Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.0

GPA, above 0 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade

OpenRead is a web platform for finding and reading academic papers with AI. Its search covers both papers and the web, and its reading tools include a side-by-side comparison of several papers, a question-and-answer view, a graph of related papers and note taking. A chat assistant called Oat offers a choice of AI models, and a trending page shows the papers other readers are opening.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about OpenRead, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Its own pricing and FAQ pages wouldn't load for us either.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for comparing papers side by side

It's web only, with no reference library, no citation export and nothing it connects to.

  2. 2

    There is a free plan

The homepage shows a Free label on its AI tools and a separate Pro option; what the free plan includes could not be confirmed.

  3. 3

    It runs on Web

    Web.

  4. 4

    Paper and web search

AI search runs over papers or the open web. The homepage says new papers arrive every 5 minutes from more than 20,000 journals.

  5. 5

    Paper Compare

Sets several papers side by side to compare their findings and spot contradictions, with options such as an expert review or a comparison of frameworks.

  6. 6

    Reading tools

The reading view brings together Paper Espresso, Paper Q&A, a Related Paper Graph and note taking, so a paper can be read and annotated in one place.

  7. 7

    A 2.0 GPA, above 0 of 27

That is against the other AI research tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  8. 8

    Keep it

To replace OpenRead you would be making a library of papers and sources to search. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for comparing papers side by side

OpenRead puts paper search, a reading view and notes in one web app, with Paper Compare setting several papers side by side to spot where they disagree. We can't tell you what it costs or where free stops, because the pricing and FAQ pages sat behind a security check when we went to read them. It's web only, with no reference library, no citation export and nothing it connects to.

ToolGPA report cardOpenReadGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCNo price is on record at all. The homepage shows a Pro option, but the pricing page sat behind a browser security check both times we looked. With nothing to set against the $10 to $20 a month this category charges, it lands in the middle by default.
Free plan and trialCThe homepage puts a Free label on its AI tools, so there is something to use without paying. Where it stops couldn't be confirmed, because the pricing and FAQ pages wouldn't open for our reader. You'll have to sign up to find out.
FeaturesCSearch across papers or the open web, a reading view with Paper Q&A, a related paper graph and notes, and Paper Compare for setting several papers side by side. The basics of finding and reading, then, with the gaps the listing shows: no reference library, no citation export and nothing it connects to.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and the listing shows a platform in several separate pieces to learn: search, Paper Compare, Paper Espresso, Paper Q&A and the Oat chat assistant with its own model picker. Its own pricing and FAQ pages wouldn't load for us either.
Platforms and integrationsCA web app and nothing else. The homepage links to no mobile apps and no browser extension, and the listing shows no integrations with reference managers or anything else.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who OpenRead is for

  • Fits if you want to set several papers side by side and see where they disagree
  • Works for people who want search, reading, questions and notes in one browser tab

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you need the price up front, as the pricing page couldn't be read
  • Watch out: where the free plan stops isn't on record, since the FAQ wouldn't open either
  • Not for you if you want a phone app or a browser extension, since only the web app is listed
  • Skip it if you lean on Zotero or another reference manager, as no integrations or citation export are on record

Good to know

Good for

  • Readers who want paper search, questions and notes in one place
  • Comparing the findings of several papers side by side
  • Keeping up with newly published and trending papers

Worth knowing

  • Plan prices and free-plan limits are not recorded: the pricing and FAQ pages were behind a browser security check when this entry was researched.
  • The homepage links only to the web app; it lists no mobile apps or browser extension.

Part 02 · Pricing

What it costs

Every plan, the free plan, ways to pay less and how prices have moved

OpenRead's current pricing could not be confirmed from its own site.

The homepage shows a Pro option, but the pricing page sat behind a browser security check both times we looked.
From our grade for value for money

We could not confirm OpenRead’s current prices from its own site, so this guide lists no plans. openread.academy has them.

Part 03 · Features

What it does

Its main features, where it runs, what it works with and who makes it

1

Place it runs: Web

AI platform for searching, reading and comparing papers. Here is what it does, as its own site describes it, and what it covers: chat assistant, AI search, notes, research.

Part 04 · Standing

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

0/27

Other AI research tools it is graded above

OpenRead's GPA of 2.0 is higher than 0 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade, and level with 1.

Each grade against the category

Every bar is all 28 AI research tools we grade, cut by the letter each got. OpenRead’s own letter is outlined.

  • CPlatforms and integrationsAbove 0 of 27

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace OpenRead you would be making a library of papers and sources to search. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 26 of the 27 other AI research tools grade higher.

What you could make

  • Notes: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • A library of papers and sources to search.
  • A search engine with an AI model behind it.
  • An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.

What this rests on. OpenRead’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
