, an Outline View, and Build Manuscript to Open Document, Word, PDF, HTML or Markdown. The listing scopes it to novels and short fiction.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and you have to learn its own Markdown-like syntax and build a tree of documents before it's much use. Installing is simple on Windows and Linux; on a Mac it's a Python package now the DMG is discontinued.
Platforms and integrationsCLinux and Windows 10 or newer, plus a Mac only through the Python package now the macOS installer is gone. A desktop program is still only computers, however many it runs on: no web, no mobile and no integrations on record.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who novelWriter is for

  • Fits if you're on Linux or Windows and want a free editor made for novels
  • Works for keeping a manuscript in version control or a synced folder, as it's all plain text

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you're on a Mac and don't fancy setting up Python, as the Mac installer is discontinued
  • Not for you if you want standard Markdown, because it uses its own Markdown-like syntax
  • Too light for non-fiction or academic work, since it's scoped to novels and short fiction
  • Not for you if you write on a phone or in a browser, as no web or mobile version is offered
  • Watch out: the Windows installer needs Windows 10 or newer, and no integrations are listed

Good to know

Good for

  • Novelists on Linux or Windows who want a free plain-text editor
  • Writers who keep manuscripts under version control or file sync
  • Books with many scenes and cross-referenced notes

Worth knowing

  • macOS DMG releases were discontinued as of release 2026.1; on a Mac it runs only by installing the Python package.
  • The Windows installer is made for Windows 10 or newer.
  • It is scoped to novels and short fiction and uses its own Markdown-like syntax, not standard Markdown.
  • No web or mobile version is offered.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

novelWriter is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

What you could make

  • Long-form writing and Markdown: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for Windows and Linux. Something home-made would be a web page.
