Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 21 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade

Otio is an AI research workspace for collecting sources and asking questions across all of them. It takes PDFs, web pages, YouTube videos, podcasts, audio and spreadsheets, and answers with citations to the exact page or timestamp. Every plan, including the free one, can use models from several providers and run Deep Research across your sources and the web; paid plans differ mainly in volume. It has web, desktop and iPhone apps and a Chrome extension.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Otio, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, so B is the ceiling.

The report card

Best for asking across PDFs, videos and podcasts

Otio is a workspace for piling up PDFs, web pages, YouTube videos, podcasts and spreadsheets and asking one question across them, with answers cited to the page or timestamp. Every AI model is on every plan, so what you pay for is volume, and free is tight at 50 MB in total and 1 space. It has no paper database of its own, there's no Android app, and Pro costs $90 month to month.

ToolGPA report cardOtioGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBLite is $7 a month, the same billed monthly or yearly, where this category starts around $10 and most plans sit between $12 and $20. Nothing is held back by plan either: every AI model and Deep Research are on all of them, Free included. What you buy is volume.
Free plan and trialCEvery model and Deep Research are on the free plan, but the room is small: 25 MB per file, 50 MB in total, 1 space and 2 parallel chats, which the FAQ puts at roughly 1 to 2 deep searches or 10 premium-model chats a day. A real project hits that on the first afternoon.
FeaturesBPDFs, web pages, YouTube videos, podcasts, audio and spreadsheets all go in, and answers come back cited to the exact page or timestamp. Add two models side by side, notes that export as Markdown and results sent out by email or Telegram. It works from what you bring, mind: there's no paper database of its own.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, so B is the ceiling. There's nothing to set up, though: install the app, drop your sources into a space and ask. The plans differ in volume rather than in which features you get.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and a Chrome extension, with Zotero, Mendeley, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and Box hooked up and results sent out by email or Telegram. Computer and phone, then, but not both phones: no Android app is listed.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

  • Pricey if you need Go or Pro month to month, at $36 and $90 against $18 and $45 on annual billing
  • Too light for finding papers, as it works from what you bring and has no paper database of its own
  • Watch out: Team at $25 a seat is arranged through sales, and Lite gets no discount for paying yearly

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Otio you would be making a library of papers and sources to search. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 21 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade. It costs $84 a year.

What you could make

  • Notes: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • A library of papers and sources to search.
  • An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
  • A search engine with an AI model behind it.
  • An AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it.
  • Citation records for millions of papers.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Zotero, Mendeley and Google Drive among them.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Otio’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
