Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 36 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade

Numi is a calculator for Mac that mixes math with plain text: you write an expression in words or symbols on a line and it returns the result. It converts currencies, units and time zones, supports variables and running totals, and can be extended with JavaScript plugins. The Mac app is the main version; a Windows build is offered as a preview and a terminal version runs on macOS and Linux.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Numi, taken from its own pages and our grades.

One odd bit, the buy page shows no price before checkout.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for sums you type out in plain words on a Mac

Numi is a Mac calculator you type into like a note, with the answer beside each line and currencies, units and time zones converted.

  2. 2

    What it costs

Paid plans start at $29.99 one-time purchase (Numi License).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Free download. A license activates unlimited notes and iCloud sync, and the changelog says creating a new note requires activation; the vendor does not state the free note limit.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    macOS, Windows and Linux.

  5. 5

    Calculations written as text

Type an expression in words or symbols, such as a dollar amount in euros minus a percentage discount, and Numi answers it. Word operators such as plus, times and divide by work alongside signs.

  6. 6

    Currency and unit conversion

Converts currencies by ISO code, name or sign, with rates updated several times a day, plus cryptocurrencies and units of length, area, volume, weight, temperature, data and CSS.

  7. 7

    Time zones and dates

Shows the current time for a city or time zone, converts a given time from one zone to another, and handles date arithmetic such as today plus two weeks.

  8. 8

    A 2.6 GPA, above 36 of 94

That is against the other desktop utilities we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Your call

It depends on the utility: a converter or a calculator is an afternoon.

The report card

Best for sums you type out in plain words on a Mac

Numi is a Mac calculator you type into like a note, with the answer beside each line and currencies, units and time zones converted. It's free to download, but creating a new note needs the $29.99 license, and the free limit isn't stated. The Windows build is a preview, Linux gets only a terminal version without dates, variables or plugins, and the buy page shows no price until checkout.

ToolGPA report cardNumiGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyA$29.99 once at the Paddle checkout, no subscription. Utilities here sit at $2.99 a month in the middle, so that's under a year of a subscription and then it's yours. It's in Setapp too, if you already pay the $14.99 a month for that.
Free plan and trialCIt's a free download, but the cap arrives fast: the changelog says creating a new note needs activation, and the vendor doesn't say how many notes you get. The licence adds unlimited notes and iCloud sync.
FeaturesCTyped sums are its one job and it covers them: words or symbols, currencies updated several times a day, units from length to CSS, time zones, dates, variables and running totals. Plugins are JavaScript, though the docs say only a limited part of the API is exposed.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: you write "plus" or "divide by" the way you'd say it and the answer appears beside the line. One odd bit, the buy page shows no price before checkout.
Platforms and integrationsCIn practice this is a Mac app. The Windows build is labelled a preview, the Linux desktop app is still coming soon, and Linux gets only the terminal version, which has no dates, variables or plugins. An Alfred workflow and iCloud sync are the tie-ins.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Numi is for

  • Fits if you do quick sums with currencies, units or percentages on a Mac
  • Works for people who want labels beside the numbers in a running calculation

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you need a finished Windows or Linux app, as one is a preview and the other is terminal only
  • Tight if you're staying free, because making a new note needs a license and the free limit isn't stated
  • Not for you if you'd live in the terminal version, which has no dates, time zones, variables or plugins yet
  • Watch out: the buy page shows no price before checkout, where it's $29.99
  • Watch out: plugins are JavaScript, but the docs say only a limited part of the API is exposed

Good to know

Good for

  • Mac users doing quick sums with currencies, units or percentages
  • Keeping a running calculation with labels and comments beside the numbers
  • Buyers who prefer a one-time license to a subscription

Worth knowing

  • The Windows build is labelled a preview and the Linux desktop app is listed as coming soon; on Linux only the terminal version is available.
  • The terminal version does not yet support dates, time zone conversion, variables, plugins or the sum, prev and avg tokens.
  • Unlimited notes and iCloud sync need the paid license, and the changelog says creating a new note requires activation.
  • The buy page shows no price before checkout; $29.99 is the US price from the Paddle checkout that the Buy button opens.

Other desktop utilities it is graded above

Numi's GPA of 2.6 is higher than 36 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade, and level with 20.

It stands best on value for money (A, above 24 of 94) and worst on features (C, above 1).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

It depends on the utility: a converter or a calculator is an afternoon.

You could make the core of Numi for yourself: calculator and natural-language input. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $29.99, paid once, it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.

What you could make

  • Calculator and natural-language input: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux that stay in step with each other.

What this rests on. Numi’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
