Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 0 of the 30 other whiteboard and mind map tools we grade
OmniGraffle is a diagramming and vector drawing app from The Omni Group for Mac, iPad and iPhone, used for flowcharts, wireframes and other precise diagrams. Documents are built from stencils, shapes and connected lines across multiple canvases and layers. It is sold as separate perpetual licenses for Mac and for iOS, each in Standard and Pro editions, or as a yearly subscription that covers the Pro version on all three devices.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about OmniGraffle, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Mac and iOS licenses are sold separately, Visio files need Pro, and each license covers one major version.
- 1
Best for precise diagrams and wireframes on a Mac
It's Apple only, with no integrations and no shared boards.
- 2
What it costs
Paid plans start at $59.99 one-time for iPhone and iPad; Mac from $149.99 one-time.
- 3
You can try it first
14-day fully functional free trial on Mac, iPhone and iPad, started by signing in to an Omni Account
- 4
It runs on 2 platforms
macOS and iOS.
- 5
Diagramming tools
Shapes connect with straight, orthogonal, curved or Bézier lines that stay attached, and on the Mac an outline tab builds a flowchart from an indented list.
- 6
Stencils and templates
The Resource Browser on Mac holds a collection of stencils and templates and searches Stenciltown, the vendor's library of stencils shared by users.
- 7
Canvases and layers
A document holds several canvases in fixed, flexible or infinite size modes, organized with layers. Shared layers and artboard layers are Pro features.
- 8
A 2.2 GPA, above 0 of 30

The report card
Best for precise diagrams and wireframes on a Mac
OmniGraffle is a diagramming and vector drawing app for Mac, iPad and iPhone, for flowcharts and wireframes where exact line placement matters, and you can buy it outright. It's Apple only, with no integrations and no shared boards. Mac and iOS licenses are sold separately, Visio files need Pro, and each license covers one major version.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | You buy it outright: $59.99 once on iPhone and iPad, $149.99 for a Mac Standard license. The middle of this category is $8.33 a month, so the Mac license is under two years of that, which is where a one-time price earns a B. Pro is $249.99, and the all-devices subscription is $129.99 a year. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free version at all. The 14-day trial is the full app on Mac, iPhone and iPad, and you start it by signing in to an Omni Account rather than handing over a card. After that you buy or subscribe. |
| Features | C | Shapes joined by lines that stay attached, stencils, several canvases and layers per document, a pen tool for wireframes, and on Mac an indented list that becomes a flowchart. Pro reads and writes Visio files. Diagramming done fully, but a smaller job than this category's: nothing here shares a board with anyone. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and this is not a thing you open and get on with: stencils, layers, artboards, a point editor and Bezier lines all want learning, and the trial starts with an Omni Account sign-in. The Resource Browser and Stenciltown at least give you shapes to start from. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | One family of devices: Mac, iPhone and iPad, with no Windows, Android or web version and no integrations listed at all. A Pro license can open and export Microsoft Visio files for swapping diagrams with people on Windows. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who OmniGraffle is for
- Fits if you want a native diagramming app on your Mac and iPad
- Works for buyers who'd rather own a license than subscribe
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you or your team use Windows, Android or the web, as it's Apple only
- Pricey if you want Pro on both Mac and iPad, since the licenses are sold separately: $249.99 plus $119.99
- Not for you if you expect free upgrades for life, because the next major version is a paid upgrade
- Watch out: Visio import and export, artboards and automation need Pro, not Standard
- Too light for team boards, since nothing here shares a canvas with anyone and no integrations are listed
Good to know
Good for
- Mac, iPad and iPhone users who want a native diagramming app
- Designers drawing wireframes and precise vector diagrams
- Buyers who prefer a perpetual license to a subscription
- People who need to open or hand over Microsoft Visio files
Worth knowing
- OmniGraffle runs only on Mac, iPhone and iPad; there is no Windows, Android or web version.
- Mac and iOS perpetual licenses are sold separately; only the $129.99 yearly subscription covers all three devices.
- Visio import and export, shared layers, artboards and automation need a Pro license or the subscription.
- A perpetual license covers one major version; the next major version is a paid upgrade, offered at a discount.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of OmniGraffle you could make: templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 2 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 25 of the 30 other whiteboard and mind map tools grade higher. It costs $59.99, paid once.
What you could make
- Templates: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A diagram editor.
- Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
What this rests on. OmniGraffle’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
