Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 9 of the 15 other PDF editors we grade
PDFelement is a desktop PDF editor from Wondershare for Windows and Mac, with iOS and Android apps and PDFelement Cloud for storage and signing in a browser. It edits, converts, compresses and organizes PDFs, runs OCR, builds forms, redacts, sends documents for e-signature and has AI tools for summarizing, translating and chatting with files. It is sold by the quarter, year or two years, or as a perpetual license for version 13.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about PDFelement, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The store page is pushy, though, with crossed-out prices and a countdown, and the trial watermarks your files.
- 1
Best for a full PDF editor you can buy outright
PDFelement is a desktop app for Windows and Mac, with phone apps and a web version through PDFelement Cloud.
- 2
Paid plans start at $4 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $11.99 per quarter for one platform.
- 3
You can try it first
Free trial: most tools for 14 days with a few uses each; saved files carry a watermark
- 4
It runs on 5 platforms
Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Web.
- 5
Edit, convert and organize
Edit text and images, convert to and from Office formats, compress, combine, split, crop and reorder pages, and process files in batches.
- 6
OCR and data extraction
Turns scans into searchable, editable text, recognizes tables and pulls form data and receipt details out of PDFs.
- 7
Forms, signing and redaction
Create and fill forms, including XFA, sign with digital certificates, request e-signatures, redact and set passwords.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 9 of 15
That is against the other PDF editors we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9

The report card
Best for a full PDF editor you can buy outright
PDFelement is a desktop app for Windows and Mac, with phone apps and a web version through PDFelement Cloud. It does the whole job, OCR, forms, redaction and e-signatures included, and a perpetual license is $129.99. The store page is pushy, though, with crossed-out prices and a countdown, and the trial watermarks your files.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | The Yearly Plan is $79.99 for Windows or Mac, $89.99 for both, middle of the pack. But the $129.99 perpetual license, spread over three years, is properly cheap. Just know it covers version 13 only, and phone and web access is for a limited time. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. The 14-day trial lets you try most tools, but only a few times each, and anything you save gets a watermark. It's more of a demo than a trial. |
| Features | B | Edits text and images, converts, OCRs and reads tables, builds forms including XFA, redacts, signs with certificates, sends for e-signature and adds Bates numbers. It covers the whole job. Heavier AI use is a separate plan. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.62 from 7,575 App Store ratings. It's a desktop editor you install and start using, with nothing to configure first. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and the web, with 20GB of PDFelement Cloud to sync between them. That's wide, but the only integration on record is its own cloud. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who PDFelement is for
- Great if you want to pay once for a full editor and skip the subscription
- Handy when you need OCR, forms and redaction without Acrobat Pro prices
- Good for people who switch between a computer, a phone and a browser
Who it is not for
- Skip it if crossed-out prices and countdown timers put you off
- Not for you if you want a proper trial, as saved files get a watermark
- Tight if you lean on the AI, as paid plans include just 50 uses before a separate plan
Good to know
Good for
- Windows or Mac users who want to pay once for a PDF editor
- People who need OCR, forms and redaction for less than Acrobat Pro
- Users who also want PDF tools on their phone and in a browser
Worth knowing
- Prices are shown against much higher crossed-out figures with a countdown; the one-platform price covers Windows or Mac, and both cost more.
- The perpetual license covers PDFelement 13 only, and its mobile and web access lasts for a limited time.
- Heavier AI use is a separate AI plan: $3.99 a month for 1,000 uses or $39.99 a year for 12,000.
- The free trial adds a watermark when saving and allows only a few uses of tools such as eSign and AI.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of PDFelement you could make: forms. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $47.96 a year.
What you could make
- Forms: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Editing the text inside a PDF without breaking its layout.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. PDFelement’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
