Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
3.2
GPA, above 15 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools we grade
Odoo is a suite of business apps, and this listing covers its Accounting and Invoicing apps. Accounting handles bank synchronization, AI matching and bill capture, invoices, follow-ups, deferrals, country tax setups and real-time reports. A single app is free for unlimited users, while the paid plans charge per user for every Odoo app at once; an open-source Community edition can be hosted yourself.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Odoo, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Charts of accounts and taxes come set up for your country, which helps, but it's a big system, and implementation help is sold separately.
- 1
Best for full accounting free for any number of users
Odoo's Accounting app is free on its own for as many users as you like, with bank sync, AI matching, bill capture and tax setups for your country.
- 2
Paid plans start at $2.07 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $31.10 per user / month, billed annually, after $24.90 for the first 12 months.
- 3
There is a free plan
One App Free: any one app, such as Accounting or Invoicing, plus the apps it depends on, for unlimited users on Odoo Online, free with no time limit.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 5
Bank synchronization
Connects to more than 28,000 banks worldwide, and Odoo says AI matching reconciles about 95% of transactions automatically.
- 6
Bill and receipt capture
AI reads vendor bills and expense photos taken on the mobile app. The scanning uses in-app purchase credits sold apart from the plans.
- 7
Invoices and follow-ups
Unlimited invoices and bills, with scheduled reminders for late payers by email, post or text message.
- 8
A 3.2 GPA, above 15 of 17
That is against the other accounting and invoicing tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Odoo you would be making live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for full accounting free for any number of users
Odoo's Accounting app is free on its own for as many users as you like, with bank sync, AI matching, bill capture and tax setups for your country. That's rare in accounting. The catch comes when you add a second Odoo app: every user then goes on a paid plan, $31.10 a user a month billed yearly after a cheaper first year.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | The Accounting app is free on its own, hosted by Odoo, for unlimited users and several companies. You pay only once you add a second app, and then it's per user: Standard is $24.90 a month for the first year, then $31.10, billed yearly. |
| Free plan and trial | A | One App Free gives you Accounting for unlimited users with no time limit, so no normal business hits a cap. The limit is one app: adding Expenses, Inventory or anything else moves everyone to a paid plan. |
| Features | B | Bank sync with 28,000+ banks, AI matching, bill and receipt capture, invoices, late-payment follow-ups, deferrals, real-time reports and taxes and e-invoicing set up by country. That's the whole job, though bill scanning runs on credits bought separately. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record. Charts of accounts and taxes come set up for your country, which helps, but it's a big system, and implementation help is sold separately. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, with Stripe, PayPal and Adyen, plus bank sync worldwide. There's no desktop app, and the API needs the Custom plan. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Odoo is for
- Great if you want proper double-entry books with your whole team in them for nothing
- Handy when you'll add sales, inventory or HR later on the same system
- Good for businesses that need their country's taxes and e-invoicing set up for them
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you add a second app, as every user then pays, your accountant included
- Skip it if you want something you can learn in an afternoon, as it's a big system
- Tight if you scan lots of bills, since the AI scanning uses credits bought on top
Good to know
Good for
- Businesses that want full double-entry accounting free for any number of users
- Companies that expect to add inventory, sales or HR apps on the same system
- Businesses that need their country's charts of accounts, taxes and e-invoicing
Worth knowing
- Odoo is a wider suite: a second app moves you to a paid plan priced per user for every app, and on paid plans Studio or several companies mean Custom.
- The advertised prices are a 12-month discount for the users first ordered; plans then renew at $31.10 or $61 a user a month, billed yearly.
- Every backend user pays, including an outside accountant and staff who log expenses; limited-access employees can be $8.90 Light Users via an advisor.
- Not included: implementation services, Odoo.sh hosting, and in-app credits for text messages and AI bill scanning.

Part 04 · Standing
Where it stands
Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own
15/17
Other accounting and invoicing tools it is graded above
Odoo's GPA of 3.2 is higher than 15 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools we grade.
It stands best on value for money (A, above 15 of 17) and worst on ease of use (C, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $2.07 a month when paid by the year, against a middle price of $19 for the category: 0 of the 16 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.7 out of 4. 1 tool scores higher and costs less.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Odoo you would be making live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 15 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools we grade. It costs $24.90 a year. Odoo is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could make
- Invoicing, expense tracking and reports: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Odoo’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
